nothing is heavier than this shit. Denison's riff is one of the biggest I've ever heard - maybe his most memorable - he really makes you wait for the vocals to build suspense. and when the vocals finally show up they are classic. thanks for posting.
Amazing to have this. The finest 2 gigs I ever witnessed: Jesus Lizard 1991. (Underworld in London). Similar set to this. 20 songs back to back. Unforgettable. No other 90s band had such a stunning opening as Then Comes Dudley followed by One Evening. As seminal as early live Birthday Party.
Man that Denison one hell of a guitarist. Shits in the face of whoever thinks you gotta be a show-off to be a good guitarist. And Yow is just in the zone here. I mean he's always possessed anyway:P Great stuff. He's up there with the Devils. Jim Morrison, Hendrix, Iggy, Jello, Cobain, Gira, etc.
@ZackTaylor1992 I'm lucky enough to have been able to see them at this time while I was in high school. This band is still one of the most powerful acts I've ever witnessed.
I saw them in 1994. David Yow jumped into the crowd and licked this girls face, she then kissed him and he started talking about random shit! Never saw a better band live
Thanks for uloading BongHitBrian. I was at this show and this video brought back a lot of memories of The Jesus Lizard and DC Space, now sadly a Starbucks.
Best f-ing rhythm section ever...and Yow is always great live! Saw them at Lollapalooza in 94(?) and again a few years later at the Stone Pony with only like 2 dozen people there....beyond awesome! :-)
I’d have to disagree about David Yow. He was great usually, but I’ve seen them a bunch of times and sometimes he’d be horrible. Once he didn’t make it on stage. A couple times he’d do a few songs and disappear. Sometimes he was just a mess. One time he just stopped bothering singing, stripped to his briefs and roamed the audience, got on his knees and tried to unbutton my pants. Now that’s entertainment. I did always go back though. Being in SF I had lots of chances to see them and when he wasn’t out of it, they were amazing. The band was always perfection, no exceptions.
Holy shit. The jesus lizard were the best live band I've ever seen. i've seen them maybe 5 times. i actually saw them in january 3 months before this show in the same club. for a second i thought maybe they had the date wrong. u are right it's the same riff. whether it was intentional or not remains to be seen. lot's of alcohol and other substances were very prevalent in those days. as a musician and song writer myself he may have subconciously done it. or maybe he just stole it. feeling duped.
@OllieTheBum8182:He still has them, but he stopped using them because they're incredibly heavy and made his back hurt when he got older. He had the Electrical Guitar Company build him a semi-hollow aluminum guitar based on them that he used during the reunion tours.
@ZackTaylor1992 Not quite as good, but you might like Made Out of Babies. They're heavily influenced by The Jesus Lizard, except with a girl on vocals, and they kinda mix some Neurosis in there. The Ruiner is an awesome album. I think Steve Albini produced another one of their records.
@RedHotChiliPrimus probably, but not completely. Listen to "Third from the Sun" by Prong. The intro is the heaviest seconds ever recorded (studio version - you find it on UA-cam as "Prong" without sing title).
Joe Zawinul wrote Great Expectations. Miles Davis is renowned for putting his name on others' work. Jesus Lizard is one of the best live bands I've ever seen. This will be my only post on the subject.
What do you call the playing technique heard at 0:50, 1:05 and 2:47, where the guitar almost sounds like its screaming? Sorry I know nothing about guitars.
The Jesus Lizard Then Comes Dudley Live 4-29-1991 DC 2029PM 17.2.22 as skank bands go.. classic. skank band? nope. the skanks are the kids who dont or didnt like this kindda shit in yer face music until after the fact. for once i was ahead of the game... well, there you go.. that's what comes, in the main, of looking back to begin anew... storm dudley twice lashed the UK with some crappy rain. very wussy compared to USA weather...so i am reliably informed.
I find it so amazing how mechanical this is. Such a kick ass band. Denison is one of the best rock guitar players ever.
I dunno...Simms and Mac are the backbone. Duane's a little tame. And a baby.

That bass tone though.
Reminiscent of Big Black....similar DNA.

More reminiscent of Rapeman and I really don't know why that is!! 🤔🤔
Best ever
Oh thank god who ever filmed this got the guitar part that always boggled me
That's exactly why I looked this video up. I was like "how the fuck odes he play that angry wasp part???"
And it turned out to be pretty easy man. One of my fav guitar parts of all time. I play that song just to get to that part!
Dude, me too. Literally play it until that part 30 seconds in over and over
Which part?
+Chunibrow "angry wasp" is such a good description
Duane Denison being surrounded by darkness during the performance only makes this that much more menacing
TJL is probably the greatest contributor to hearing loss I can highly recommend. Turn it up.
My car pulses and vibrates whenever I listen to any the first Jesus Lizard records at the proper volume.
I remember firme by the voodoo glow skulls... "Play it loud fucker" was printed on the disc. Certainly applies for Dudley.

Love Dave Sims bassline and the band. Respect!
One of his best, right up there with “Blockbuster”.
One of my favorite songs by the mighty Lizard.
I will listen to this. The I will listen to the Fall's Blindness. Then, and only then, i will go bed.
Both bands are heroes of mine....
Blindness, Mark E., genius.

People look at me so strangely when I tell them this is my favorite band....for many different reasons. Been to many shows, no two the same.
Had to revisit this as they just played L.A tonight and I couldn't make it. I was at this most excellent show by the way. Thx Brian!
I saw them in 1994. David Yow jumped into the crowd and licked this girls face, she then kissed him and he started talking about random shit! Never saw a better band live
This video was my introduction to Jesus Lizard. Thanks Warner.
this is powerful indeed!
Thanks for uloading BongHitBrian. I was at this show and this video brought back a lot of memories of The Jesus Lizard and DC Space, now sadly a Starbucks.
Such is life. I bet it's two Starbucks' by now
Laughable irony that some one mention the heresy of "lifting" a riff from a jazz tune. Truly funny.

I am a Yowist.
The most creative vocalist i can think of.
This is the real genius stuff
Bad ass bass player.
factoid: the main guitar riff is "borrowed" from the miles davis song 'great expectations'
Miles Davis wrote the guitar part.
The greatest live show ive ever seen. top 5 best band ever.

Yep saw them at the Roxy in LA, Yow gave me the mic to yell Mary during Bloody Mary, I don't remember much of it.
Surprised Yow kept his shirt on the whole time.
I LOVE the Jesus Lizard... and I would tell that to David Yow's face.
@OllieTheBum8182 David Yow wearing a shirt?!
This is back when music was raw and made your hair stand on end
nothing like a sweaty yow to bounce around on your head when at a gig. who needs balloons?!
Fuck yeah! Love the Lizard. Seen them many times. Always slammin' good.
This video just proves that Daughters later sound was inspired by both The Jesus Lizard and Swans.
And The Birthday Party
You just blew my mind
That bass tone can kill
absolutely great.....nicht zu vergleichen.....
this is so powerful!
@OllieTheBum8182:He still has them, but he stopped using them because they're incredibly heavy and made his back hurt when he got older. He had the Electrical Guitar Company build him a semi-hollow aluminum guitar based on them that he used during the reunion tours.

He's still got it last I heard.
He’s describing a classic 1990’s PBFH, “that’s right, Dudley”!
Oh that was fun!
@RedHotChiliPrimus probably, but not completely. Listen to "Third from the Sun" by Prong. The intro is the heaviest seconds ever recorded (studio version - you find it on UA-cam as "Prong" without sing title).
2:36-2:39. Sweet, sweet unexpected drum fills.
the initial &principal riff come frome a miles davis' tune!! call great expectations
this rules
How odd...Dwane's playing is smoother here than on the record.
That's cuz he's playing the Travis Bean I sold him... Great guitar!
best ever!
R.I.P.
What’s Yow doing?! Trying to decide who’s face looks best between his hands for the “after the show head giving”??!!
Just sayin... 😉
wow! really Yow looks funny in this haircut:) fuckin great performance! one more: thanks for sharing!
I get a lot of East Bay Ray/DK vibes feom Duane's guitar playing
Sam Blackwood evil surf
Quiero tener una banda asi
David yow. The reason they invented Cordless mics
Jesus Lizard! Maximum respeKt!
Whoa daddy. That's pretty cool.
wonder what that guy was saying to him
David Yow's hair looks so funny...
Yow's doing "The Dudley"!!!!!

@ManuelHung well I'll be dammned - that's what I get for not listening to any electric Miles. Remedied very soon.
@CrazyDan1984
I'm pretty sure its a travis bean
So it is. In all the time I've lived with these fuckers I didn't know this. haha
Whew, you're a bright one, eh?
Do you have more songs from this show, specifically S.D.B.J.? Song is so great!
@sex6cult9revolution yeah, sure. the original is by Chrome. not quite as heavy, but a lot more malignant.
@RedHotChiliPrimus agreed
David’s bass tone is ridiculous.
Duane handing out free guitar lessons here....
What do you call the playing technique heard at 0:50, 1:05 and 2:47, where the guitar almost sounds like its screaming? Sorry I know nothing about guitars.
Sound like he’s just bending the g string or to make it play the same note he’s playing on the b string
yo who left their crackhead in the middle of the stage
FLAT EARTH AND OTHER HOT POTATOES!!
JFC!
Is this from the tour with Braniac and Girls vs Boys?
This is from 1991 before Brainiac had their first LP out, so I’m thinking no
what kind of guitar does he have?
Jordan Murray 9 years too late, but it’s a Travis Bean.
You just copied and pasted that from Wikipedia, didn't you?
