    Oh god, I cried reading that letter the student wrote to you. Saying how kind you were to him and how you never punished him makes me feel he probably had bad experiences with other teachers. And one of my teachers once told me that the most beautiful gift a student can give you is to say that you were their favourite teacher. I'm so glad you kept that letter. I wonder how he's doing now.

    Thank you so much Sarah for taking your time to talk about your experience with teaching English in Korea and Kyuho for the insane amount of patience for doing the subtitles, only the ones who've done before know how exhausting it can be.
    I'm also an introvert so I know how it can be challenging to be out there in public and exposing yourself but you managed to do it so well and I find it very inspiring.
    I'm sure those kids were super lucky to have you as a teacher. Every since I started watching your videos, I could always feel how genuine and warm-hearted person you are and when it comes to teaching, having someone who can be understanding towards the students makes a whole difference.
    Hope you two have a great day! ✨✨

    I'm a kindy and elementary teacher at a hagwon right now and this video has been so helpful to me in solidifying my decision not to re-sign with my school in September. I get zero dedicated prep or break time, I teach 10 35/40 minute classes a day, and like you said in your video, I'm burning out 😪 I'm going to find a nicer hagwon in a nicer area with more foreign teachers and support. Thank you so much for this video! 💖

      Good for you!! 💪 You deserve way better-NO ONE should be expected to work hours like that, it’s not mentally or physically healthy. Since you’re already in Korea and have experience, it shouldn’t be hard at all to find something better-good luck! ☺️

Thank you for sharing your experience(s), and for helping anyone watching this video with information as to how they can move forward with teaching at a Hagwon. Praying that things open up sooner than later, so you can get back to consulting. ♥️

    I just graduated from a Korean university and I also happen to be married to a Korean. The job hunting process is really discouraging even with an F6 visa. My major is Korean language so It already puts me at slight disadvantage compared to people who majored in STEM areas. I've been working part time teaching young kids English during my college career and I felt the whole "babysitting" thing in my soul. It's one of the main reasons I don't see myself teaching long term. Parents are another headache when you have to deal with them directly too....

    Makes me appreciate the work you put into consistently putting out quality videos without fail every Sunday, especially seeing how busy you were with teaching English!
    Also whenever you guys would film Sarah getting off work and meeting up with Kyuho, not knowing what you were doing moments before the cameras started rolling always added a sense of mystery. Feels like a veil has finally been lifted, lol.

    Many thanks for making this video!! I’ve followed your channel for awhile and its easily one of my favourite channels… it’s lovely to hear of your teaching experience in Korea… I’m not surprised you’ve had overall positive experiences since you seem like such a genuinely positive person!
    I’ve contemplated teaching for years and studied Korean in Seoul a few years ago, but life happened and I never made it back...
    Now I'm an American living in Germany and teaching seems unlikely to happen, especially since I’m older now (35+)… still I'm curious if you’ve come across many older teachers during your time there? And thanks to Kyuho for the epic subtitles!

      Tbh not that im trying to answer for her but unless youre actively learning studying and using the langauge, living in a foreign country doesnt cut it :(
      On top of that her husband basically only speaks english with her so i can only imagine how little she knows compared to the length of time shes been here. This is absolutely no way in insulting her krn abilities rather showing the reality of the true difficulties of learningba 2nd language. Keep on studying yall :)

    • @2hearts1seoul
      @2hearts1seoul  3 роки тому +40

      Not nearly at the level I hoped it would be living here as long as I have. I wish I came to Korea as a student where I could have focused on nothing but studying the language. It’s definitely harder when you work full time and have bills (and student loans) to pay. Working here and teaching English (in an environment where you NOT allowed to speak/use any Korean) is not at all helpful for learning the language.

    It is VERY true about fear of getting wrong answers!
    I grew up in Korea & went to Canadian university, so I had exact "reverse" situation of what you had experienced. It took me a long time to (beside language ability) express myself & argue about things that are necessarily right or wrong to others.

    This was a really interesting video! I was prepared for something a lot more negative but I feel like it's just not in Sarah's blood to be negative 😀
    When I was younger I dreamed of teaching English in Korea but I can't because it's not my mother tongue. That kind of bums me out because I have a degree in pedagogy and have been teaching English for quite a few years now so technically I have the needed qualifications but unfortunately that's still not enough. 😔

    Always nice to see you guys :D even when the topic was not one I would have known to be interesting in advance. But it really was very fascinating! Is there also demand for native speakers of other languages? And what is your background? Did you train with becoming a teacher in mind? Do you have a degree in education, English or pedagogy? Did you already have some teaching experience in Canada?

    Really enjoyed the video Sarah thank you! I’m guessing there are many hagwons for English but do you know if hagwons for other languages such as French are a thing or if it’s rare?
    Please tell Kyuho I turned on the Korean subtitles! I’m learning Korean so I will come back to the video to really study them. Direct translation is so hard!

    Thanks so much for putting this together! Very interesting some of the experiences you had. I can see the difference between western education and asian education in the sense that western is a lot more democratic in a sense, and asian they just hammer hammer hammer you with work and learning. No way could I learn in that asian environment, way too stressful. Feel bad for those poor kids that have to deal with that, just a get ahead later. This is nothing new, but so competitive on the asian side for sure!

    I worked at an international kindergarten in Jeju years ago. The students were wonderful, the curriculum was great and the other teachers were so nice too. The boss and her husband also seemed lovely at first but the boss suddenly changed (she had mental health issues yes, but it was no excuse for how we were treated) and at one point dragged me out of class during teaching hours to just scream at me (and called us all "ungrateful foreigners"). My apartment was moldy but I was young and put up with it. I would have stayed in Korea but I was afraid my boss would blacklist me against other companies.
    I hate that your visa is tied to your job. I'm now in Japan, where it's SO much easier to change jobs. I miss Korea so much but I much prefer the visa system here. I don't regret my time in Korea though and the good definitely outweighed the bad.

    • @2hearts1seoul
      @2hearts1seoul  3 роки тому

      Ohhh no :( Yes...I’ve heard very similar things (being yelled at for no reason, moldy apartment etc.) in my social circle as well. I had no idea the visa system differed so much in Japan, but that’s great it’s easier to change your job if you are in such a miserable position.

    Thank you for the insight into your experience in South Korea as a teacher and illuminating the country's educational system. The South Korea and China and Japan place an emphasis on education and compliance. It seems to work in some ways for their business culture and educational system. But in the end, really, does it advance the student in a deeper way? Here in the US going to school sounds like a vacation compared to South Korea. And yet some of the American students excel and prosper and go on to have stellar business careers.

Do parents sometimes want to check out which particular 'english' their child is taught. E.G. British do not say gotten, we use the word 'take' when you say 'bring' plus so many more different words/expressions.

    Tips for finding jobs? Most websites are filled with recruiters and it’s overwhelming. Especially not knowing which may be reliable, good, etc.

    • @2hearts1seoul
      @2hearts1seoul  3 роки тому +11

      Since I didn’t use a recruiter and my school was recommended by a friend, I unfortunately don’t have any useful advice about that :( However, as I mentioned in the video, if you ask detailed questions and the person you’re corresponding with seems hurried, dismissive, or ‘off’, run away. If they are accommodating and answer all of your questions in a timely manner, they’re likely the real deal.

      If you're out of Korea, going through a recruiter might not be so terrible but do your due diligence. If you are still in Korea, then you can find out via word of mouth or an FB group on Korea. Someone said she liked finding jobs via groups as they tended to be better and such.

    7:58 Ooh, great point about children and parents calling classmates "friends(친구)".
    Watched a video recently where Dr. Eun Young Oh (오은영, famous for the show 금쪽같은 내새끼)
    said it's kind of a misnomer in Korea and that parents should call them classmates(같은반 아이들).
    You were saying the exact same thing as her, so that speaks volumes of the great teacher you were :)
    I guess it took on a similar meaning as when we say "that guy" in English. Anyway, super insightful as always! 👍

    Sarah, I honestly think that this kid at 9:00 had a crush on u loooool also, in terms of class discussion thing, I think Korean kids are pretty shy bcuz they're so afraid of saying something wrong in front of the class (so that they look stupid) as... Korean culture is more conscious of "how they look" in public in general I'd say? A lot of Korean people I met here in Toronto are like that too so that they kinda don't actively engage with local Canadians to practice English, therefore some limited speaking skills - but this could be just my reductionist view lool Korean education is kinda "spoonfed" didactic teaching, from what I had experienced :P

    I agree, about the difference between the Korean classroom environment vs the western classroom.
    I don't know much about Kpop but I have a friend who is a blink and he said that when he was watching "Blackpink Light up the Sky" on Netflix there was a segment with Jennie where she was describing her time studying in New Zealand for 5 years. He told me that she said that she had more independence at school in New Zealand than she did in South Korea. That was one of my favorite moments when I was watching the documentary.

    May I ask you something, Sarah? Where do you get your tops? This one especially looks so nice! Any tips where to get this kind of style?
    Sorry for asking this random question.
    Thank you for making this video! That was quite interesting! I am an introvert myself, so I can really sympathise with this throwing-myself-into-the-cold-water-mindset when it comes to getting better at socialising. Relieved to hear it can get better!
    Btw when it comes to your ads: I am not a fan of these USUALLY (who is) but with you guys it’s like this: Well, they have been honest with us and explained it’s a tough time and said there will be more and not just did it. There’s a legit reason. Thanks for being so transparent and honest :) The reason I don’t use any adblockers.
    I liked your honesty in this video as well!
    I just love watching your videos. Makes me feel relaxed and when I am in a bad mood it helps as well!

      Ohh, thank you! It’s just a simple white button up shirt from Forever 21 I got when they had their liquidation sale in Korea 💦 I think you could find one there, at H&M-anywhere really since it’s such a basic style :)
      Thank you so much for watching the video ☺️
      Yup, in order to keep doing what we love (uploading videos weekly on our channel), there’s no feasible way to keep doing this without ads or brand deals, as we are not a huge channel getting millions of views. We are super selective of the brands we work with and only feature ones we actually use and love. This ensures that we don’t have to just make videos that cater to the UA-cam algorithm to get clicks (not our style), but we can continue to make content that is ‘us’ and what our subscribers are here for, and makes a living as well ☺️ Thanks so much for understanding ☺️🥰
