Everyone talks about NHL 94 on the Genesis, which is fun, but NHL 96 has all the fun of 94, but now with a proper season mode and stat tracking. That one is really peak NHL. The new ones are very complex, that's the biggest issue I have, but they do offer NHL 94 controls, which sort of work to make it simple.

Honestly NHLPA (93) imo is smoother and better gameplay. As a Flyers fan it sucks that Eric Lindros isnt in it, but it's always been my go to Sega game
You really can notice a huge drop off in innovation after 2k lost the rights and they didn’t have to compete. I personally liked the 2k games way better growing up and would like to see where they would have ended up. EA has ruined hockey games for me. All it is now is a roster update for single player players and a cash grab online mode.
The one feature in more recent games they could have added was creating custom goalie masks. Or at least have unlockable fan-created mask art in the "Create A Player/Team".
I know someone else already mentioned NHL 94, but it was so good that I have to mention it again. The control you had over the game was the best. Then NHL 95 happened and that was quite possibly the most disappointment I've ever had in my life. lol
Amazing game. Music, menu, and gameplay is top. Still playing it on some chinese handheld console r33s and ps1 emulator. Had it on PC too with Homeworld Cataclysm on the same disc back then. 🙂👌
