- In this video we make Honey Lavender cough drops using real honey and a recipe from the 1800's. We press the drops on a Victorian candy press with rollers that say "Cough" on one side and "Mullane" on the other. This roller set was from Mullane's candy store that opened in 1848 in Cincinnati so this is a true candy throw-back.

There has never been a better time for making Cough Drops
AI Alex Stonks
probably going to keep them in stock for the next few months, until the crisis is over.
I agree, allergy season is KILLING my throat!
That's the idea

My 3 year old and I are happy to see that “candy show” is back. Hope you’re staying safe
I'm glad too, I've missed this!
my kids love this channel (and so do i)
Bethany Conboy That’s adorable 😊😭
Just got my candy in the mail today, the Black Currant and Banana candies are delicious!
Same, sucks this whole current event ruined most things, but not the candy, thats for sure. Greg, the root beer is Delicious!
Black Currant it my favorite. Just bought some more of those along with these.
"Thought their names were Trade Smith and Mark Smith" is one of the best quotes i've ever heard
Those Smith Brothers licorice cough drops remain in my memory as the best licorice hard candy ever. They were cheap, too--in college in the early 80s, I used to buy them 10 boxes for a dollar from a little pharmacy I walked three miles to. And yes, it was uphill both ways. During finals week, I used to go through dozens of boxes. To this day, I can't look at the Krebs Cycle without tasting the ghost of Smith Brothers in the back of my throat. =D
Is that a biology term?
@@austinpresley6187 energy?
@@austinpresley6187 Yes, it refers to a sequence of chemical reactions that turns food into energy.
Seeing Jake again made the self-quarantine much more tolerable.
Is it just me or has he gotten jacked?
@@NerdBuggy Jake has been spending time aerating candy the old fashioned way
we need to know if he has an onlyfans
NerdBuggy he has
Dang he's cute lmao
When I was a kid, Laura Secord (a chocolate shop chain in Canada) made honey menthol cough drops with real butter. They were delicious, and not too strong. They were discontinued in the 1980s, and I still miss them.
That sounds amazing. Maybe our Lofty host sees this post and considers making a cough drop with honey and butter (and a lil menthol.)
I join Bethany and her child in saying so happy to see the candy show back. Take care , in joy.
Can we all take a moment to appreciate Greg's knowledge of both chemistry and history?
My mom has asthma and a "mucusy" cough and is scared to go out for fear of being accused of having corona. Just ordered some of these and I hope they help her! 👍😁👍
Damn I have really bad asthma and allergies so I am coughing and sneezing up a storm, never thought to give these candies a try!
Every video, I watch carefully hoping Greg would forget explaining why they call them drops, so that I can post my snarky comment about it. But he never does.
I covered in tons of videos. Please watch the other 138 of them to confirm.
What I'm curious about is how they get all the half drops and sugar shards out! I guess a sieve or very careful picking haha
For anyone who likes podcasts, the show Sawbones on the Maximum Fun network did one a while back on cough drops! They talked about Smith Bros. as well.
I always hated hard candy, but now you have shown me the light greg. I love hard candy and appreciate it even more because of you💛
I remember hearing about the "trade and mark smith" story on a podcast a while back and that still tickles me every time.
It's just a fun, comic bit of history.
Just ordered some of these, the sunflower image candies, and some pomegranate candies a few minutes ago and I'm already excited for them to arrive!!
At my house, we have a vintage Smith Bros cough drop container :)
This guys voice sounds so calming and relaxing
I always enjoy the videos- entertaining, educating, calming and captivating. Greg's voice soothes the ears and allows for easy listening, while the jazzy background music is a bit like the Lavender in those drops as it compliments the rest of the talk. If I was in the US, I would likely get those good looking candies.
Hey guys! Love the show, really looking forward to getting my first shipment of old-style candies in the next couple days! Got the coffee and the lavender image candies, but after seeing this, I'm tempted to get myself a batch of these to hold onto for next year's cold season. I'm constantly popping cough drops when I'm feeling under the weather, so it would be nice to diversify with some tastes from the past.
You became cancer medicine "a treat" and you don`t even brag. You, marvelous, beautiful candy maker.
Nahuel Perez oh god please no lavender oils cannot cure cancer
@@bredstic9836 that wasn't what they were saying. They were talking about how Greg made a little boys cancer meds into lollipops
Glad to see you posting again! Here's hoping you're doing okay through the current circumstances.
I ordered these (alongside other candy) a few weeks ago, and they arrived just in time! I was discharged from the hospital from a throat-related injury just this morning, and they recommended that if I wanted sugar, to suck on hard candies! I hear the mail come today, and lo and behold my order is here! They are wonderful, I love the delicate lavender flavor behind the honey, and honest to goodness they really soothe my screwed-up throat. :) Thank you Greg & Jake!!!
Just wanted to hop in and say I love your videos 💚
I love this channel so much :) I’m autistic and my special interest is food history and I love the Victorian era too. Watching these videos make me happy, so much so that I started hand-flapping which is something I haven’t done since I was a kid. I can’t wait to try these candies, keep up the good work!
Its my absolute favorite to watch your videos while eating your candy
So glad to see you back making videos (and candy) Greg.
Glad to see these videos are back and the store is still going. Your videos are needed in this world. I love the blend of history and science. Plus I find your videos relaxing.
If you listen to my podcast you know what I've been doing getting my store changed for the new reality
Just got these in the mail today. They are delicious!
This is the first candy I've ordered (just placed it). Honey and lavender sound good but the roller designs make em stand out. Thanks for the videos as always.
Lavender honey flavored anything sounds HEAVENLY!
Glad to see your shop and show are weathering these trouble times.
My mom used to tell me as a kid not to eat cough drops because they weren’t candy. I just sent her this video .
Dropping the sheets to break them up looks like such fun, and the sound of you sifting through the final drops is a very pleasant ASMR sound.
I just ordered a whole bunch of flavored candies from your site! I want to enjoy them all!
He has a really nice voice to listen to. Makes the video even better
It’s so mesmerising watching you guys make candy..
Plus I learn something
That’s it imma order some of your babel fish today, glad your channels back stay safe out there
Can you tell me if they ship through UPS or what service do they use to ship?
Good to see you guys! Please stay safe ;w; I appreciate hearing your voice during these times.
Those did come out perfectly, nice job Greg!
Thanks 👍
Wow! Still making candies! I’m so happyyy ^•^
Honey really does work for cough. It's amazing. One night I was coughing so bad I couldn't sleep. I've never had a worse cough. I didn't have any cough medicine, but I did have honey. One spoonful and I got instantaneous relief. I took one more for good measure (and because it's delicious) and slept soundly through the night.
this is my all time favorite episode so far!!!!! I actually screamed out loud when he dropped the candy!
Such a wonderful & entertaining history lesson. Awesome video!!
Thanks for sharing another beautiful video especially during these trying times!!! Your videos are sooooo calming!!!
Glad you're all OK - love your work!
Glad to see you upload again. Been waiting for you to do so for a little while. Watching your videos is like medicine for the brain when you haven't been able to do much.
I could listen to your voice for an eternity, its so soothing
So glad to see another video. Love this history.
As someone who can't have modern cough suppressants, cough drops are such a life savior.
Love your channel. You give awesome history on each one you make. Thank you
So happy to see you continuing your good work.
I just wanna say I love your videos! I was watching this video right after being scared from some spooky content on the interwebs but after I watched this all my fear just seemed to disappear, so thanks for that! Keep up the amazing videos!!
Much love from Poughkeepsie New York! Hope everyone at LP is staying safe and healthy
I really enjoyed the history portion of this video! The Smith Bros warm apple pie cough drops are my favorite and I had no idea the brand was the first. I immediately recognized that logo on the side of their truck!
My candy is arriving today! Greg thank you and your team! IM SO EXCITED
I never new my town had such a huge cough drop history. I need to go and find where the smith brothers factory was
It is so satisfying when you drop the drops. You should make a compilation of the dropping if you already haven't. I think is would pop on here
Glad you guys are okay, stay safe and stay healthy
Before the crash of 2008, there was a local shop that imported food and tea items and even furniture from the UK. They sold, among other delicacies (and some not-so-delicacies). My favorites were after-tea breath fresheners that were flower-flavored and covered with a very thin candy-like coating. The flavors were violet, rose, and lavender. I have yet to find them for sale anywhere since that shop closed down in 2008.
I love watching these videos! I always learn something new!
I couldn't resist! I JUST ORDERED SOME! I CAN'T WAIT!
You should make a candy with tamarind, citric acid, and chilli powder. It's an Asian flavor profile, but I've seen it in Mexican places too. A mix of sweet, sour, and spicy, with the addictive flavor of tamarind! People will love it 😍
Yay! I'm glad you guys are safe. Stay safe out there
I love it when he talks until he can't breathe lol, so enthusiastic!
It's nice to know that you guys are doing ok!
I came from Hercules candy and I love your channel now. Thank you for educating me!
I like the color of honey so it's nice you didn't add any extra color to it. I need to come visit you guys at some point, all your candy looks super tasty.
I was going to recommend cough drops. Glad to see you're making them ^^
I’ve got no idea what this channel is or what it does but that’s satisfying
God I love this Chanel I’ve been watching for years and would love to work with candy!!
I thought those drops said couch at first
I remember Ludens cherry "cough drops" as a kid. Tasted better than most hard candies! Would eat them by the box full. Learned quickly to seal the wax paper inside the box or wind up with them all stuck together. Good times. I know they are still around.
Just got my candy order of these new cough drops and a bunch of other flavors and they are all AMAZING! Totally better than the hard candies you get everywhere else. Much more flavor saturation and, I don't know how to explain it, and lighter dissolve-texture? They don't dissolve faster, more like, just in a better way? Less syrup-y? Less rock-like? Whatever, it's great! I'll definitely be ordering more once these run out. :)
Drops and teas are a big part of medicine here in Germany. My GP recommends teas for a variety of things before we try other medications. My favorite for calming is lavender tea with honey. I'd love to find those drops somewhere here. My nearby pharmacy carries hemp drops and those I like those ones. They taste great and have calming properties like lavender.
Yay! New video during my break at work 😂 stay safe and healthy
Thank you for the video Greg! Stay safe!
I haven't ben here in a while. How ya ben my dude?
I honestly enjoy your videos. And I hope your company doesnt go downhill due to the Corona virus. Because I very much enjoy you talking. It's very calming and relaxing.
I look forward to watching your videos again man.
Mullein tea is a historical cough suppressant. It's nice with honey.
Honey lavender is such a unique flavor, I made honey lavender ice cream for French class before
I'm eating some now.Delicious, and helpful!
This video was unintended ASMR to me when I was binge watching these types of videos.
It would be fun to see an overhead view of some of the candy-making processes, it would be a sweet addition
Thank you for giving us this video! I love this channel
Great video. Nice history lesson too!
I hope you guys are doing alright Greg.... Haven't seen much from you lately, and I hope you're still doing well.
I wish I could afford to try your sweets, greetings from Scotland 🇬🇧🇺🇸🏴
I'd love to visit someday when there isn't a quarantine in effect lol
I've spent the last 3 and a bit hrs watching your channel today and it's been BRILLIANT. Great work and I now want some candy, trouble is I'm in the UK so it probably won't arrive in one piece 😭
We have a podcast too.
i just came here to say that your channel is awesome
Love this channel. Love the music pls continue and u all stay safe. God bless
There’s this ice cream shop in downtown Traverse City called Milk & Honey and one of their signature flavors is Lavender honey, and it’s the best ice cream I’ve ever had. I wish I could go there again, but even without these circumstances it’s at least 4 hours away...
Ooo these sound delicious! You should do honey rose too! I'm definitely buying some when my paycheck drops
That facemask made me LOL :) I like it.
When all is wrong I knew I could rely on this channel to sooth us down
yay!!! been waiting for an upload :) I really enjoyed all the candies in my order and I’m definitely going to get some more soon! keep on keeping on.
i've watched your videos for a long time, but i haven't watched them for a little while now. coming back to them with fresh ears, i now realize you sound exactly like cecil from welcome to nightvale! what an odd coincidence...
I've sounded this way since I looked in the dog park
Happy to see another video!
I loved Smith Brothers black cough drops. Haven't seen them for sale for a long time, either, though.
You just like calling them drops so you can play with the candy.
this is so relaxing
