Sgt. Ray Holmes from 504 Squadron. He was flying a Hurricane, afaik. Holmes later retired as a Flt. Lt. The German pilot was Feldwebel Zehbe, he and some of his crew members died following this incident.
Did you also know, that in this film, all of the RAF planes and all of the German bombers, are powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engines? The German bombers are actually Spanish built CASA 2.111 bombers that are the license built Heinkel 111 bombers. Post war, CASA used Merlins as they were is good supply.
As a kid in the 70s i read a novel called ' The Machine Gunners ' about a group of kids during the blitz who upon watchin a downed bomber , manage to get to it first and retrieve the MG 34 and basically run amok .
I one time was in a training with someone who’s mother watched a British pilot land via parachute onto their farm. He got out of the harness, walk over to her, smiled knock on the door and asked for a shot of whiskey😂
He was also disappointed as the plane was basically obliterated and he has hoped it could be restored.
Imagine getting the call: “Dude, I’m trying to lay down a water main and I found your plane. Wanna come watch us dig it up?”
Parachuting in and the local kid brings you a cigarette. Good way to end the day
the German pilot was like, " I thought the Japanese were on our side"
I watched the excavation in 2004. Ìt was a Hurricane and was shown live on Ch5.
Imagine surviving a dog fight, parachuting down, and a kid runs over with a box of ciggeretes to hand one to you. The good ol days
He watched as they pulled out part of the engine He remarked " she's going to need new spark plugs chaps"
the kid is an absolute chad for bringing him a smoke after all that
