- Lerato Matji reports on the township communities' call for the shutdown of foreign-owned spazas. The calls follow the death of 2 children in Soweto. The owners are accused of selling food that has expired and in some cases, poisonous. In total, six children have died since the start of the year.
These shop owners should be deported and stores closed.

Easy for us to say “stop shopping there”. These shops cater to poor people who have many mouths to feed with very little. These shops price their goods very low making them the preferred place to get food for disadvantaged families. But yes I agree, they need to shut them down immediately before the community takes matters into their own hands and we are labeled xenophobic.

All foreign-owned spaza shops (convenient stores) are illegal, registered or unregistered. Small business enterprises like that are only reserved for the locals according to the constitution. The people who register these shops should also be arrested because they are corrupt officials. Furthermore all foreign-owned businesses need a minimum of $250k (~R5million) start up capital to be considered at investment and get registered according to the constitution. Anything below is just hustling, likely not gonna employ locals and going to be in direct competition with locally owned small to medium business enterprises.

SA has legal and registered, tax-paying food factories that pass inspections. We produce a lot of our food locally and even export to other African countries. These people have opened their own illegal factories where they produce their own counterfeit and poisonous items. They're not bringing things from outside.
