I'm surprised Nevermind didn't even get a mention and Blink 182 did.. that's backwards..
I think that cover is a bit too riskay for the video
AllOutWar5000and1 nah.. it's iconic and should've easily been on the list.. fuck a mention..
So if you noticed, this was ICONIC ROCK album covers. We may do a massive series, breaking down covers between ICONIC and COOL, and across mutliple genres... so Nevermind is slotted in the ALTERNATIVE videos (by virtue of being classified as Grunge, a subset of Alternative music). Whether it's more iconic or cool... TBD ;)

WatchMojo.com umm.. Nevermind is an ICONIC ROCK album cover, clearly no debating.. so Blink 182 isn't alternative? You guys have horrible logic.. but whatever.. peace..
BB13131313 Yes, but if you put Nirvana in ROCK instead of ALTERNATIVE, then you may as well not do an alternative list and thereby omitting a lot of great ones. Ultimately, all of the top ones from the underlying genres move ahead to the All-Time list. The logic is actually strong ;) - but I realize it's all about perspective and when you folks see a title in your feed and click on it, regardless of our intentions, you will have certain expectations etc. All good.

Joy division - unknown pleasures
The Velvet underground - self titled album
Nirvana - nevermind
Radiohead - ok computer
The Clash - london calling
You're fucking damn right the dark side of the moon is number one
+Ultron Hahahah I wished that, and spoiled myself willing to remove annotations, I slipped and seek the video at the end, and saw my fav. album cover hahahahaha !
BTW, I got the original vinyl version, the best album ever, from cover to the whole 45 minutes :).
Ultron the Velvet Underground and Nico is more iconic
Unknown pleasures by joy division.
I love that album
She's lost Control is my favorite track
One of the most underrated rock albums ever
So if you noticed, this was ICONIC ROCK album covers. We may do a massive series, breaking down covers between ICONIC and COOL, and across mutliple genres (ALTERNATIVE, POP, HARD ROCK/METAL). We weren't sure how this would be received, so thumbs up if you want us to do a series like that... Thanks!

I agree the most, but I expected nevermind was one of top. 10
But you said that this list covered some of rocks sub genres at the beginning, correct me if I'm wrong
one word- NEVERMIND
+Emile Deaud Never mind is two words
+Walter White Nirvana named (and spelled) their album "Nevermind". One word.
No London Calling? No Nevermind? No American Pie? No Synchronicity? No Still Got the Blues? Lots of good ones you missed in this one...
upcoming lists on other genres.
london calling was a copy/tribute to elvis
WatchMojo.com Yeah, sorry. I missed the Classic Rock albums part. Still think Don McLean, The Police and Gary Moore counts as classic rock, but I guess they could be considered pop, alternative or maybe you just missed them.
@wwwwww....London callings album cover (I think) was more iconic and remembered than Elvis's in my opinion. Everyone knows Paul Simonon smashing his bass guitar against the ground more than Elvis's cover.
WatchMojo.com since when blink 182 classic rock?
How was the velvet underground and nico not on this list?
Titus Mede idk
Thank you
Its Mojo, what can you expect? They’re assholes
For Led Zeplin I would have chose Led Zeplin 4. I mean you can't get anymore iconic than that for Zeplin.
Yup. I have never pondered for hours Zep I's cover as I have IV's.
Or led zepplin 3 with the pinwheel you could spin around to change the cover
Because the first self titled changed music forever, and it was super controversial as the video said. IV is their best but it wasn’t the album that changed rock
*Zeppelin
I think Nevermind should have been Top 5 at least. Whether you like/dislike Nirvana you cannot deny how iconic it is.
WatchMojo.com Nevermind isn't rock music? Och
WatchMojo.com Nevermind is a iconic cover of a Rock album, it fits perfectly in this TOP 10.
Nevermind and freaking London Calling!! Some glaring omissions ya got there...
Sgt. Pepper's should kick something off this list. But Dark Side definitely earns the top spot.
That album is on the sequel list.
I was like "wtf can beat abbey road it's so iconic??" Then I immediately went "oooooooooooooooooh"
+YaBoyFRAG Me too :D
Yep
Pink Floyd is responsible for my two favourite album covers of all time: The Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall.
There's something about minimalism that I find appealing. What could be less bombastic than a refracting prism and a plain brick wall?
I also love the covers of Animals, Momentary Lapse of Reason, and Division Bell.
I came here just to make sure that "The Dark Side of The Moon" is number one. And yes I guessed it, thank you Watchmojo :)
both
+Radhwan Jubair Same here, but I spoiled myself removing annotations: I slipped and clicked at the end of the seek bar ;).
Rod Jubair I came here to see if abbey road was #1. You win this round.
Rod Jubair Abbey Road should have been number one. I came here to see Abbey Road at number one. Pink Floyd isn’t even close. How many people have taken photos at the Abbey Road crossing. Millions
Same lol
I am of the opinion that Nirvana's Nevermind deserved at lease an honorable mention
Really no Nevermind, back in black, appettite for destruction?!?!!!??!
+ellie Kemileva Thats Because This Is Iconic Albums More On Classic Rock Dont Get Me Wrong I Love Nirvana AC/DC And Guns N Roses Are One Of My Favorite Bands But There Not Really Per Say Iconic
+JoseMorrisonn nirvana are classic rock, just because it isn't 40 years old doesn't take away the fact that they no longer release albums and the fact the few they did produce have more sales than a lot of these other classic albums
aex hooder Classic Rock Are Really The Pioneers Of Rock N Roll Nirvana Is Just Grunge Rock I Love Nirvana But They Will Never Be Classic Rock N Roll There Great But There Grunge The Beatles The Doors Led Zeppelin Jimi Hendrix The Rolling Stones There Classic Rock N Roll
RLY what's so "iconic" about a naked baby
+LUIS Martinez name at least 2 other covers that have it?
The moment you realize number one could be nothing else.
It remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988 ;)
Signed
Mr X
except sgt pepper's lonely hearts club band...which for some insane reason isn't even an honorable mention.
gruffalope1 it's obviously 1 entry per act and Abbey Road beat it. I personally see Abbey Road as more iconic as so many people copy it. And the prism is on that many people's skin in perrmenant ink
WatchMojo.com and that has to do with the album COVER how?
*i'm guessing that somewhere in the middle of the debate the line between album and album cover got blurred or lost.* that said, there is no possible acceptable reason how(or why) the album whose cover was the progenitor of album covers as art is NOT #1.
gruffalope1 man you suck
In the Court of the Crimson King had better be on here
The Dark Side of the Moon is my favourite Album of all time. It's perfect in my oppinion.
What about Tapestry by Carole King
I agree with Dark Side of the Moon as number one, but I think Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at least deserved a mention.
Sgt. Pepper doesn't even get a mention !!! The most famous album cover ever . Wow . I'm speechless .
I feel Abbey Road was more iconic
"London Calling" should have been in there. For god's sake,it's the best album cover out there. Also, "Is This It" by the Strokes.
***** I know. Doesn't make it less awesome, though.
I don't really understand how Nirvana's 'Nevermind' has been ignored again...
Abbey Road, Darkside of the Moon, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, London Calling, Nevermind, Led Zeppelin
Thanks, Stalin :|
Sup Stalin? London calling was good but they copied the idea from that Elvis Presley album.
Pretty much every album cover by Pink Floyd is amazing, but The Dark Side Of The Moon is outstanding. Very nice pick!
Nirvana's "Nevermind" should at least be at the honorable mensions
Blind Faith
Fleetwood Mac - Mystery to Me
Electric Light Orchestra - El Dorado
Emerson Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
The Beatles - Yesterday and Today - "Butcher" cover
If you listen to Dark Side of the Moon stoned, you'll realize that Pink Floyd invented time
#FACT
Jude Santillan whoah
R/woosh
What do you mean mate?
@@krednevalga1686 there's a song called "Time" on Dark Side of the Moon
@@illusionprisoner4631 ahahaha yeah I was too naive to realize that one back then still wasn't fan of pink floyd
The first Black Sabbath should have replaced U2
Alejandro Esparza ANY Sabbath should have replaced U2! Lol, I'm a hardcore Sabbath fan so I am biased, but I like Heaven & Hell's cover...
Alejandro Esparza Heaven and Hell is a great cover :)
Agreed, U2 is overrated as fuck
Rock God fuck you
Yep. And Queen’s News To the World should have been on the list. And AC/DC. And appetite for destruction.
Why the Hell is "Abbey Road" #2? Everybody always thinks about the Beatles walking across the street whenever they hear the words "album cover".
IKR
And Sgt Pepper is the REAL number one cover....this list is a total joke.
colderbeer
colderbeer and Sarah Emily show, you guys are damn right.
People know the DSoTM cover sometimes and don't even know it's an album cover.
I think I'm with you on this one, but if you consider "recognized album covers even if you don't know it's an album cover" Floyd should have #1 hahahah
Because the Beatles. There is your answer. The Beatles.
Okay, I have to say...WHAT THE HECK?!!! I can't believe that The Clash's London Calling didn't even merit an honorable mention. There is no other album cover that perfectly captures the intensity, passion, and overall nature of Rock (especially Punk) than that gem.
Never Mind the Bollocks? London Calling?
+Black Flag Proletarian that is a bad ass album cover.
+Black Flag Proletarian - I know! I'm surprised with the lack of punk rock album covers here! What about The Feeding Of The 5000?
The ramones are nothing in the world of punk. My dad was a punk in the 70s and he had no clue who they are. The clash and the pistols all the way
Shae Bryant if you are a "punk" and have no idea who they are then umm.. they aren't "punk"
@@shaebryant526 You have got to be kidding!
The Clash: London Calling. Lou Reed: Transformer. Oasis: Definitely Maybe. Nirvana: Nevermind. The Velvet Underground & Nico. The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's. Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures. Pink Floyd: The Division Bell, The Wall, Wish You Were Here. Sex Pistols: Never Mind The Bollocks. To name a few :)
What happened with Nirvana's "Nevermind" cover? That's definitely a well known album cover.
Jacob Jimenez Nirvana isn't "classic rock."
on the other video.
This is by far my favorite watch mojo video I've seen!
1. The Dark Side of the Moon
2. In The Court of the Crimson King
3....
miparedro76 nobody calls dark side of the moon “the dark side of the moon” what a pleb
riot act that’s what the original title was called
Dsotm definitely should be #1!)
Yes it is
Yunus Qurbanlı While it is probably the most famous cover, I think Animals is the best one, it's just so perfect.
henriquedematos I also think that the division bell album cover is just amazing.
henriquedematos Agree, Animals is my favourite album
Hard for me to choose a favorite Floyd album, but hell, is Animals definitely up there. Everything in the album is really perfect.
1: Abbey Road (The Beatles)
2: Dark Side Of The Moon (Pink Floyd)
3: Nevermind (Nirvana)
4: Velvet Underground And Nico (Velvet Underground)
5: Led Zeppelin 1 (Led Zeppelin)
6: Queen 2 (Queen)
7: In The Court Of The Crimson King (King Crimson)
8: London Calling (The Clash)
9: Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix)
10: Unknown Pleasures (Joy Division)
Ned D. Good list but Id swap Abbey Road for Dark Side of the Moon
Not including Born In The USA makes the list faulty. That album cover is probably the best known cover of the 80's, whether you like Springsteen or not. Along with Dark Side, Nevermind and Abbey Road...those are probably the most well known covers. Plenty of people know those covers even if they don't know the band. I'd venture to include The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan too.
Honestly the should have had news of the world instead of queen 2
imo
10- Sticky Fingers
9- Queen 2
8- Led Zeppelin
7- Whos next
6- Are you experienced
5- Nevermind
4- Rumours
3- Born in the USA
2- Dark Side of the moon
Honourable mentions: War, Enema of the State, Hotel California, Aladdin Sane, The Doors, Sgt Peppers lonely Hearts club band
1- Abbey Road
Since when has Blink-182 been a rock band?
How was that album cover iconic?
If they are considered rock then why wasn't Dookie and Nevermind included?
This list ends with more questions then answers.
If dookie isn't on it then it's not valid
Blink-182 is pop punk
Which is rock
@@edgy7903 James seemed to have missed the part where they said "...and all it's sub-genres".
How are they NOT rock? You DO realize Rock encompasses more than just classic 70's bands like Zeppelin and Queen, right? Pop punk IS rock. Grunge IS rock. Yes, Nevermind SHOULD have been on this list. It could have replace Queen II.
Ok now top 10 metal covers
yep, soon
Where is Nevermind, American Idiot or pretty much any Muse album. Why does watchmojo hate rock from the late 90s to now.
I agree with you about nevermind, but seeing as how I haven't ever seen any of those other album covers, they wouldn't really qualify as iconic, would they?
wtf has muse done to music besides being a radiohead tribute band
u2
*****
Oh, I'm sorry I didn't know that "iconic" means "known by Ryan Davis"
***** Not since the criteria for what's iconic changed to "known by Ryan Davis" which doesn't sound like someone who's into music at all. Good lord, you don't know American Idiot nor Muse?!
That was awesome, thanks for the great songs!
There’s needs to be a part two to this video, there are just so many iconic album covers.
Joy Divison- Unknown Pleasures
I used to sneak in my sisters room to look at the Blink-182 cover when I was younger. lol
Javiera Sofia Yeah
Javiera Sofia same
Haha, I probably would too xD
Enema of the state?
Then run to the bathroom afterwards???
Why isn't Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band on here. I know the Beatles are already on here but Sgt. Peppers is still one of the coolest looking album covers of all time
The Velvet Underground And Nico? Not even an honorable mention?
I'm calling Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, A Night at the Opera or Queen II by Queen, and Abbey Road by the Beatles
i don’t even remember night at the operas cover that’s how irrelevant it is
no Nirvana's Nevermind?
I remember A Perfect Circle had a album cover that a part of the New York skyline in flames and was supposed to be in stores on 9/11, but it got recalled by the time some stores opened, due to said cover art, however the tracks got re-released with a different album cover some time later. My mom used to work as a Sam Goody manager at the time and managed to snag 2 copies of the album; one went to my stepbrother and the other one is in my attic in the original plastic.
10- Electric Ladyland
9- Unknown Pleasure
8- Rage Against The Machine
7- In the Court of Crimson King
6- Led Zeppelin 4
5- Appetite For Destruction
4- London Calling
3- Nevermind
2- Sgt Pepper Lonely Heart Club Band
1- All Pink Floyd Covers (Dark Side, Wish, Animals, Wall, Division Bells, Meddle)
Nevermind, Velvet Underground and nico, unknown pleasures?
nirvanas Nevermind should of been here somewhere
upcoming grunge / alt list
WatchMojo.com Dookie better be on that one..
WatchMojo.com then why is blink 182 on this list?
should've* And yes, I'm a grammar nazi and I'm proud of it.
Gemmie Mae also "Nirvana's"...
Velvet Underground & Nico?
This was a good list. They should do one of just album covers by The Beatles. Many of them have been influential and intriguing in their own way.
Just had to be Dark Side of the Moon such an Iconic album
#1 is gonna be...yep, no doubt about it
I LOVE YOUR LIST, i LIVED THOSE TIMES.
How could you not include Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?
Joy Division: Unknown pleasures should definitely be on here!
Or Warsaw.
I'm just here to make sure Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon was number one. Carry on.
what about sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band? i thought that would be #1 for sure
You guys should do more iconic album cover vids. They are interesting lists.
No Sgt Peppers?
They don't do more than one album per band
Ikr. This list is pretty pathetic. No Sgt. Pepper, The Who only gets an honorable mention and no AC/DC album covers either. :(
Rain Storm I couldn't name an AC/DC album based on the cover if my life depended on it. Also, if bands were allowed to get more than one spot per list, Pink Floyd would have at least 3 out of the top 5. Just saying.
Poirier0708 Highway to hell is pretty iconic? So is Back In Black? And I think the Beatles would take up more spaces than Pink Floyd, tbh. I think they should have put in Sgt. Pepper instead of Abbey Road and maybe given Abbey Road an honourable mention instead.
I really hope Dark Side of the Moon makes this list. If not, I will shit from my throat
YEEEESSSSSS!!!!
Thanks Watchmojo for putting this list to justice.
You nailed it on this one
Its not my favourite cover paticullary but i would have thought sgt. Peppers would have been listed?!
The Velvet Underground & Nico? I can't even name a song from the album, but the cover is what I think of every time I hear "The Velvet Underground"
I'm Waiting for the man?
hipgnosis covers are simply the best :)
to mention is the famous banana cover of velvet underground or the covers of roxy music albums in general. also the deep purple in rock is iconic.
I love all of these. And number one is quite popular as an icon.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles (HOW IN THE WORLD COULD YOU MISS THIS ONE???)
Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan
Moving Pictures - Rush
Freak Out - The Mothers of Invention
Aja - Steely Dan
Rush would be 2112 i dont think it would be moving pictures even though it was their number one sold album
Очень добротная и качественная муз . подборка в разных стилях ...
Dark Side's cover is very magnificent and attracting. And elegant,of course
Pink Floyd could have so many. There's no question that DSOTM is the most iconic album cover of all-time as it's still one of the top-selling t-shirt logos FORTY-NINE YEARS LATER, but The Wall, Animals, The Division Bell, The Endless River and Ummagamma could all have been here.
I think that Supertramp's album cover for Breakfast in America is very underrated however.
Hotel California is a crappy cover.
Perhaps Nevermind could have replaced it.
said no one ever
my bad I just forgot what that cover looked like, carry on
Agree with the first statement. Not the second.
No no it couldn't
nooo... NEVER MIND IS NOT CLASSIC ROCK ugh
Pre-watch: If In the Court of the Crimson King isn't top 3, I'll bash Watch Mojo's head in.
No London Calling or Never Mind the Bollocks, either? I'll get to Watch Mojo as soon as I bash my own head in.
Also, no Trout Mask Replica, Velvet Underground and Nico, Remain in Light, Transformer... But they mention Blink-182 and Meat Loaf.
Dean Dazzle Fucking hell i forgot Never mind the bollocks!!!
holy shit, im so glad someone recognizes King Crimson :D What a band!
They were never going to be here
Some missing, Disraeli Gears, The Velvet Underground + Nico, In the Court of the Crimson King, Aqualung, Blue Oyser Cult's S/T, and some favourites of mine are Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Strange Days, Electric Ladyland, Wish You Were Here and Unknown Pleasures
As many others have said, Nevermind should definitely be on this list. I would have also maybe put 2112, London Calling, Highway to Hell, and Appetite for Destruction on it. Potentially In the Court of the Crimson King - even though most people don't know King Crimson, I had definitely seen that album cover long before I heard them.
Also, I love you for playing Us and Them during the DSotM segment.
Why is it that in the year 2015 one still can't say the word "rock" without immediately talking about the long gone past? It should specifically say "classic rock" here because the entire subgenres of punk, metal, alternative rock, and indie rock are entirely igored. Those are all categories of rock music just as much as classic rock is.
Fuck off 95% of all new music sucks
"i wuz born in le wrong generation only led sabboth is real music everything else SUX"
+Jacob K But the remaining 5 % is amazing
+Jack Harrington This is the best comment I've ever read.
+Jacob K - "Look at me, I listen to music from before I was born! Give me a fucking cookie!"
Too be honest, the Nevermind album cover is also very recognizible all over the world. Yes I know it is alternative and grungy so maybe it shouldn't have been on this list. Somehow still feel it should have been as well.
Share your thoughts please.
What's The Story Morning Glory?, Nevermind, and Unknown Pleasures to go along with these.
Pretty accurate I think, well done. Dark side of the moon hasn't aged a bit, you still see it everywhere on kids shirt.
moving Pictures
Dirt? Alice in Chains? AFD? GNR?
upcoming lists on other genres.
MrOnionCock Grunge / alternative
Aye my man
Well by that logic, rock is music, and metal is music, so why isn't master of puppets on the list? That's why we have genres and sub-genres.
So glad to see Dark Side of the Moon at the top. Classic album and classic artwork. Not sure about the Blink 182 mention.... Never Mind the Bollocks? Appetite for Destruction? British Steel? 2112? Highway to Hell?
Request: Top 10 Decade-Defining Album Covers series
10. War by U2
9. Master Of Puppets by Metallica
8. Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses
7. Nevermind by Nirvana
6. Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones
5. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles
4. Queen II by Queen
3. Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
2. Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
1. The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd
HB: Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Hotel California by Eagles
Morrison Hotel by The Doors
Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen
Enema of the State by Blink-182
Aladdin Sane by David Bowie
Who's Next by The Who
Killers by Iron Maiden
Your list is much better although Appetite should be higher.
I feel that Abbey Road and Dark Side Of The Moon should be switched. Just because how popular Abby Road has gotten. Via other bands copying it, shows referencing it, the popular songs on there, etc. Either way though, both amazing albums.
+Rubber Soul i felt that it was a tie. and they just had to make a decision. id say abbey road is more iconic on the artwork, while darkside is more iconic on the music part. not saying abbey road is not an amazing album because it is and i love it but darkside is the album with the music that cannot be topped or duplicated.
Well I guess it is the fact that dark side is easier to visualise in your head though
Once you unzipped and opened the Sticky Fingers album, the inner sleeve was the same shot of the guy in his tighty whiteys. That was a nice touch.
Wow, I expected The Velvet Underground & Nico to unfairly not be in the top 10. I could have imagined London Calling and Elvis Presley missing the cut, but I would have bet pretty much anything that Nevermind was a sure shot for top 3...
Somehow I also imagined Born to Run instead of Born in the USA
pretty legit top 10. Maybe Appetite for destruction over u2, my only objection lol
Jimmy K agreed
The Clash's "London Calling" is the #1 iconic album of all time...
Spent many hours listening to many of these while looking at the cover
'Moving Pictures' was always one of my favorites. It made me feel dumb for assuming they meant movies, instead of literally moving pictures
I just started the video, and I already know that Abbey Road is number 1.
Or Dark Side of the Moon
and what about sgt pepper?? :O
You were damn close. When I started watching it I knew that Dark Side of the Moon had to place
Audrey Lewis certain like the sky being blue
+AleMeller13 Beh in general they don't put the same artist more than once. And Abbey road is more iconic than sgt pepper :)
Where's Nevermind?
Wpmdering why bat out of hell isnt atleast top 3 if not 1, can remember staring at this album in 2003 when i was 6 or 7 in complete awe!
I knew Aladdin Sane and Dark Side of the Moon were going to be on here :)
I think Marilyn Manson's album cover for Mechanical Animals is pretty iconic and was hoping it'd be in here, but oh well.
