  • GROUND CONDITIONS ARE BACK TO WORKABLE! In today's episode, Andy and his family finally get an opportunity to work some of their cornstalks, after over a week of wet weather. Marty and Andy go to Windsor while it dries to fix some problems and secure a prized possession. Andy talks about fertilizer, tillage, and much more. Everyone go vote!
    #Harvest #Farm #Illinois
    Andy is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
    It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
    We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

    I worked at Chemical Plant/Phosphate mine in Florida Nutrien has since acquired said facility the plant made DAP, MAP,Green acid and Super Phosphoric acid. Chances are your fertilizer may have come from there.

    Andy: Your Landoll is doing terrific job. What model is that machine? Can you vary the angle of the gangs: front and back?

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  3 роки тому

      Just wait for the next video.... I run a very special disk made by Deere. The landoll is very simple. It is a 7431-33, so 33’ wide. I believe the gang angles are 10-12 degrees, but I am not sure. The gangs are not adjustable, unfortunately. For the price point, it does a fantastic job.

    Is there any advantage to applying fertilizer in the fall instead of spring? Also have you tested out applying Micronutrients to a test plot? In addition to that do you think there would be a greater yield difference between macronutrients or macro + micronutrients?

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  3 роки тому

      The only disadvantage of applying NH3 in the spring is compaction and a plant-back delay. The channel of gaseous nitrogen in the ground is toxic to young seedlings, which means you have to wait a few days after application to plant. As you go north, people favor fall application due to colder winters that help preserve nitrogen. We are about as far south as you’d go before people switch to spring applications. As for micronutrients, we have tried them before, but our data didn’t suggest any major difference. There are certainly high-management practices that work-we just haven’t implemented any.

    At least I know you won’t call my county central Illinois like the people in Chicago do so often. We are only 1 hour south of Chicago. You are obviously in the REAL central Illinois. :)

    Do you guys rent or use a Anhydrous tool bar for your nitrogen we are from Iowa and we farm about 4,300 acres of corn and beans and we have a 170 beef cow calf operation and we rent a tool bar for putting on gas

    • @aTrippyFarmer

      It’s a custom application from the retailer. I talk about it a little more in the newest video. Great question!

    Do you have problems with the N in your fertilizer moving too deep in the soil profile or even offsite over the winter?

    • @aTrippyFarmer
      @aTrippyFarmer  3 роки тому +1

      It definitely happens to some degree, but it is really hard to measure. Last season, when it was really wet, we had all of our NH3 on in the fall. I think we lost 20-30 bushels across the entire farm due to nitrogen issues. This year it seems like our few farms that were all applied in the fall also suffered a yield drag. Nitrogen leaching is a very big issue due to the off-target implications in water sources.

      @@aTrippyFarmer Thanks for the info on what you have been seeing in your operation. My background comes from dealing with things in very sandy soils and even in plant nurseries and we had to be very mindful of N movement, especially when dealing with the monsoon and hurricane season in Florida. We were constantly running both soil and leaf samples for analysis at the lab in order to catch nutrient deficiencies before we saw them.
