Sadly, more don’t care about older music, unless it’s on a movie or clip they watch. There are far more who only listen to mainstream pop music, rap and R&B. Some, also listen to pop country, which most of it is now. I’ve played with some younger folks, in the past few years, and they take they compile set lists, based on videos or stickers on the most covered songs. I played with a band thst wanted to do a Reggae meets Southern Rock vibe, and the number of songs they had, that they thought were originals, by either Ziggy, Stephen or Damian Marley, but were actually covers of their father’s was shocking. I then played 5 or 6 Marley songs so know, that aren’t on the Greatest Hits album, snd they’d heard none of them before. I found this with several groups of musicians I played with. They’d know an artist from the past 20 years, maybe back to the 90’s, but other than the most well known ones, they wouldn’t know the music. Most of them had never played a Hendrix song, or so they thought, because several though Little Wing and/or Bold as love were SRV and John Mayer songs. I asked if they ever liked at the songwriting credits, snd most said no. I’ve found young players, who are doing better songs, like Grace, and know their music history more, but they were the exception. *guitar isn’t dying, it’s just a million miles from being a part of the mainstream, as it was in every decade since the 60’s, through the horrid 2001-2010 years. Always grateful musicians out there, but most rely on playlists made by a streaming service for them, instead of listening to an album by one artist.
What a find this young lady is, personality, intelligence, talent, beauty..... she has it all. The future looks bright for you Grace and I hope you have a super career ahead of you. You certainly deserve it. I am blown away by your skill and at only 17 years old it is incredible. I have played blues for over 40 years and am so envious of your talent at such a young age. At 17, I think I was still trying to work out who I was. I was clueless at 17 and here you are, confident, mature, intelligent and so talented. Keep on rocking Grace, and everything of the very best for your future.
How do you know someone is a guitar prodigy? When they are 17 years old and people are gifting or lending them a '61 SG, a '59 Burst, and a '60 335. Also when everyone in Nashville wants to play with them (or do interviews). Looking forward to everything Grace is going to do with the guitar!
