When I first got into DMB years ago I used to assume he was always high or drunk. But I have come to realize and accept the fact (after seeing numerous shows and countless interviews) that Dave is just being Dave and it's the way he is!
Dave is a brilliant and passionate artist. Can't believe everyone that thinks he is stoned (he's not, but who cares??). Watch him and his intensity. He's just really into his art, and he delivers. If I can only go to one more concert for the rest of my life, I choose Dave!!
I love Dave at the end. He really gets into the feel of the song and thats what makes him such a great musician. Also it helps that he is playing with one of the best guitarists of all time!! Dave and TIm you rock my world!!
I totally agree. This is one of the few songs where he really shows what a clean guitarist he is. I love the effects and ambience he adds to a lot of the songs, but in this one he really shows what he can play. I love the AOL sessions version of this song, and have since I first saw it - but this blows it away.
3 people had a comma caused by awesomeness, and while they were falling to the ground they accidently pressed the dislike button.............. poor souls
I don't know that Dave is a religious person, but I can say with confidence that he has a reverence for Jesus Christ and his story. Thank you, Dave, for this incredible song. One of my favs.
I think you are right there. There are still a number of songs that he references smoking pot. "Some people drink, some people don't, some people like to smoke a bowl and some don't."
...you don't need to prove a thing to me...just give me faith, make me believe. Come on, save me, save me, Mr. Walking Man, if you can...stranger, if you please- or am i too far gone to get back home? ... i'm not asking you to fly- i'm just asking you to save me...YOU MIGHT TRY SAVING YOURSELF
@ everyone who comments on him being high and on drugs: if you were more of a fan or just did your research you would know that he gets very nervous when on stage and has said himself that he talks a lot when he gets that way. Did he do drugs, sure he did, he has said that also. and as for the end of the song, you're not supposed to be able to understand it, its jazz scat, or in this case, Dave Scat. just appreciate the passion he pours out on stage at every show.
Until you get up on a stage in front of 40,000+ dont comment on someone's performance or mannerisms while on stage. If the people in the crowd were happy i very much doubt he cares about anyone watching this online and hes right. Dave's the best live performer i've seen...ever!!
I don't think Dave is high or drunk at all. I think it's just the way he is. His mind works in amazing ways, and I don't think most people can comprehend it, so we just classify him as weird or say "Oh, he's high." But it's just the way he is.
It's kind of obvious if you look at how he speaks before the song that he was high during the performance. still, that doesn't take anything away from how amazing it was. and I agree with you. some people need drugs to get to that point where they're that good. Jimi was an amazing guitarist sober or not, but I'll bet you that some of his most famous riffs were written while he was high. same goes for any musician who uses; it becomes a part of their process. I doubt it's like that for DM though
right on, billabong. but i must say that i have said "i'm trippin" when i was actually trippin. this song is a trip. it's not a parody. i think he's takin the piss
@thesteve120 By the way this guy is someone called Jesus Christ! 40 days walking in the desert, turn water into wine and there is no one better than Jesus to save somebody!
If Dave is Stoned? I believe he is. Look back to Dave & Tim Live at Luther College; at the end of the track before "#41," Dave says, "This song, as it, as it's the forty-first song that we wrote, it's called, "#41." Cannabis creativus, the Dave Matthews Band. I would say he may be under the influence of cannabis, and maybe high on life from playing in front of a crowd, but nothing more than that.
Agreed on all points. I dunno if he's high while he writes, but I'm sure some of his inspiration has come from moments of "inebriation" if you wanna call it that. I don't find that to be a negative. He's an artists and every artist needs a medium. And clearly, the use of drugs has not hindered his talents or caused him to be in tabloids or another "lohan" for that matter. So fuck it. Bottom line; the man is good at what he does whether he be high or straight while he's doin it.
Dave isn't on anything in this video, its just how he is. He's just a weird, wacky person who makes incredibly great music. Yes, he used so smoke the reefer before some of his concerts a while back, but in an interview on Fuse he said he hasn't done that in years. Dave is just a really, really weird person. haha
plus he plays 23 more songs at this concert, id like to see someone tripping control themselves for that long on a stage infront of people.. yeah, good luck with that
@jeffbelfi Hahahahaha awesome! I don't think he's drunk or stoned because in every live show I've seen he always has that awkward kind of personality to him. Just seems to be the way he is. Still puts on a hell of a show.
Always felt Dave's mannerisms is his nervous side showing through? He's more than amazing with his ability to tell a story that ends nowhere lol He's not someone who grew up performing in front of huge groups of fans so when he broke through and never turned back it's all still the WTF just happened feeling to him? I don't know but I'll take a bad Dave show over any other artist as I've seen a lot of shows and his work is unexplainable.
@fulmersgone he's acting like he's tripping lol... i know i couldn't do it... but hell he's a genius, so maybe can....maybe something else... but either way...Awesome...comparing to hundreds of videos i've seen of him, his character changes quite a lot.
@moxley101 wow, take it easy man. There was no sarcasm or whatsoever intended in my comment. Next to that, I don't see any link between me knowing the difference between tripping and being stoned and my intelligence.
Seriously doubt DM's an "ex junkie." I'll admit his manorisms are a bit out there but more than likely he's smoked a couple jays before the show. As if thats unheard of. The whole argument about not being able to play that stuff geeked up isn't valid. Jimi Hendrix played and played out of his fucking mind and made it look unreal. But I'm sure DM can afford some really good weed and probably enjoys playing high. Thats it. Songs great and I love the scat at the end. Awesome!
this song is obviously a cry for help. it seems to be that dave is pleading with some sort of a higher being to give him a reason to believe...he just wants a sign.
He doesn't even know how many times his music has gotten me through some tough times in my life. God has blessed him with such an amazing gift.
He worked for his talent bro
He has a nack for making me feel ok
You couldn't have said it better!! 🙏❤️🎶 🌎
UR a weak soy boy
Not a song about god.
A man lost on the path...
Refernces to faith. How it eludes.
How people can be delusional
That. "Faith" saves all
this song is such a great song. really dave
The greatest miracle that Jesus ever performed was changing the heart of a wicked man to a loving heart.
When I first got into DMB years ago I used to assume he was always high or drunk. But I have come to realize and accept the fact (after seeing numerous shows and countless interviews) that Dave is just being Dave and it's the way he is!
This concert may be the best performance of these songs I've heard. I LOVE it. Got to buy it .
this song is so underrated....simply awesome
So much gratitude for this music❤
The fact that 2 men can play better than most bands is pure amazing.... If you agree thumbs up
Dave is a brilliant and passionate artist. Can't believe everyone that thinks he is stoned (he's not, but who cares??). Watch him and his intensity. He's just really into his art, and he delivers. If I can only go to one more concert for the rest of my life, I choose Dave!!

not only is this song a beast, i love to watch dave dance in his seat in this one. good, good stuff ;)
I don't know that Dave is a religious person, but I can say with confidence that he has a reverence for Jesus Christ and his story.
Thank you, Dave, for this incredible song. One of my favs.
♥ Good Lord. They are just amazing. I wish I could have been there.
Dave matthews is magic
WOW I really love Dave Mathews!! I never had a fav instrument until now. Dave's voice and those fingers! Love it
GREAT! Dave is the best!
I love Dave and Tim!
Jesus... what a good tune.
the best presentation of this song...
so eccentric, tell tale sign of a pure genius
Its exactly what I need!
I think you are right there. There are still a number of songs that he references smoking pot. "Some people drink, some people don't, some people like to smoke a bowl and some don't."
the best quality as well ;-)
Your vids are the BEST!!!
nothing makes me feel more humble than listening to Dave. Why he acts so proud during his post singing intro's is beyond me.
If you were as good as him you'd be unable to avoid acting proud too...
Gifted guitarists!
Yes it definitely does.
This song is definitely tongue in cheek.
...you don't need to prove a thing to me...just give me faith, make me believe. Come on, save me, save me, Mr. Walking Man, if you can...stranger, if you please- or am i too far gone to get back home? ... i'm not asking you to fly- i'm just asking you to save me...YOU MIGHT TRY SAVING YOURSELF
I completely agree
@ everyone who comments on him being high and on drugs: if you were more of a fan or just did your research you would know that he gets very nervous when on stage and has said himself that he talks a lot when he gets that way. LOVE!
Blessed guy !
If I stood in front of thousands of people singing I would smoke a j too...but it still is awesome...
Until you get up on a stage in front of 40,000+ dont comment on someone's performance or mannerisms while on stage. If the people in the crowd were happy i very much doubt he cares about anyone watching this online and hes right. Dave's the best live performer i've seen...ever!!
I love that. U decide
Yes!
i saw dave and tim do this at the gorge... i swear we made eye contact.
i know he won the ganga award one year. spaced out for sure.. and a genius too boot.
I don't think Dave is high or drunk at all. I think it's just the way he is. His mind works in amazing ways, and I don't think most people can comprehend it, so we just classify him as weird or say "Oh, he's high." But it's just the way he is.
❤
fuckincredible!
I am so happy that I learned to play this song on guitar, took me forever, but it was worth it😊🤠😎👍🤘❤
Really??? Damn. Time to go learn captain next.
He is totally high. Watch him in the beginning of the video.
He was high this whole show. Did you see his speech before cornbread lmao
❤️
Stoned or not, he's a pure genius.
more like tripping or not
Hire me, Dave!!!:)
🙏💯
Totally dude!

this is freaking amazing! the AOL one he does alone is great as well, but lacks the jam aspect
ya, i'll have it up, just been a very busy past couple of weeks.
hes so high
i like when dave looks over to tim thats the cue he about to end
save yourselves
@BigRed5141 Bravo!!
@breeetastic Ty :P
@jeffbelfi It doesn't sound like you are indifferent, but thanks for uploading. Love this version.
I would have to say this is for sure a plea for help, but not from the heavens...
right on, billabong.
but i must say that i have said "i'm trippin" when i was actually trippin.
this song is a trip. it's not a parody. i think he's takin the piss
just wow... that ending was fucking amazing!!!
If i hear this song july 28th tampa ford amphitheater I'LL SHIT A FUCKIN' BRICK!!!
I just love how he cant sit still lol. Its even more noticeable with Tim standing there. INCREDIBLE musician though
You know you live in a fucked up society, when a song like this only has 200,000 veiws and a artist like Lady Gaga gets 200,000,000!
personally i think dave acts like that to spice his style up a bit, i think hes effin funny and hes a good actor too , so idk maybe
Political Affiliation has nothing to do with the greatness of this music. Leave politics out of it!
@davidhudman lol, yes, I get it. I really could care less about political associations, but I did bring it on myself.
@thesteve120 By the way this guy is someone called Jesus Christ! 40 days walking in the desert, turn water into wine and there is no one better than Jesus to save somebody!

He evokes sinful imaginings .... ;-)
You might try saving yourself! - Ah sen am en a do ba duga doya do doya do!

Here's to the two of them making acoustics wail.

Dave and Tim, need a roommate?
Was that his Lewis Black impression at the beginning?
"you decide"
Dave does not smoke weed before shows. Fact. I asked him this over ten years ago.
he is so ready to hop out of that chair and dance 3:30
He reminds me of Lewis Black at the beginning.
I would love to know everything he is saying in falsetto, there at the end.
@PlayinTime41 That's cute, I like slang.
Always felt Dave's mannerisms is his nervous side showing through? Yeah, he is just having gun up there he isn't high
@davemoore41 hes not hyperactive, hes just really high
@davidmerriss Hard to be completely indifferent, it depends on the angle.
@moxley101 wow, take it easy man. There was no sarcasm or whatsoever intended in my comment. Next to that, I don't see any link between me knowing the difference between tripping and being stoned and my intelligence.
hes not stoned hes a musical savant
He looks like a muppet sometimes. Part of the awesomeness, probably.
@moxley101 I'll try and convince my mother I'm a just a fucking great artist next time I come home stoned, thanks for the tip!
hi
it's said at the beginning it's a parody. does anyone know what song is parodised?
Thanks!
my wife loves this concert. do not know the date. would love to know.
You can buy the cd
U can buy the CD Live at Radio City
March 1997 New York City
Radio city music hall
@thesteve120 If you think so...maybe you should call Peter Pan!
Seriously doubt DM's an "ex junkie." I'll admit his manorisms are a bit out there but more than likely he's smoked a couple jays before the show. As if thats unheard of. what means to live
Does anyone have tabs on this?
Brandon Maroney you gotta discover davetabs.com bro :)
Mehmet AKA I've looked on there before! I couldn't find the Tim parts
this song is obviously a cry for help. it seems to be that dave is pleading with some sort of a higher being to give him a reason to believe...he just wants a sign.
