    Great video. I actually had a stop piece on my '68 SG Special, and through a desire to return it to it's original condition, I had the vibrolo re-installed on it. Worst decision ever - it would just never stay in tune and because of that it sat in the case for 2 years. Watched this and have put back on a stop piece & it's quickly reminded me why it was always one of favourite guitars to play.

    I don't know about the qualities of modern Vibrolas, but I use mine all the time as a G and B bender unit in combination with the other strings in the wraparound bridge (it's a 1968 SG Special), and never goes out of tune, and I can do things with it that no other guitar can... I have around 3 videos on my channel showcasing that! Check them out!

    Hi Matt, really love your videos mate, definitely one of my favorite channels on youtube! I just wanted to ask, how you do you get your camera to rotate ever so slightly during your interview shots, is it some kind of automatic tripod? I'd really love to achieve the same effect when filming myself playing guitar! Keep up the superb videos!

      Hey there it's actually a product by Redrockmicro called a One Man Crew - not cheap but a very handy piece of kit. I'm a video director (for a living) so I invested in one a few years back when they were a bit cheaper! You can see them here:

    I am now in love with your channel. The analytics and tone details you're mentioning are what I'm mostly interested in. Cuz everything affects the tone of a guitar, if heard in person, not through youtube. Could you do a talk with a guitar builder on the body and neck laquer&finish topic?

    Generally, with a trem of any kind, the problem lies in the strings going south upon arm depression, and getting hung up at the bridge or the nut, trying to come back north. A good lube will solve those problems. There is a video out there of a guy giving hell to his virbrola and that sucker comes back into tune every single time.

    Wait so how do you install the hard tail piece since it doesn't have the right size holes for it? Did you have to drill a new spot for it?

    I have an Epiphone SG Les Paul Custom with the vibrola set up and I put roller saddles in the original bridge, set the intonation, and it stays in tune with no concerns. The tone is very different than the tone of my 120th anniversary Gibson SG. They both have equally desirable qualities and sound great. The Epiphone is much heavier because of the vibrola and it has the pelham blue finish and the Gibson is a natural mahogany. I love them both.

      adamnson hey Gibson have admitted that quite a few of the Tweedy SG’s were faulty and their Vibrolas weren’t operating correctly. If you are the original owner they will fix em up for free. I’m not the original owner. The vibrola on mine was awful... normally I like Vibrolas. Matt

    I thought your Luthier in Melbourne fixed your action and vibrolo issues? No?! I have a 2017 SG Special T with a lyre vibrolo, roller bridge, and it stays in tune, and looks amazing! I'm running 490r/498t nickel covers and hardware, cherry red stained walnut, and it has a flamed maple neck, so I stripped it down a tad to look road worn. The thing is a destroyer, and keeps up with my other Gibby's. 4 Les Paul's and a 86V. The SG fits right in!! Looks good on stage, AND the rack. That nickel vibrolo and maple neck pull some chimey bright AWESOMENESS out, I just can't get with my LPs! The 86V has Shaws and a factory Kahler from Gibson's Custom Shop, and it kicks AZZ sound wise....... I think you'll put that Lyre Vibrolo on again down the road!!

      ...is the lyre vibrato..the same as a..maestro...if..frank marino used a ..maestro vibrola on his sg..and did insane dive bombs,etc..without tuning probs...why can’t other people.why is this fella saying he could’nt keep his maestro..in tune..and another guy commentating that his epiphone sg..with maestro vibrola..goes out of tune like crazy.....in short does the..maestro vibrola slung great and stay in tune no matter what like it does for..frank marino.....or is it a crappy toned unusable piece of crap...

    Sometimes changing an instrument to fit your needs makes it your signature Model Guitar I don't feel ever obligated to keep a guitar stock if I want something different on it I will change it and make it my Frankenstein and make it play how I wanted to play so kudos to you for doing what you wanted to do to make the guitar correct there's enough other Gibson SG's out there if somebody wants one they don't have to deal with yours that can deal with their own and leave it stock. In the meantime you get to enjoy your guitar the way you want it. And I'm sure it will bring out the artistic creativity in you now that you feel good with it

    Glad you've got the SG dialed in! I have an old SG Jr. that can be strung wraparound as well as via the vibrato. There are definitely tonal differences between the two methods. I go back & forth over which I prefer. :)

    This might have something to do with the "metallic bite" you make reference to at 4:20. This is from a Premier Guitar magazine review of the Tweedy SG-
    The bridge pickup is both bright and full, though not quite as rotund as a Les Paul. In fact, chords played with the volume and tone wide open can have a sort of brashness and a not-unpleasant rasp that you can probably chalk up to the Maestro tailpiece, which transfers vibration less directly to the mahogany body and adds a bright-ish resonance.

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  7 років тому

      Wow well there you go - great minds think alike:) Thanks for sharing that - I'm glad that heap of tin is off the back of my SG!

    • @Ganache30
      @Ganache30 5 років тому

      There are always pros and cons to tone. Something is always sacrificed. Here are the following two paragraphs from that article that you omitted: The neck BurstBucker is also tinged with a touch of brightness-again probably helped in no small part by the Vibrola and mahogany body-that makes the Tweedy a lot less muddy and somber in the neck position. If you’ve ever walked away from a Les Paul or SG because the neck pickup sounded like sludge, the Tweedy might have you thinking twice. The neck pickup makes a great, if unexpected, match for jangly arpeggios and funky percussive vamps.
      In general, the interplay between the BurstBuckers, the Tweedy’s mahogany construction, and the lively and metallic Vibrola translates to a little less attack and sustain. But this also means the Tweedy is both harmonically rich and a little more succinct, qualities that yield a lot of voices and character.

    • @Ganache30
      @Ganache30 5 років тому

      But if it can't stay in tune, then it was the correct move, if, of course, you tried every other not-so-drastic option. Did you try 'nut sauce'? Lubing the nut helps for tremolo bridges, so does locking tuners. There are other options that can help with stability if you don't want to lose the maestro and enjoy the unique tone that comes with its presence.

    WTF? When i bought my 61 LP w/vibrola it didn’t play exactly good. There were a lot of tuning issues. Those tuning issues were easily addressed with a bit of maintenance from the 2 vibrola springs. It plays like butter now.

    Serious question... what’s the name of the font you use for your gold “TONE” logo at the end of every video? Looks really cool and am dying to know. Also, why didn’t you just throw a full length bigsby on the SG? That way you’ve still got a functional tremolo and it covers the holes. I’m not talking about the b5 but the b7 one bigsby offers. Just wondering. Thanks

    Glad you've been able to resolve your tuning issues with this guitar. Clever resolution and classy look. Years ago I ended up removing the Gibson Maestro Vibrola (it was the short style) from my Kalamazoo SG style guitar and noticed the same improvement in tone that you did even though it is an inexpensive guitar (I'll probably put it back, though as I'm restoring the guitar). Nothing more frustrating than tuning issues. Right now I'm struggling with a strat that has them since I've unblocked the vibrato. I have two others with no problems whatsoever and this one is set up exactly like the others yet goes out of tune if the vibrato is engaged. Frustrating. From my understanding the Tweedy SG production didn't last long and was discontinued after about a year. I wonder if your problem had something to do with it. The fellows at Gibson have made some puzzling decisions. I recall one series of guitars that were covered in reflective mirror-like pieces. Then there was the unbelievably beautiful Zoot Suit series. And who could forget the Firebird X?

    • @TONEonline
