Hi Kevy. Great vid, thanks for posting. I stopped using the Wilkinson soap a couple of years back. I used to love its smell and slickness. It was extremely affordable and really stood out as a great little soap. Then suddenly, it changed and became dry and smelled of chemicals. It started to leave my face extremely dry and itchy. I don't know what Wilkinson sword have done but I can only imagine that they are cutting corners. Such a shame.
Hi Kevy, I think it's due to Osmosis! The movement of water particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. If kept somewhere dry, there will be more water in the soap, than the surroundings, so water moves. The lid, I assume, isn't completely air tight. Soap also has hydrophillic and hydrophobic aspects so the water can escape by osmosis, yet will not re-enter as well due to the repulsion of the hydrophobic aspect. I'm guessing companies use a higher temperature and pressure to make the soap in the first place.
I've noticed this happening with a few soaps, pretty much the water has just dried up and 'concentrated' the soap, hence the increased scent, doesn't seem to effect them. Another one that it happens with is monsavon bol à raser.
The same thing happened to mine when I accidentally left it open for a week after I used it. It’s a cheap soap that has a lot of water in it so it’s not surprising lol. Despite it being a cheap mass produced soap it’s still really good and slick and has an amazing scent. Works well with my parker SRX shavette.
do this like you did in the video, but do so for 3/4 days, changing the water each day, and you may see a change. Did this with my wool fat and now fills the jar :)
You've got two options. 1.) Use it as is and see how it works! 2.) Grate it and leave the gratings submerged in water. Once they absorb, you should be able to smoosh them all together. -Henry
In the whiskey world, the shrinkage would be called the angels cut. If that reduction occurred over a couple years, it may take longer to rehydrate. I have some Wilkinson sword soap, but have not opened it yet. Maybe I’ll give it a shake to see!
It took ages to dehydrate, so I don't think it's surprising that it cannot be rehydrated in a few hours. Hydration isn't just water; could be oils as well. Not sure there's any mystery here.
After seeing this, I am reminded to check my tub of Wilkinson Sword. After all, you gave it to me. I'm going to ask Monica Gillam, and Irena Marchu to see what their educated advice will be. It is the most peculiar phenomenon. I do concur that a new tub is in order. I hope the face wash was refreshing. The weather in your spacious backyard was so pleasant. We are roasting here in Texas. Enjoy your weekend!
Please kevy this a very serious matter for wet shaving community..if it can happen to Wilkinson it might happen to all..u being our beloved leader pls take it up with company to improve its quality😂@@kevyshaves4109
I've seen recently in the supermarkets, a good package deal for just 15 quid, a Wilkinson sword razor, puk, brush and 5 or so blades. I did buy the Wilkinson sword razor for 12 quid. Its a very good razor and made in Solingen I noticed. As for the puk, I've had my Mitchell's wool fat for a good year still have much left. Keep it in a metal pudding bowl uncovered. Its well matured so easy to lather. Awsome puk. Long live de I say !!!
I've had creams and croaps dry out on me before. E.g., I've got a half used tub of Cella with a top skin like leather. Just add a little more water when lathering, and everything's fine. You won't know that anything happened.
Good evening Kevy! No mystery there, my good man. What you have the is petrified shaving soap! I have a few pre-1960 William's Mug shaving soaps that are in a similar state. You can try lathering it. It might just be the best soap ever.
Mine went small too since i let it dry longer than one day. Now it is like yours. I is a nice travel soap now ;-) It works the same so there is no sence to me to make water in it to make it bigger again...
Don't ever get Wilkinson Soap if you suffer with sensitive skin, my mustache area(my most sensitive area) was irritated as soon as I lathered up on my face. The ingredients are also full of chemicals
I know that at least one time a puck of Williams Soap did that to me once. Back then I just left the soap in the ceramic mug that I lathered in. No drying or anything, just open air no lid on a regular mug. It was almost like a "dry rot", I can't recall if it was in the summer time or winter. It only happened once and I have no idea why, but something within the soap was gone and made it shrink. I do have one question, what was the drink you had at the start of the video?
I was expecting a test lather to see if the soap performs better now that it has lost water content and is more concentrated. Ze only vay to know is to experiment Herr Kevy!
This happened to a puck of Erasmic soap that I gave to my brother. It was still good when I gave it to him! When a soap goes like that I'd use it for hand soap. It's not ideal for the task, but I hate waste. Maybe it'd work as a preshave bar also. Did you try to lather it?
In other news...have you made a video using the Spoiler blade from the 1960-70's, by Gillette? I used one from 1976...the year I was born, and thought it was excellent.....Found it...the Razorock Gamechanger...and, you said exactly what I thought about that blade.
Odd. I don't know about the soap reaching a state of being "cured" but I have the identical soap with a pattern of infrequent use but no shrinkage or increase in fragrance. Even though I don't use it very often this is one of my favorite soaps so I know I'd notice anything out of the ordinary. Perhaps your tub is haunted or possessed... :D
When I open the lid on this soap the smell was so overwhelming that my sinuses couldn't take it. It's also loaded with nasty chemicals. I didn't even lather it on my brush in fear of burning the bristles. Definitely would not recommend this stuff.
Whatttttt ????? 😮😮😮😮 How did it do that? 😃 Looks like a shave puck now. Lolll. Are you gonna try to do a shave with it like it is now? Be cool to see if it would lather well. 😁
I’ve done the same thing with Wilkinson’s in the past. I did buy a second one, but had to keep my eye on it. Did you perfect your German accent by watching Dad’s Army?
The scent is the best abt this soap, fullstop. Must admit, this was my daily soap during Mach3 times. Only after waking up, changing to real DE shaving, realized, what c r a p it actually is. Wilkinson is collecting money with old-name-glory, but its short lived. They know it, try to revive, see their new low-cost razors. Anyhow, we know crap, to avoid it + concentrate on the real stuff. Cheers fm Singapore+
I have bought it once en used it once. That soap dries out the skin and is very chemical. I payed a€2.00 for it 125 grams bowl. That was a expensive 1 shave hi.

You should have tried to make a lather
Maybe that's the reason Polmolive pulled the sticks off the UK market, the sticks were turning into twigs on the shelf🤣

Thnx Kevy, you tripple milled it. Removed water. Most of time when my shave soap dehydrates, the scent goes too. Looks like you should be ok ✅
Thanks for that 😀

Interesting experiment, I guess with age things start to shrivel. On the bright side the grass looks brilliant.
😂

The exact same thing happened with mine! Strange.
Hi Kevy- I bet the DR Harris badger brush and some warm water will produce a great lather. Let us know, please. Take care and best regards!
I have a old tub of it . I don't think I will use it again . Just to many chemicals in it . Bad for the skin .

Blackcurrant juice
@@kevyshaves4109 I have always wanted to try that. I need to quit dragging my feet and just do it lol

How cool is that, reduces to travel size at no extra charge. Plan and use twice 2 years before bringing on travels 😂
😂
John Flynn
Haha, Lol. I’d be pisser than all shit if that happened to any of my good soaps! I like them just the way they are, FULL SIZE!
😅🤙🏼
To be fair, it might be a blessing that this soap has shrunk given how shite it is! 😂😂
Mine did the same exact shrinkage! Jim
The soap cured, you can't put the water back into the puck. You don't really want to, use it as it is it should be just fine.
All I can think is when is he going to repaint that bench in the background
That's called vintage 😂😂
Now we need a video review of the transformed (cured??) soap.
It's in the waiting room. 😀
Use it like a wardrobe odorizer.
Hey if you check your Speick from previous videos, did that one also shrink??? Mine did. Viagra needed
I'll need to have a look at the Speick. I'll let you know. Kevy 👍
Got a Wilkinson sword in a black tub, i don't know if that's any different from the blue one (scent or lather wise.).. Or is it just a black tub? 😂
Its the same soap in a different tub. Kevy 👍
@@kevyshaves4109 cheers, mate. Was really curious!
I checked my Wilkingson soap and saw that nothing have changed....

Or maybe, Mrs. Kevy has been secretly using his stuff!? 🤨🤔⁉️
SoCal Shave Oh the plot thickens. Good thinking detective.

No. I still have it. Kevy 🙂

Good idea 👍
Grate it and use as a shaving stick bud, triple milled with concentrated scent mate lol 😂
Shrinky Dinks!
That's just so weird.
It's a Mini Me Wilkinson Sword or has Mrs Kevy discovered some black magic to reduce the soap stash a little? 😂 😉 👍
Ha ha! If only....
Mine are the same.
Most intriguing Kevy, It reminded me of one of those shrivelled up old solid air fresheners. 🤔
My brother had a tub of this and the same thing happened
Maybe if you put your razor in the tub and leave it for half a year, then your razor will also shrink 🤣
😂
If It Doesn’t Rehydrate I Guess it Could Be Ground Up Into Powder And Used Kevy 😳
Shrinkage 🤣
It died of dehydration😂
It's weird, I've never had that happen to any other soap, just this one. Kevy 😀
Kevy Shaves I guess if it’s not triple milled like “what the puck” it won’t last.
Too much water content perhaps.
