Big thanks again to Jason for joining us on this episode, be sure to check out his work using the links in the description, and also let us know what other games or moments you would like to see his take on! Also, sorry again Jason for all the bagpipe gameplay you had to listen to...
@@Iscannon The army deploys its two secret weapons. The bagpiper who plays masterfully, and a violinist who plays _very_ badly, and _very_ enthusiastically.
This was a fun thing to do. Always interesting combining two areas, history and games, into one video like this. Thanks to the team at GameSpot for giving me the opportunity.
A very well edited video, I liked the combination of narration and game ,snippets. and excerpts from your own films. And what you said about the trade-off between realism and what will look good in the game. Everyone is more or less aware that this must be the case, but we rarely have the opportunity to find out what, in detail, such a compromise consists of.
Same here! Have watched the medieval stuff he makes (really interesting stuff) but had no idea he made games as well. This was a real good episode, had so much insight in the history as well as the game mechanics 👏
I am in the same boat right now. This feels almost like an "out of left field" situation. Never would've guessed. Also another comment says he owns Judge Dredd???
Ok, please tell me that I wasn't the only one who watches this guy's channel but had absolutely no idea he was a CEO of a gaming studio. And great video, as always. I really enjoyed Jason's commentary (as always...).
I love how Jason is living his adult life EXACTLY how a 10 year-old castle/medieval enthusiast would imagine how their life might be "when they grow up." Must be nice to be so successful in life you can **actually** live out your childhood dreams lol.🐎
I knew that he is also the Rebellion CEO, but I‘ve usually only heard him talk strictly history. Seeing him talk as a game dev, makes him even more interesting. I really can’t stand the “historians” criticising games for being unrealistic, whilst not understanding entertainment and game development. He understands both, very nuanced
that's something I've always found a litle grating too. yes, historical accuracy and realism can bring a game to life, but it's not like devs who spend years on projects don't *know* most of the facts (especially since most games stick to the more well-known time periods), they've made a creative decision to be more cinematic or bend things to accomodate a type of design etc. I also like that he uses this chance to educate and share a passion for his own experimentation and the knowledge he's learnt
You gotta be freakin’ kidding me. I’ve been watching this dude’s channel Modern History TV casually on and off for years and had NO IDEA he’s the head of Rebellion 🤯 That’s really awesome and I’ll never be able to watch one of your medieval videos the same way again😅
Wow, I seen a few of this guy’s historian videos and I never would have thought he had a drop of interest in videos games, but he is the CEO of Rebellion. That’s awesome. More of this please.
3:14 "Most combat, if you can, you try and get the enemy between 10 o'clock and 3 'o'clock. That's going to be your strongest attack" And that is why British Tea Time usually begins around 3:30.
Well that was wholesome af. Seriously recommended watching his channel, such a great guy that adds so much knowledge and quality into this world. When it seems especially dark, watching a man talk about medieval pub signs in a genuine and wholesome manner, really picks up your mood.
WW2 Rebuilder is easily the most unique game shown. It's a wonderful game with doing parts of the rebuilding and why they are helping. I really enjoy that combat free experience and learning about the characters and history.
20:43 i think that the lord of the rings movie showed us this perfectly when that one old guy at helms deep couldnt hold his knocked arrow for long and accidentally shot too early.
great video! i love that he's also a game developer (and gamer) so he adds in that bit of practicality/understanding for the developer's perspective. in some of these style of videos the expert can be a little harsh on the devs!
I would very much like to see Jason return to comment on more historical/high fantasy games. He displays a lot of practical understanding of the matters, and has a good approach to this type of commentary. Frankly, I prefer him over Toby Capwell, who mostly seems to talk down to the games being displayed.
Excellent point about killing the peasantry leading to nobody being able to work the land, and interestingly the game takes place after the Plague, which meant there were far less peasants so they became more valuable.
The one sticking point for history buffs when it came to Kingdom Come: Deliverance was the (over)use of bows as early 1400s Bohemia was more of a crossbow country.
@@blooperman1997 everything to do with the cumans, a fair bit of the armor, the fashion of the main lord characters such as Hanush or Radzig and Divish, the architecture isn't entirely correct to early 15th century bohemia. Etc etc.
IIRC crossbows were considered during development but they either couldn't get it working well or chose not to include them for gameplay reasons. A crossbow isn't as versitile as a bow,
Plus the overreliance on swords as opposed to the true harvester of men up until the mid-gunpowder era - the spear. First mod I used in KCD was one that let me pick up and use pole-arms.
I didn't think you could top Jonathan, but Jason is just the best. It's a pleasure to hear him talk about almost anything, love his channel. I would watch any video you all put out with him.
I've been watching Jason make historical videos on youtube for years, I had no idea he is the CEO of a game development company. It was really interesting to watch his take on historical games.
At the timestamp 21:12... MYFF. Move Your Feet. Very good advice, in melee combat! Excellent commentary. Makes me realize just how much realism has been baked into KCD's game design.
I love watching sir Jason. Man is excited to review games, fair, and positive. But also knows his history and even game development. An absolute pleasure to watch.
Since Rebellion was mentioned, I might aswell as for a reaction to the guns from "Strange Brigade". There are a few I'd never even heard of before seeing them in there.
Wow! I didn't know what to expect from an interview about historical video games, but this was facinating! Jason Kingsley (@RebellionJaskon) filled his analysis with loads of real historical facts. Great analysis of how history & historical weapons are manipulated to create effective game play. No way to take it all in with one watching. 😊
Holding a bowstring is like holding on to the leash of a dog that’s caught the scent of a squirrel, trying to hold that dog in place for more than a couple minute would be incredibly tiring.
23:25 I would have liked to hear examples of the societies he had in mind when saying that. Also, those imperial knights mount griffins, that's why they move like cats.

Also, sorry again Jason for all the bagpipe gameplay you had to listen to...
I think bagpipes were an official weapon of war in the past.Beautiful when heard from a distance, but up close, maybe no so much.
At least no one was playing the violin at the same time. Those two instruments do *not* go well together.
Would love to see an episode 2!
Jason is a nice guy and a gentleman. And I love the fact that he has used his money to pursue his interest instead of status symbols.

Kinda understandable now, how your uploads are so erratic, CEO, Historian and UA-camr among other things. Renaissance man indeed😂
You are a busy Knight. 😄
Known about you for ages, never knew you were CEO of Rebellion. Mad!
Very entertaining and informative video!
Cheers from chilly old Cambridge!
The fact that Jason has his own (quitesuccessful i might add) game studio, AND they're friends with Jonathan Ferguson makes me really happy.
Rebellion also publishes 2000AD, the comics company behind Judge Dredd
I only know him through his youtube channel and you’re telling me he has a successful game studio all this time? Bonkers (in a good way)
He owns the rights to Judge Dredd too
I knew he must be successful in some way to own such a beautiful property and horses. No idea he was in the video game industry that’s awesome
Why isn't he making a dredd 2012 sequel RN, people have renewed interest in Karl Urban @@celticperspective5183

At the risk of a YT love-in, I love your channel as well Jason :) It was great to have a trustee so invested in the subject and objects.

i had no idea either

Only learned of it when I bought his book a few months ago.
I'm a British game developer and didn't know 😂

Jason Kingsley himself? Great catch for this series.
Warhammer Total War is one of his favorite games?! This dude is awesome. I’d watch an entire series of him talking about Warhammer Total war.
I can't believe I learned so much about cavalry tactics from a commentary on a warhammer game.
