OMG you are a lifesaver. I have been going nuts trying to do this in Affinity Designer and be able to export as a PNG and review on a document as a bitmap fill and I was able to save the file I created watching your video and bring it into AD as a fill bitmap and it worked perfectly. I always go back to Photoshop products because of the features they have and others don't. This saves so much time. Thank you.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this tutorial, Jennifer! When it comes to creating patterns, indeed I have yet to find anything better than Photoshop's pattern preview tool!
Is there a way to export a PNG of a larger portion of the drop pattern? I dont love the pattern it has selected for me in the box and would like the pattern to be smaller and contain more of what i'm seeing in the zoomed out view!
If you want the motifs to be smaller, you could select everything, shrink it to 50% then tile it within your square :) Or you could start again from your diamond square and put smaller motifs in there. The more patterns you make, the more you'll be able to tell what size motifs creates what kind of pattern.
I simply duplicated the group, then clicked on the whole folder and moved it around with the move tool :) If you can't do that on yours, it's probably because you have "auto-select" on. Click on the move tool and in the top bar menu, make sure "auto-select" is NOT checked.
What type of graphics do you upload? I try to upload Canva graphics at high res 300 and they look pretty pixelated when I size them down :/ That's my only issue.
If you change the size of any art too much (whether you enlarge it or shrink it), you will always lose a lot of quality. Export your graphics at a size similar to how big you want them in your pattern and resize them no more than 50%. Converting your elements to smart objects also helps preserve quality.
Hey Ness, thank you so much for this tutorial! I just have 1 issue, my photoshop keeps freezing while using the pattern preview. Does this mean I added too many elements which makes it hard for photoshop to perform right?
Pattern preview is a CPU hungry feature of Photoshop because it generates instant previews... If your Photoshop keeps freezing, it's likely that your computer doesn't have enough memory to run it smoothly. You can try working with a smaller canvas to alleviate that. Good luck!
I am having such a hard time with this, after I duplicate the group, when I go to grab the group and move it (once pattern preview is on) it grabs only one element from the group even though I am click on the "group folder"... does anyone know why it is doing this? I end up having to merge everything to move it at once but then I can't tweak it after it's in a half drop. I am on a mac
You have auto-select turned on! When you try to move your group, it automatically selects the layer of whatever you’re clicking on in the screen instead of the whole group. On your move tool (cursor tool), look in the top bar menu of additional options and you should see a clickable box named “auto-select”. Make sure this is unchecked!
Not both at the same time. What I'll do is rotate one, copy the exact angle and paste that in the other so that they stay consistent. Same thing with scaling! Then you can move them together :)
When I do group 2 and try to move the whole group within the diamond it only selects one object. What am I doing wrong? I can't move the whole group thank you!
@@haymur8533 That is odd :o I had to Google this. From what I can find, it's possible you don't have enough memory (RAM) to run pattern preview. It also doesn't work on artboards, if you use those. It's only available in Photoshop, not Illustrator or other CC apps. And it' not available on the tablet version, only desktop.
@@ArtBusinesswithNess I do have Photoshop CC 2017 version. And yess whenever I try to save patterns from Photoshop it's shows my laptop have low RAM. What should I do?
@@haymur8533 Oh that explains it then, pattern preview wasn't invented yet in 2017 so that version doesn't have it. It's only available from versions 2021 onward.
You can, but if you start with a square after you duplicate it and half-drop it you'll end up with a rectangular shape. If you want the standard square tile, the diamond method is the easiest way to achieve that!
@@kimmcsparran1566 Are you using the vector pen tool? That creates a path - not a line. You have to trace the path to make it appear, or you could use the shape tool and select the line one, and use that instead :)
@@kimmcsparran1566 Well what tool do you have selected? The pen tool and shape tool are 2 different ones, so see which one you have clicked on. If you hover on the tool, the name of the tool will appear. If you click on it, a little menu will appear with more options. The line tool is an option under the shape tool.
What art tutorial would you like me to do next? :)
Are there other kinds of patterns?

Can I ask how did you move the whole group to fit into the empty diamond and did you convert to smart objects. Great video ❤

I love this tutorial. However I tried and tried and could not get my group to move as one. I don't know what I was doing wrong.
You may have the "auto-select" function selected. When you get your move tool, make sure the auto-select box is unchecked.

can motifs be rotated in same place when selecting both? or scaled in the same place?

@ArtBusinesswithNess wish there was a different way, was hoping you might know a trick haha, thanks tho!
can you do this on ipad
Yes! Just create a diamond shape and fill it with drawings :) The adjustments are harder to do without pattern preview, but it's possible.
When I do group 2 and try to move the whole group within the diamond it only selects one object. What am I doing wrong? I can't move the whole group thank you!
I had auto select to layer and when i changed it to group and it worked
It looks like you found the solution, I'm glad!
I couldn't use the Pattern Preview because I didn't use "Smart Objects". I tried converting all my layers to Smart Objects and it still didn't work. 😭
Timing matters! You have to transform your motifs to smart objects BEFORE putting them over the border - otherwise the motif has already been broken.
