- Today in Hearts of Iron IV it's time for another What's The Point Multimix, where we will be exploring a multitude of supposedly pointless paths to see what's good about them, what's not and maybe figure out if in fact these paths aren't pointless at all.
Along the way we will go from the Baltics to the Pacific, from fragile democracies to warlords begging for Japanese support every style of path will be explored.

Did intend for this to be out on Friday but obviously I didn't keep to that lmao. Also little notice for you achievement hunters doing what I did with Guangxi is probably the easiest way rn to do Battlecry, post-recording I continued that run and taking out Japan, securing China's cores was as straightforward as you like. I'd recommend giving it a go.
Oh, for the Bulgarian one, you're so close. "Dominance in the Black Sea" would grant you wargoal on every other nation that borders the Black Sea.
@@krasnamerah1926 You could not have said that in a more convoluted way, my point still stands too. Balkan Fed does it better.
@@BubblesZest, bruh. I misread the foci. It's "Consolidate Dominance of the Seas" which only gives you 2 naval dockyards.
"Dominance in the Black Sea" is on the armed forces branch.
The entirety of the Hungarian focus tree, outside of Austria-Hungary and MAYBE historical could deserve a “What’s the point?” episode
I mean, at least you can get free territory since Germany will do the partition of Czhecslovakia eventually.
Austria hungary is amazing
The Austria-Hungary tree is honestly pretty bad too
It relies on RNG to decide whether you're gonna get Czechoslovakia or Transylvania (sure, there are ways to increase the odds but it's still random) and then the rest of the tree is just 70 day focuses for claims
Hopefully Paradox will one day go back to it and make a similar system to how Poland and Lithuania can infiltrate and spread monarchist sentiment into surrounding nations to unite
@@Scotty30 Honestly, Czechosslovakia is the hard part, getting Transilvania is quite easy in comparation, just choose Italy or Germany.
@@DarthFhenix55
I wouldn’t say any of it is hard or easy, it’s just waiting for events and reloading saves until you get the one you want, pretty uninteresting gameplay imo
I think it's strange that hungary's communist tree is so lackluster when Hungary literally had a communist government in 1919 that was removed forcefully by the Romanians, Czechs and French. You could very easily have a path like 'Bring back the exiled republicans' like Greece. You could also go stalinist or maybe make an anti-soviet Union of Danubian Socialist Republics. There is so much you could do with communist Hungary that it's kinda obvious that Paradox just didn't bother putting effort into the tree
Thus leading the effort to fix up these screwed trees to the modders, hence why I watch Bubbles Zest’s video to improve the trees myself (or gain ideas to), which is kinda sad when you think about it
They had it
It was removed
And Hungary became the most anticomunist nation in Europe
Its not that they didnt put "effort" you ready to jump the gun dumb kid. Its an early DLC from early stages of development if they were this "lazy" throughout the whole of development you'd see they do this with all DLC's and updates. Get a grip.
I know. Its because they know most of their audience are monarchists and nazis
This is like how the US Bankers’ Plot was an actual effort to overthrow FDR and undo the New Deal while taking a more anti-UK stance and Paradox omitted it from the game for a lackluster brown path.
I mean, “Yellow Switzerland” the point is in the name
yellow switzerland hours
@@BubblesZest If they’re not going to give me back my yellow Prussia, I’ll make do with yellow Switzerland
1:09 That brought me back traumas about Vic2's Yellow Prussia
For Japanese puppet. Could you, in theory, click on the Ask Japnese Subjigation, a day before the focus completes, then when the event pops up that they accepted, wait for the focus to finish, THEN click on the even and become puppet?
The point of getting Japanese support is to get the achievement panda-monium
I'll say this about the Lithuanian Junta, you will probably make more Army XP than any other country in the game when not at war. When all buffs are applied, the Lithuania Junta can make 0.9-1 army XP a day! I honestly like this path due to it being a "Prussia of the Baltics" sort of path for Lithuania, especially witht the focus "Martial Law," with grants Baltic wargoals.
Lativa's One however is pretty useless.
Never understood why the Baltic States got focus trees, its nice but just why. Personally, my favorite trees are Mexico and Bulgaria, its not too complex yet whenever I play it, it does feel like you are trying to reform yourself into a proper fighting power after being restricted due to WW1 and also dealing with the pressure of other groups trying to overthrow you too. Its just how it flows, it feels like a complete focus tree.
That or maybe I like playing minor countries over majors, God I wish Belgium and Austria got a proper focus trees.
I mean, I suppose Baltic countries getting focus trees furthers Paradox's goal of eventually giving a unique focus tree to every single starting nation. It is a bit odd they didn't give a tree to Finland in that DLC though, since one of the big confrontations for the USSR before the Great Patriotic War was their war with Finland - a conflict that was humiliating and humbling for the Soviets despite the fact they technically "won". I like Lithuania's though due to it enabling you to expand into both the other Baltic nations and Poland and getting cores on all of that - yeah, you can also do that as Poland, but I guess it's just in Lithuania's case you start so small and grow to the size of a major country (also you get the man with the wild hat).
But don’t you want a Swiss focus tree bigger than Germany’s? Because of their huge role in ww2 of course.
@@hobohabsburg8447 I especially like the feature of anchlussing everyone around you with no reason or context at all
@@arielbemeliahu8619 Ultimately it's a game and fun is the end goal. This is why meme-tier alt history paths don't bother me if they are fun.
@@DrewPicklesTheDark no idea why i have never thought about it like that lol. I think switzerland is just a different game to hoi4 though
"It's so small" yeah well I'm sure New Zealand's focus tree has a great personality.
Another valid entry into this series would be the Lithuanian communist path of enter opposition. This path is in some places downright broken as unlike with the soviet path you don't get cores from doing the Lithuania-Belarus SSR. There are more issues with the communist path in general like the fact that you have a button that cores all of the baltics, yet you can't bypass a united Baltic SSR. Yet another problem i find with the focus is that when doing Lithuania-Belarus SSR, you only get eastern Belarus unless you wait for the soviets to take western Belarus from Poland and only then do the focus, which doesn't seem like that big of a deal until you realise that the focus that gives wargoals on Latvia and Estonia comes after that focus. Why couldn't they have made the focus that gives wargoals on Latvia and Estonia come before the one that annexes Belarus is beyond me.
In my opinion the Military directorate should get some serious civilian industry debuts and maybe some other political debuffs in exchange for huge bonuses for combat (maybe on the level of crusade against democracy)
They could literally even call it crusade against communism or somn.
Jokes on you! I've done that non-aggression pact for lifting army restriction during my Bulgarian achievement playthrough XD
9:30 magine a bunch of uprisings on every island in this ocean because New Zealand has chosen an alternative path. Doesn't sound VERY fun.
me and the boys on our way to enjoy the new whats the point
What's The Point of New Zealand?
Lord of the Rings sets
În defence of New Zeeland's focus tree, you can form polynesia quite easy, you just ask for the islands while the Allies do everything and în the time you are waiting, you can bully german panthers with one, max two, big bob divisions
I'd argue just playing Hungary has no point (apart from Austria-Hungary). A (kinda) close second would be the fascist path(s) because it least you get some cores and maybe a Slovakia as a puppet, but all other paths are just useless.
Excellent research! And fully agree with formable nations are ok if they are hard to do.
Also communist hungary tree is pointless because you can flip to communism while doing a much more worthwhile path. The advisor isn’t locked out when doing a different ideology
I love the wonky nature of the Death or Dishonor trees enabling you to just do whatever paths you want as any ideology. Like doing the self-inflicted border-goring and reintegration as Titoist Yugoslavia, which enables easy expansion without needing to fight the Allies since they guarantee you for some reason when you go down this path.
Hungary's focus tree has literally no historical focus tree. Thats how bad it is.
hoi4 games be like:

I have played Bulgaria in so many ways , there is no way to use assert our claims
Loved the video
Have you done a video about focus trees that basically break if the AI doesn’t play along or you don’t perform as well as you need to? Like if you’re taking the civil war route as Ethiopia but you don’t control enough of the country to do the focus to start the civil war, the focus ends and you can’t do any political focuses anymore.
Yo bubble zest, try Playing Galicia, Basque Country or Catalonia (you play with them releasing them as Spain, or just looking in the custom game rules)
Whats the point of doing the greater italy part of the italy focus tree instead of the roman empire one
i have way too many hours in hoi4 so ill explain why all of these trees exist:
Helvetic republic: France aligned Switzerland that can do alpine fed cores, a great path if you wanna play pro allied swiss, also its funny flag
military dictatorship: a non aligned version of the democractic path, very useful in mp, also cool flags if you wanna have a baltic faction for memes
democratic king: im not gonna pretend this ones good, there is a cool thing with the swedish king but thats literally it, but like i mean its death or dishonor tree so eh
New zealand in general: you make big bobs and join a faction, thats it, it rlly needs a rework
communist Hungary: you can get some cool stuff if there is a player sov, but this one SUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKSSSSS never do it we need a new one and it rlly sucks cuz communist hungary had the chance to be their coolest non hist path tbh with all the history surrounding it but yea we got nothing
join allies bulgaria: i actually really like this path, like yea there's no balkan union but you can get your claims on your neighbors but you have to let the axis take them first , you get a ton of factories from one focus, and you get some very good army bonuses, also our duty in the balkans does give eco bonuses so there's that, but htis tree really shines if you have players on a ton of balkan nations and you form a balkan alliance, then you are unstoppable with this path, good in mp and sp
requesting japanese support as the warlords: you just become manchuria thats it, fun in MP, like a ton of fun. but like rlly only necissary if your japan is annoying. i would reccomend this path to anyone curious. also if ur bad and need a carry and all of china for free you want this path
hard formable: I love these dude
I feel like if the Hungarian communist tree was remade, Hungary could be one of the best nations.
I also think Slovakia should become Hungarian cores if they accept overlordship over slovakia
For a player, except Austria-hungary all paths of Hungary is pointless
what’s the point of greater italy?
Latvia's dictatorship color was so cool I tried to survive Soviet's 4 times. With Lithuania you have a chance but Lativa you can't get enought manpower.
Hungary’s communist path should have two options to either be an independent aligned communist country or soviet aligned communist country.
Every communist path has that
Uninteresting
@@user-pn7jz9vr2z I meant as a starting point and it branches out completely and each are different from each other.
@@user-pn7jz9vr2z The problem with the communist paths is since communism is an internationalist ideology they are pretty limited in what kind of ideas they can use. With fascist and unaligned (mostly) and even democracy to a degree they can draw from all sort of unique cultural and historical ideas to make focuses from, even if completely unrealistic. On top of that, even during the Cold War communist states were effectively "Bend over for the USSR" or "Do our own thing." Honestly, what might be more interesting with communist minors is if you can actively join the Allies or something rather than creating some garbage faction that never amounts to anything.
Democracy has the problem of not being very expansionist in a war game, but that is an easy fix, they can just make it so democracies can declare war on non-democratic states. How many times has a democratic state toppled a non-democratic one in the name of democracy throughout history? All the time, mostly the French and Americans, but others have done it too.
Unaligned is very hit or miss. It works when the country once had a large empire. It doesn't when they didn't. Most non-aligned states that are not monarchies or anarchist Spain are military dictatorships. I'm not really sure how this can be fixed besides possibly making diplomacy pragmatic and making it equally easy to join one of the other factions. It would make sense if a military dictator sided with whichever faction was most convenient for them.
@@DrewPicklesTheDark so the problem with communism is communists itself
Ironic
@@itapi697 yeah
But as the other guy said
Not much to branch out
5:55 democratic: no elections. What!?
How do you win border conficts as clique? It feels like it became impossible since BBA
Idk they seem to work for me, just max out Soft Attack.
Start producing artilerry asap and make really good infantry division. 4 art + 6 infan etc is enough to break most of the divisions. The worst thing that could happen is mountain terrain but every division suffers there so just equip them with engineers or add a few more inantry so you could have enough org.
What is the point of the other italian fascist focus trees.(Italo Balbo,Dino Grandi,Grand council.)
I don't think they are video worthy. Yeah as Italians you can annex everyone and form Rome in 1937 but as standalone, hist vs anti-hist both of the alternatives gives great bonuses.
I think a cool idea for new Zealand would be having a sort of faction management/balance of power mechanic but with the Maori rights/conscription. Perhaps if things get too much one sided, a monarchist Maori NZ could be possible. Maybe I'm being too larpy idk but I feel like it'd be a cool idea
6:16 it's because no one plays democratic Hungary at all
Seek japanese support is kinda usefull actually. As Guangxi did it, turned fascist, joined japan and completed rival goverment focus while war against China. This means every state conquered by japan controlled under me and at peace deal got most of it. It was way better then border conflicts
So basically my run? Seek Japanese Support made no difference in that.
