    Ok, I am a Certified Food Safety Professional with the National Environmental Health Association. I teach certification courses for chefs and employees of food production facilities in sanitation and hygiene, food safety, food allergies, cross-contamination, bacterial growth, and other related courses. I also perform the required annual safety inspections of restaurants, food production facilities, water treatment plants, and other facilities for the Department of Health.
    Water does not expire. There is absolutely nothing in pure water that can go bad. Water contains only two things, oxygen, and hydrogen. The only thing that can happen to water is for it to become contaminated with something else. As long as you are filling the containers with pre-treated water from a city water supply, there is no need to add additional chemicals to the water to store it long-term. Actually, by adding additional chemicals to the water, that shortens the time that you can store the water because those chemicals break down over time and have to be replaced every 3 to 5 years depending on which chemical composition they are using for the particular brand that you have selected to use.
    As long as the container was sanitized with a small amount of diluted bleach or a similar sanitizer and then rinsed out with potable water (not just cleaned with soap and water) before they are filled with potable water from a city supplied water source, ( and you do NOT touch the inside of the lid that will transfer bacteria from your hands to the inside of the water container) and they are stored in a dark, cool, dry location water can be stored indefinitely.
    My 300 gallons of water has been stored sealed up for 17 years now without rotation since I moved into my current house. I keep one 55 gallon barrel as a test source that was filled at the same time as my other barrels that I collect 2 small samples from each year. I perform bacterial tests and water purity tests on one sample and send the other sample off to an independent lab to have them do the same. In the past 17 years, not one of the tests has shown any level of bacterial presence or degradation of the water supply.
    Another source of contamination for the water supply is by using pumps that you insert down into the water barrel to pump the water out with. Any contaminants or bacteria that may be on the pump tube has just been introduced into the water supply and has potentially contaminated it. A better method is by using a rack that can store the barrel on its side and allow gravity to access the water inside. This is the method that I use to access my emergency water supply. I never have to worry about inserting anything into my water barrels that could potentially contaminate my water supply.
    Just food for thought.

      I understand what you are saying about city water being pretreated, but most of the country including myself get theyre water from a well! I'd also say that there is no guarantee that your city water can't contain bacteria! City water supply's get contaminated all the time.
      Of course you are right that clean water by itself would not go bad, the treatment drops are an extra precaution, especially for us with well water. And circulating you water supply every 5-7 years can't be a bad thing!

      @@PilotPatriot yes, if the water is coming from a well and is not pre-treated, then you would either use some form of chemical treatment in the water or do what I did at my last house before we had city water. I filled the 55 gallon barrels with water that I processed through the Berkey water filter, then sealed it up. I went a step farther with mine just to make sure before I filtered the water with the Berkey, I had also boiled the water to kill any microorganisms in the water. It is a long slow process to fill 55-gallon barrels that way, but at least then I knew that I had a reliable water source without any added chemicals in it.

      Wow, great info. Didn't know water was able to be stored for so long 17years holy smokes!. You know you thing, thank you for Sharing. Living in South Florida is always good to have water stored in case of any hurricane. One question for you, can those container be stored in a garage for example? Or the summer heat can affect the water inside the container?. Thanks in advance.

    • @WH6FQE
      @WH6FQE 5 років тому +9

      @@kaimanson3174 yeah, as long as it is protected from contamination there is nothing in water that can go bad. It only contains hydrogen and oxygen, two elements that never expire. It does get "stale" so before you use it you should aerate it by simply pouring it from one pitcher into another a few times, then it will be good as new. Just store it in a cool, dark location just like you do food and it will be good for many years.

    Hopefully everyone knows not to use a garden hose to fill a 55 gallon water barrel or any other container for drinking water. You want to use a food grade hose & use water from inside your home. Wal-Mart sells the food grade hoses & these are what people that have RV's use too. We filled (3) 55 gallon water barrels we keep in our unfinished basement. Hope this info will be helpful to someone. Happy prepping everyone!

    If you store/stack bottled water, use an old shower curtain underneath your stack, folded to fit the space. Checking this plastic on occasion can alert you to leaking water bottles before your floor gets wet. Utilizing old pallets can be great too.

    Some would think I go a bit over board with my preps. I have two 750 gallon water tanks for my emergency stores. But I wont be wasting any flushing toilets. During SHTF people will be pooping in a bag lined bucket. (and haul it very far away)
    Growing up camping with my family we had a 10 gallon jug that had to be used for drinking, cooking and washing. We learned to use it sparingly. Sometimes we had to go 4 or 5 miles to fill it up.
    I know a lot of preppers talk up the Berkey water filters and they are good. I like that they come in different sizes. But the Alexapure is a far better filter. Each filter will do 5000 gallons while Berkey only does 2000 gallons. To filter out Floride with Berkey you have to buy an additional separate filter. Not with Alexapure. If you already have a Berkey I suggest you buy the Alexapure filters and put them in your Berkey.

    I read the polypropylene breaks down and can't handle chlorine or Bleach?
    Can I still use these containers with this aquamira treatment? Will it poison us? Or make the containers leach chemicals?
    Also let's say it can be used how do I start?
    Wash each container soap and water rinse. Do I splash each container with Bleach? Then add the tap water then add the drops of treatment? Do i have to boil tge water first or can it go straight from the tap? Or should i just buy distilled water instead? Then treat it with drops? The goal is for long term storage for hopefully 2-3 + years if possible. Ill be doing multiple containers want to do it right. Thanks

      You probly could if you had to...But, as long as the grid is up and you have access to clean water id recommend replacing it with new water. ALSO, treated water will likely last much longer than 5 years if stored properly! Main reason to rotating it is just to make sure you always have the freshest water possible.

Not sure which coleman's you're referring to, the collapsible bags or ones similar to my igloos, but either way, I concur with your assessment. I have a few 7g aquatainers & 2 g.i. cans. The igloos are un-stackalbe, & have to be manhandled to get the water out. (Same with the g.i. cans.) My plan is to use them only to refill the aquatiners which have a spigot.

    • @Inkdraft
      @Inkdraft 5 років тому +4

      If everyone around you is having the same emergency and it lasts for a long time and you have to go out you should probably wear shabby, soiled clothes or everyone will know that you have water to wash clothes with and that you probably have other supplies as well. You'll be followed home. It won't end well for you. Or, IF you are really prepared, it won't end well for your stalker. Either way, it will be a pain in the ass.

    • @PilotPatriot
      @PilotPatriot  5 років тому +1

      Why not use dish soap?? Its just to make sure the container is clean and the same thing you use to clean things you eat and drink out of. Just make sure you rinse it well!!

    • @ffryan
      @ffryan 4 роки тому

      I use diluted bleach first to clean, then use the dish soap. The reason you do this is because if there is any kind of residue on the inside, it increases the possibility of your water being contaminated and spoiling.

    • @wownewstome6123
      @wownewstome6123 3 роки тому

      @@ffryan Per the CDC, you've got it backwards. You can't sanitize something until it's clean. I recommend the CDC article, Creating and Storing an Emergency Water Supply
      It has a lot of tips, plus which types of bleach to avoid and how much to dilute the bleach with water.
