- I am sailing from Tenerife to Martinique across the Atlantic and am choosing the northern route because at the beginning a calm zone is predicted in the south. This cruise is characterized by strong winds and unstable weather over long stretches. Unfortunately, I don't get through without problems either, in a squall my mainsail gets smashed and I also have a few technical problems.
But after 24 days and 2950 nm I arrive safely and happily on Martinique.

Riveted Martin. You’re right up there with Christian Williams, Patrick Laine, Barry Perrins, and other brave solo sailors. I cringe when you talk about not bothering to wear a life jacket on the Atlantic because if you fall it’s all over anyway. Hard to wrap my mind around the thin line between life and death. What i like about you Martin is that you are single handed, you do not exaggerate or start flapping when to going gets tough. Yes rough seas, but you just get on with it. I imagine..... it can be scary at times. However you handle it well. Happy sailing.

Thank you for posting in English Martin. Great video as usual. What an eventful crossing. Your single-handed sailor joke made me laugh out loud. I don’t quite understand what went wrong with the sail, but pleased you found a solution.
Thank you! I lost the main halyard in the mast and could not hoist the spare main sail. I connected the main halyard with the boom topping lift by using a fishing line. I pulled the main halyard through the mast and it came out where the boom topping lift was before: at the starboard winch in the cockpit. With that I gave up my boom topping lift. 😀⛵⛵

You manage to capture the sea conditions very well; the height and size of the waves and the restlessness of the swell which constantly seems about to swamp your boat, but never quite does, always subsiding just before it reaches you. Watched all your crossing with much pleasure Martin, After finishing this episode i went to your website to have a look and was confronted with the news that today, easter Sunday, you lost your mast at sea and are now trying to get back to Martinique on motor.... pffff... luckily you are within reach with your fuel i understand....take care and safe travels back, keep us posted!
Yes, I have a few harder weeks behind. Now, Jambo is stored on Grenada for the hurricane season. In the meanwhile, the mast is being made and should be pulled up in October on Martinique. I am back home for the next 4 months, am enjoying my “home holidays” and meeting friends and family. I also find time to answer all the nice comments and am going to start working on the next videos as I could not do anything for quite some time dealing with my broken mast and everything related to it. Great video Martin! Hopefully you are having a delightful Caribbean winter. Some questions: How did you get your autopilot working correctly when it had "misbehaved"? How did you get you solar panels working after they 1/2 of them stopped? Why, why, why don't you have a wind vane? A Hydrovane, for example, could be fitted to your boat without even affecting the drop down transom.

The rudder feedback sensor stopped working and I switched it in the system to the virtual sensor, which works but less accurate.
The solar panels could not be repaired. Hence, the Honda genset ran more often.
I have considered a windvane, but I am not sure if that works at Jambo as I could not install it at the centre of the stern because of the swimming platform. And I am fine with the current system working even very well in rough sea. Never change a winning team! 😀⛵⛵
@@mjambo697 You could install a Hydrovane, which works well off-center and is used by many sailors with a swim platform. I don't care very much about my swim platform and rarely used it, so I installed a WindPilot, German made, on the center-line of the stern. I have a below deck unit Raymarine plus an tiller pilot that attaches to the emergency rudder as well. I use the "belt and suspenders", approach which is likely a good way for single-handers to view self steering.

Just saw this one Martin, as I have been in blue water myself for quite a while. Really bad luck with the unintentional gybe that destroyed your main sail. You handled it like a pro, as always. You had quite a bit more wind than I did on my recent Transat. Maybe we can jointly ask mother nature for a happy medium. OK? ;-)
