  • This is a video clip from a live concert of Miles Davis septet in Paris in 1989.
    Miles Davis - Trumpet
    Benjamin Rietveld - Bass
Joseph "Foley" McCreary - Lead Bass
    Ricky Wellman - Drums
    John Bigham - Electric Percussion
Kenny Garrett - Saxophone and Flute
    Kei Akagi - Keyboards
It is a part of the concert video "Miles in Paris" released by Warner Brothers
Records Inc. It shows how Miles communicated with his musicians at concert,
leaving almost everything free to them, but the same time, he demands
an extremely high level of communications and interactions. Interview clips
nicely inserted in the concert scene are a rare documentary of how he was and
what he was after. His words such as
"I always tell musicians I have, it is always a melody within a melody.
You just go on and on."
"All of a sudden, things that you play, that you plan, become old.
You cannot hear it anymore. It doesn't work."
are refreshing even now. This concert video is a must for anyone who loves
music and creativity. It is available both in VHS or DVD format.

One of the most unfortunate live jazz DVD's I've ever bought - how anybody could think it was okay to fade out Richard Irving III's keyboard solo and put an interview snippet over the top??? Extremely disrespectful to the amazing musicians working with Miles...

I thought the same when I saw it, no respect for music and players to cut it like this, unfortunately, it makes the whole stuff annoying and frustrating. I was at that concert if my memory is right, that was excellent.

Totally agree, I can't believe that Miles Davis sanctioned that.

Is that a guitar or a bass playing that lead ?

Foley played a 'lead bass' or 'piccolo bass;' a bass scale instrument with strings tuned almost an octave above the bass. His blue marble lead bass is quite famous. He used effects pedals to disguise the bass sound and create an illusion of a lead guitarist.

@@simonchidgey3215 you're right, and what i really liked, without a lot of guitarist regular gimmickry, notes only, note tons of them if not needed ! i'm sure Miles who liked "silent" musicians loved it a lot.

Miles qualified the interviewer's remark and said "racist white people"
