Singapore SMART Supermarket Walkthrough
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 жов 2018
- A Smart Supermarket and Dining place has opened in Singapore with robotic touch.
Everything from entrance to payment is done via their app using mobile phone.
With less than 10 items you can scan the items yourself and exit or you can use a trolley and push it into an automated check out where robots will settle them.

Address: 34 Boon Leat Terrace, #01-01, Singapore 119866
Opening: 8am-10pm

😂😂😂 Gotta love those guys. Wonder what Tom Servo would say?
True but it is the wave of the future - the NWO - where machines replace mankind.
@@ohmomair there's just as many, if not more employees needed there to direct people, prepare fresh food, help with checkout etc
I'm prefer go to traditional market
I love this gimmick but nervous inducing because I'm not much of a techy. I don't wanna make a scene that I'm too ignorant of things 😆🤭
Gotta say I love the spectacle of it all. The whole thing feels like an amusement park experience, but the practicality is just not there.
Seems like one of those things that will be open and bustling for the first few months and then slowly fizzles out because people realize just how long it takes. I really appreciate the video though. It’s fascinating.
“Smart Supermarket” would be grab what you want and leave without paying. Like those amazon supermarkets.
@@William_CD well it is partly that as we saw at the beginning but it also has the dining area with the food experiences it seems
It’s mainly about the experience, you’ll maybe go there once or twice just to see it then never go again. It doesn’t try to be something innovative, just flashy
It's the type of place you'd go once, and then tell your friends not to bother going
Yeah its a one and done.
True
Agreed
I’d go there everyday…
The crab was alive. It was so fucking huge and kept in such a small container waiting to be eaten. That's so cruel, damn
We have a tiny market here in my city in Brazil with 'no employees", you put all the content of carts and baskets on a platform and it will enter a reader, you're only allowed to pack what is on the other side, once you pay it will give you your ticket And a card to unlock the door, there are no employees on sight, but they are in the back, 3 working security, 2 maintenance, it's a nice concept, specially at the checkout, it's very fast.
We have that in the Netherlands as well. It's a small to go supermarket. With like very little products mostly like coffee to go and like sandwiches.
You scan your groceries with the app or at a self checkout and that's it. There is security and ofcourse the one who brings all the products there but that's it.
Any video recorded of tiny market?

No that sounds awful.
this is not "smart". This is the use of tech for the sake of using tech without improving the process.
Not for the sake of using for the sake of saving money and having to pay alot less people
awdc 2 are you kidding? This place has A LOT of employees! Much more than a normal supermarket
awdc 2 and is expensive has hell
Ya, not even smart mall there still got cashier.
Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh it really depends because some of the stuff that they bought were under 10 us dollars. I'm America, you can spend over 200 us dollars on groceries in stores like same club. In sam’s club, you buy everything in bulk and you have to have the receipt to leave the store. The carts are huge for a reason and the actual building is like a warehouse. So it just depends
The store name was habitat but they use too much plastic,WHAT THE HECK MAN
Yea, but first comes reduce
@@bigred902 Wrong. US recycling rate is 35%, Singapore is 22%. Next time try facts instead of liberal guilt.

To buy 5-10 items but have to wait for at least 20-30 minutes just to scan..and check your phone, then scan again is not really SMART for your time..i think..just my little opinion 🙂
Why the delay in scanning when every modern phone has BLE/Wifi/NFC/etc? These technologies are much faster to use in my opinion. QR codes need to be deprecated.
This is a shitty copy of Alibaba's Hema store. The implementation looks horrible here compared to Hema.
In my grocery stores. You take a scanner at the entrance and scan your items and put it in your bag that you take from home and put back the scanner before exit and pay at a shelf counter.
Magnus Engström I want a store like that!
Yeah you right I agree with your opinion 😎
Really cute store but seems like a lot of trouble to scan in and out and wait,,,,,,
Evonne Wilkins ah actually for less then 10 items you could scan it with the app and bag it yourself with plastic bags around or your own bag and leave.
@@DancingBacons that is a cool idea, I could see that catching on quite a bit.
The system has room for improvement
@@andrewcurtin7003 That's kind of already being done in some shops in the UK, what you do is that you grab this scanner when you go in the shop, and you scan stuff as you put it in your cart (just a normal barcode scanner). Then you go through the self service checkout, but instead of scanning the stuff like you'd normally do, you just plug in the hand scanner and it uploads what you've bought and you pay.
@@TheNugettinage Exactly, and it's not limited to 10 items (why should it be).
By the time this guy gets his 12 items packed, I've already packed my 40+ items myself, driven home, unpacked everything, and on to my 2nd beer.
As someone who understands how much technology is used in this store, i just wonder how long it had to be in beta form before it was able to be opened up to the general public. Think about it.
Everything is cataloged in a massive server.
Hundreds of simultaneous users.
Entry points and everything put onto a server.
And at the end, the bots, like how much testing that had to be done to have everythjng have such a compact storage.
This.. is just amazing when you look at the functionality of the whole thing.
It's hundreds! As someone who understands what kind of systems you need to handle hundreds of simultanious users I roll my eyes. The issue is not how much work has gone in to making this miraculous feat happen, it's why anyone didn't stop them from doing it at all. I do understand it's asia, and ideas from the top are rarely questioned by anyone below them.
This is an awesome system. There's definitely some design challenges and refinements that are required, but the overall concept and implementation is truly amazing!
There is definitely some clunky designs with the bagging and collection systems that could be argued for a lifetime, and some improvements on the app design, but these are things that will gradually improve over time.
I can see this system being beneficial for the elderly and disabled, as soon as the software has improved substantially and the systems become more efficient.
Now, if only the uneducated masses on here would stop complaining about the plastic waste.. Many people have never read a food standards guide (legislation) and probably never will. Nor have any clue on how non-plastic "alternative" materials are manufactured nor the potential hazardous risks that these materials can have on the environment.
@@saturnGEEK No, this store is dead in the water. I bet investors have been pouring tons of money in there and that the burn rate is crazy. The day when the investors have had enough, that store is done.
Amazon is on to something, but I think they also have some way to go, but they have the capital to do it right and probably will sooner or later.
Another contender for "smartest shopping" is rfid stickers, but for now the scan yourself thingie is what is working and I don't see that changing in the near future.
For this to work you need to be able to take things from the shelf, put it in your bag and leave the store without any hassle.
@@tommykokko2336 RFID has significant issues - primarily in manufacturing cost and security vulnerabilities compared to barcodes. RFID does have a purpose, but not in the manner that you envision.
Amazon and this store have two different markets that they will inevitably target. Amazon's store focuses on rapid purchases without any form of cashier. It's all automatic charging from when you walk in to walk out.
Meanwhile, this store appears to focus more on a casual shopping experience - combining supermarket shopping with cafes/restaurants. That's a pretty rare combination to see in many places across the world. Not because "...investors have had enough...", rather consumers aren't interested. Supermarkets that do follow this business model with active cafes/restaurants are very successful.
@@saturnGEEK Rfid isn't less secure than self scanning, cost might be an issue but also might not. I can see why you try to make it an experience, but I would rather watch a mime or ride a mall train than doing this convoluted crap... and that speaks for something.
Do they actually package the food, just for the customer to go a few meters and have it unpacked/cooked?
That seems like an insane waste of packaging.
Thomas H It ‘s crazy, and not very cool at all.
Maybe reheat it at home.
No it's just optional. You can have it packaged if you are going home for later.
It seems to me that it's an option. They package it because they're unsure whether you're eating it there or taking it home. And even if you're eating it there, they can't have open packages travelling through the store. It looks immaculate,... so it's not surprising that everything would be packaged thoroughly to prevent messes and such.
I mean it's not like they have to go get it cooked in store. They can take it home and cook it themselves.

Why are we working so hard to take the human/ personal element out of everything???? Humanity????? Aside from that I really like your videos thank you for taking the time to make them.
Less human, more profit~
There are still humans here helping you. I don't see the problem with this? Robots just make human life easier.
I personally would like less human strangers when I go out its why I go very late or very early.
For efficiency
Agenda 21?
......yall are ridiculous. Singapore is already living in the future. Everything is so convenient and already at your disposal. And there's friendly professional help everywhere. Worried about your phone dying, well gosh idk keep it and your powerbank charged 😑 its not complicated unless YOU make it out to be. If Singapore had a catchphrase it'd be 'Think Smart, Not Hard'. I like that you can do multiple things here, you and family or friends can go ahead and have lunch, dinner, or dessert while shopping no time is wasted here. There's always something colorful and inviting to see. They're ever growing their own produce and/or spices!!! Id love to move to Singapore when I get the money!! Thank you for your creative content DancingBacon!!!!
It would be very difficult for older people who are not very tech savvy. I personally would love it.
I personally hate it. It's overly complicated and it takes forever once you are finished. Instead of packing it yourself - which takes a minute or maybe two - you send it off to the ether so someone else can pack it before sending it across the store AGAIN. Also, the amount of plastic used is just ridiculous. Why pack shit in so much plastic when it gets opened and thrown away 2 minutes later either way?
Sunset Nebula I’m going to guess majority of the packaging is to prevent spills and messes. The store does look pretty freaking clean for being a grocery store.
I love it too! It's super cool
What people need to realise is that this isn’t a replacement for a normal supermarket, it’s an alternative that has some different elements that are non-traditional 🤷🏼♀️
its a really really bad and slow alternative, that's the problem.
Edit: sorry I didn't see this comment was 6 months old
This may not be practical but its a good start. Maybe in a certain future, it will be better and faster.
Fun fact: People back in the late 1800s thought replacing horses with mechanical cars is ridiculous and a joke but boy they were wrong. So give this smart supermarket a Time to improve.
I am lazy, so I'll prefer to just pick stuffs up, gave them to the staffs along with money, and take them home.
No need to scan myself, nevermind had to take out phone, open apps, and do whatever steps required.
Y’all need to chill with the amount of plastic y’all use. It’s ridiculous.
Alex Undiscovery that doesnt mean they have an excuse for using too much Plastic. Im from Asia and yes it IS common THATS the sad part.
Alex Undiscovery I understand the comment completely if youre asian your confusion with how much westerns care about it is understandable but thats part of the problem. Us Asians are so confused on why its so bad, we find it "innovative" or "handy" WHICH SHOULDNT be the mindset. As for your question, watch the video again. The food is literally served in plastic along with everything else, my advice for you is to keep an eye to those stuff because we just go on our merry way sometimes without even noticing until someone points it out.
Alex Undiscovery I’m from California, therefore plastic is one of my main trigger points lol. It never fully disintegrates or have the best recycle life. In this video: fruits, vegetables and single meals have plastic surrounding them. Just for a one time use then landfill. I’ve never been to Asia, so I don’t want to fully bash them, because here in the United States we use a TON of unnecessary plastic. However, we all live on this beautiful planet together and no matter our country or race. We together need to step back from using hella plastic.
@@mosesramos5594 That's the difference between Singapore and you yanks. The majority of wastes in Singapore are recycled, disposed of for electric power plant. None of those are throwing over to the sea. This is a country with drinkable recycled and desalinated water processed from the sea. Unlike Californian who can't even get clean water during the drought, even though it sits right next to the ocean.
Yo u see them apples individually wrapped I’m like wtf 2.49

Yes people hardly understand how to use self check outs this would not go well here in the US
@@peacemakerjo6166 nah people just really hate waiting here and half this video is just waiting. the reason self-checkout is so popular here is because its faster
This is already going on in north America at Sam's club. I scan everything with the barcode scanner on my phone while putting the items in the basket and when I'm going to leave I check out and pay using the app.

I dont think this modern market is faster... The checkout takes too long 🤔😓☹
To be honest, this is a market that's for the rich and wants to spend their time in it and not to be in a hurry. There are different types of markets and this is of those for leisure purposes.
This type of futuristic approach is also good, yet when it comes to the details of a pure shopping experience, human assisted techniques and approach is unmatched, since it is skills that makes every shopping experience a meme or a memento while making and creating GDP up and upbeat, employment, employers and employees and respective businesses.

Everything gotto start at some point to prove that it can be done, yeah it maybe inconvenient but it doesn't mean it can be improved. At this point this is a experience rather than a convenient supermarket. I smell so many people trying to be "smart" but actually they can't understand the importance of starting something that no one dares to start because it can lead to so many opportunities in the future. Really impressed with this idea, keep improving so that world will adopt from you.

I do like that you can shop for a meal and have them prepare it right there. Would solve the problem of over-buying when you're hungry, plus you get to choose your cut/piece instead of the cook choosing for you. In future, it might work better for produce to be given a computer-readable tag per piece or bunch instead of wasting all the packaging on things that don't need it. Then you could choose to use their bags/boxes or bring your own containers/bags. Make it more like a tech savvy farmer's market. jmho, though.
WOW! your videos are amazing! I never knew they had so much English stuff in Singapore! The prices of stuff from America are comparable (and sometimes better) than those found here in the US! Thankyou so much for sharing!

I wouldn’t mind trying this out every other shopping trip. I get bored with the same thing all the time,so this is cool.
Its a start. One step closer to the future. Be optimistic guys. Its easy to criticize. The tech used here is very exciting stuff. Its a very good achievement. However they have a fierce competition if they want to catch up Amazon.
That is one cool supermarket.
Very cool video. The store is a bit impractical and gimmicky, but the tech head in me still thinks it's cool. Also, I worked at a grocery store 20 years ago with one of the first, if not the first, self checkout in my city. It was clunky and problematic as heck. A fad that would never catch on. Now they're all over the place, and work (for the most part) pretty well. This could definitely be a look at a future of shopping :)
I’d need at least 4 of the baskets! They have got stuff we don’t !! What a wonderful shopping experience!
I love watching all your UA-cam content videos .. I am from Indonesia..
Very interesting supermarket 👍🏻
People who are new in retail do not understand. The most important thing what saves money to business is space. Also market research using the application. The business will know what people buy, age and other details of shoppers at the instant. They do not need to pay market research companies, do not need to stack shelves with 100 of items of the same product, when they sell 2-5 a day for example. Probably replenishment much easier, to look at the list with items and put on the shelves, instead of unpacking hundreds of boxes, wasting time and space. I really envy Asian countries, their supermarkets and businesses much better then in UK. The best supermarket in UK is few times worse then this supermarket. Here everything is overprices because of fucking landlords, taking rents from the businesses but do not reinvest a single penny.
I guess that's true - but it seems to just benefit the business rather than the end consumer while also generating a lot of unnecessary waste in terms of packaging.
You don't need an app to see what people are buying in your store. If you don't know what you are selling in your store you probably have other more pressing issues to tend to.
Rather use self checkout at my normal market. The experience is cool though, and the idea of it is interesting to see what can be improved for the future.
Buying the produce fresh and having it cooked in front of you is always a winner. People love that experience. But i think the shopping experience itself is a bit flawed. What about when a customer has bought boxes of heavy products? That wont be carried by the ceiling conveyers as its too heavy. What about those who have bought a lot of products, how do they carry the bags or how does it fit in that tiny trolley? They'll need a larger trolley and that won't fit in the scanning system. Good but not there yet.
Honestly? Judging by the size of those crates I'm willing to bet they are about as big as a person, it's kinda hard to tell from the angle, but if that's the case they are more then likely gonna use braded steel cable to support the bags, more then likely having it attached through the bag to underneath it as well (so that the bag is being cradled by the cable)
If this is true then those cables can hold a couple hundred pounds, the actual fabric probbaly dosent hold that much weight, I didnt see anything overly large in the store, but I am willing to bet if somone gets alot of stuff they just split it between multiple bags
(Entirely based on what I saw in this video, probbaly not accurate)
Haha. I looked at the tiny shopping cart and thought...ok. But here it is common to buy water, pet supplies, groceries for an entire week, etc all in one go. Pack it in the car and drive home with 289319 products. Guess if you had to take the train or bus, you would only buy a small amount too.
That is one fancy supermarket! I love it💕💕
"No humans beyond this point"
Challenge accepted
I think people complaining about the tech and waiting to purchase don't know about the tech we have in the us that can do this easy. you basically just walk out of the store with your items and the computer sensors know which items you have and what your account is so it charges automatically
I saw the meat prices and nearly had a heart attack. Also why the heck do they package the fresh meat/seafood in plastic only to take it out, cook it, and put it in more plastic?!?!?!
I totally went back a few seconds to see if my eyes had me tricked. But no, that amount was really printed on. >_< I assume you already pay for having it prepared too?
And totally agree. Have a plate and some connection to the cooking area which transports the groceries to be cooked, rather than having the customer handle it.
I think because they don't know if you're taking it home or not, but just in case you do they do that 🤷🏽♀️
Seriously, those pancakes look amazing💓
Catalina Bien they tasted really good too 😋
Looks like they were planning on an online supermarket but then decided to also allow shopping in person. Shopping there in person apparently takes longer than in traditional supermarkets. Cool place but it could use a more convenient method for people who actually come to the store to shop.

Andri Akbar yes it is more complicated but it actually faster to grab something from the supermarket and go cos with less than 10 items u can scan and leave avoiding any queues.
Such a complicated process😅 watching this video and how all the robots work made me realise humans still work faster lol
An ideal way for the big data industry to track everybody's every move and for big business to get rid of a large number of employees while charging the customers more for their products and services.
Can y’all just not appreciate the fact that this is kinda cool? Like it might not be efficient or time saving. But it’s still cool As hell.
