I, too, will defend the hunger games until the end of time. Reading it as an adult really just opens your eyes to all of the hidden meanings and the awful realities of the book, how it applies to our world today. I have a political science degree and I feel like it would be good to teach in a politics class! Especially since she really utilized just war theory in her books!!!!!! (Read from an interview put in the 10th anniversary edition of THG)
i genuinely had a completely different experience reading as a 10yo vs 20yo! i definitely think people are way too harsh on it bc of how it became a 'teen girl book'
YES!!!! as a teen, i didnt like reading but i like watching movies so i watched it and enjoyed it! as an adult i decided to rewatch it because i couldnt remember shit about it anymore, BUT now that im into reading, i will read it lol!! too good of a concept to miss out on!! i am a sucker for stories that involve the entertainment industry 🥲
I finally re-read the series a couple years ago, I partially expected not to enjoy it as much since I'm an adult now. But I think I love it even more, it's something young teenager me appreciated and adult me now appreciates.
Books she mentioned in this vid.. 1.vicious 2.the broken earth (trilogy) 3. Angle fall 4. Six of crows 5. Radio silence 6. The gilded wolves 6. the picture of dorian gray 8. The night circus 9. The tao of pooh 10. The hunger games.
Dorian Gray was written during the Decadent era! So not romantic, but it was another period of literature that really cared about sentiments and feelings and exploring that using extremes, like extreme situations and extreme personalities. Also, it was a time in which the artists did sort of rebel against the canonical interpretation of how a man had to act in society (rich, capitalist, hard worker, interested in politics, imperialist) so they created male characters really in touch with their feelings (maybe a bit too much) and many sort of blurred the gender borders, and started exploring homosexual relationships in literature in a way that was disturbing to the society of the time
Also i think she has theh uncensored edition but i saw a girl reading the unsensored and saying that the homosexual romance was actually canon but i don't really remember. Wish i had her copy tho :')
As a fellow member of the hunger games defense squad, I think it's also sooo overlooked how well Suzanne Collins writes about trauma. Katniss suffers severe PTSD symptoms throughout all three books, which doesn't make her the perfect, strong, political figure that all the adults around her want her to be. But it's real. How else do you expect a 17 year old girl to react to surviving a death match and then being thrown head first into a revolutionary war?!?! I think that we saw a lot of poorly written examples of this during the 2010's YA dystopian explosion and sometimes forget how Katniss's trauma was so pervasive in the second and third books. Even the epilogue of Mockingjay alludes to the fact that the only way Katniss could have a "normal" future was with Peeta because they shared a desire to finally feel safe after all that they had been through. You are so right for having these books on your all-time favorite list!!!!

When it comes to speaking of The Picture of Dorian Gray, I think it's important to state that the portrait started to reflect Dorian's soul only after he wished for this portrait to age instead of him. I think this is crucial to understand the book well.

You'll finally talk me into reading the Gilded Wolves someday. I need to continue the Broken Earth, what I do is start a dozen series without finishing them first I can't pick favorites, I'm too indecisive lol. I'll think well is it really still my favorite, or have I just always SAID it's my favorite. I will say everyone should try War and Peace.
Oh yes, picking favourites is HAAARD. I'm will join you in the Hunger Games - Defenders AND Lovers camp. For the classics it would be the Lord of the Rings 🤪. And for humor I'll pick the "Three man in a boat" - never ceases to make me laugh. [the Six of Crows is great, but I'm not sure in would be my ALL TIME favourite] the rest recommendations of yours went straight to my TBR 😘 (except Jemisin. The first book was great, but after the intrigue was resolved it became tedious for me...)
I literally have a favourite section on my bookshelf. A few are here too, like Six of Crows and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Some shares the same authors, like The Starless Sea (Erin Morgenstern). And I am not going to bag on one of your favourites, but I am going to explain why I personally don't like the Gilded Wolves. I love the writing style of it, and I also love the beginning of that book. I thought it was an excellent introduction to the world and the characters and it was just amusing to read. In other words, it brought a lot of joy. But, like you said the characters don't really develop until the sequel (which I have not read, but I am happy to hear it for those that love these books), but for me, it wasn't just characters. It was across the board. I felt like the world wasn't developing, and the story also wasn't. I was getting frustrated because things were happening but it felt like the book wasn't moving forward. I was also getting frustrated because big things were happening to characters I cared about but it didn't come off as high stakes or emotional in any way, and that is just is a real letdown. I like it when my books punch me emotionally. As I said I loved the beginning and the writing and I can understand why people love this book, but the lack of development did ruin it for me. But The Gilded Wolves would make a stunning adaption and it would transfer very smoothly to screen.
I haven’t read too many books to know my all time faves but within the last 2 years I’ve reaaaally loved The Memory Police and The Song of Achilles. Such moving and touching stories for me.
The way you gush about all these books is awesome. Makes me really want to read the ones I haven’t. I think my top 3 books would be Percy Jackson, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and Six of Crows.
All I can say is that my favourite book of all time is War and Peace and I got it when I was 13 and I am now 48 please stay safe and enjoy your reading love your Australia fan John ❤️❤️❤️
@@i-3562 Exactly!! I just absolutely love it and I wish it would never end, I can't get enough of it! Everything about it is so brilliant and especially the old peculiar photos added, top notch! It deserves more hype
Ooohh, favourites... okay, people seem to be as hesitant as I am, so not one, but three: The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett The Book thief by Marcus Zusak I mean... there are more, but those just came to mind immediately (also some of my favourites are in Russian, and I'm not even sure they are translated. One surely is, but the others...)
@@greixysosa9117 sure! I absolutely love "Monday starts on Saturday" by brothers Strugatsky, it's kinda magical realism, and it's brilliant and hilarious, and also extremely smart. In fact, all of their books are good, but this one is lighthearted as well. I try to come up with something that is surely translated, but not a classic, and it's really hard! I'll think about it a bit more)
Based on your excitement of The Gilded Wolves I would highly recommend The Gentlemen Bastards series beginning with The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Heist, found family and not terribly defined magic system. So good!
what i love about VE schwab is how diverse each of her series are from each other, there's always a VE schwab story for everyone (i may not have been crazy about Vicious or Addie LaRue but I adored the Shades of Magic series it's my current favorite)
I just started reading The Night Circus! So far... I really love it. You actually recommended this book in one of your previous videos and that made me buy it! 😂 Thank you for yet another great video!
Some of my favourites are Circe, Convenience store woman, Soulful simplicity, The starless sea and Magic cleaning. I do have The fifth season at home, can‘t wait to read it 😊
Out of all the books you’ve mentioned, I’ve read Convenience store woman, it was good, but it left me a little unsettled, are rest of your favourites similar in the feeling? (I’m just curious and looking for my August read)
I haven’t read that many books, having only really got into reading early this year. But I’ve gotta say my faves are Six of Crows, priory of the orange tree & the invisible life of Addie Larue. I loved reading all three of them so so much...recommend them to everyone 🤍 And for priory, if you’re put off by the size...don’t be😂 it’s an amazing book that is just *chefs kiss* Also love how one of your faves is The gilded Wolves series...I don’t see it that often and I loved it (Kinda disappointed by the ending though🥴)
The perfect duology for academic rivals to enemies is the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss!!!! It’s such a big part of the story and it was sooo entertaining
The Hunger Games is definitely one of my favourites of all time. I've reread that series countless times now. The Picture of Dorian Gray is definitely a classic I want to read one day. Definitely want to read The Fifth Season this year! 🖤
I just love the way you talk about the books that you love!! The metaphors that you come up with and the energy that you exude always wonderfully encapsulate the experience of reading each book. You're a true champion and cheerleader of the books you love, and it's amazing!! :)
I'm reading The Night Circus right now, and I'm really enjoying it. But it does not even compare to how much I loved The Starless Sea last year. That book is amazing. As fellow booktuber Clockwork Reader has described it, it is a story about stories, and for people who love stories. The most magical experience, I really recommend it for anyone who enjoyed The Night Circus.
im literally rereading the hunger games trilogy right now and its SO GOOD. so underrated as a political commentary and should be considered as more than just a silly love triangle book
Leonie! You should read The Mysterious Benedict Society. It's a middle grade book but I think its still fun, especially if you like found family and riddles and things.
My current favorite book series are The Folk of The Air series by Holly Black and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas I just really love Jude and Cardan and the world building in ToG is 😘👌 **chef's kiss** I think these will be long term favorites, since I've already read them both three times this year and enjoyed every moment lol
You really made me excited to read The Silvered Serpents, because what was slightly disappointing to me when I read The Gilded Wolves is the lack of character development so excited to see what the author did in the sequel!!!!
I love the entirety of The Raven Cycle Series, but honestly, I think I enjoyed the spin of series The Dreamer Trilogy even more. The last book hasn't been releasen yet but i abseloutly adore it so far, especially the first book in the Series, Call Down the Hawk. (Maybe I'm just a sucker for the edgelord that is Ronan Lynch, and the Lynch brothers in general, but who's to say? Lol)
OMG WHAT ARE U, MY SOULMATE??!?!? The Hunger Games AND THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY IN THE SAME LIST?? NEVER have I ever seen these books on anyone's faves' list TOGETHER! Read Six of Crows duology (but I'm only in love with Crooked Kingdom) Also - I have The Gilded Wolves and The Night Circus on my shelves (need to read them ASAP, I guess). You are my lost sister - I know that now!
I want to read the Broken Earth now, thank you Leonie. Sounds like something really cool. And it's something modern as well. I am mostly after books written before 2000. It just happened that books that interest me most of all were written back then. But I have space for 21st century books too.
@11:23 your summary of Fallen Angel sounded so amazing and passionate, I immediately found and bought the Kindle copy (for £0.99), only to realise I already had it on my shelf from a past YA book festival haul (and still have on my TBR). 😅 You’ve reawakened my initial interest in this book though, so I want to finally read it before the end of this year 😊
More people need to be talking about ANGELFALL! Ahh! That series is INSANE! Along with the Blood of Eden series and The Hunt series! Top tier YA dystopian!
I loved your thoughts about the Hunger Games! When I read the books, it's exactly the social commentary that I loved (to be honest, it was one of the first 1st-person-PoV books I ever read and I figured out it's not really my thing). It's honestly my gateway into dystopian stories and the way media and propaganda were portrayed was brilliant and haunting. I loved your take on it being a dystopia through a teenager's eyes too! I hadn't thought about that before ❤️ (Just wanted to leave a recommendation about a dystopia I loved too - "War with the Newts" by Karel Čapek. He's a Czech author who died before WW2, so it's so interesting to see how he imagines the future from that particular point in time. I thought it was very thorough in the way it showed the range of human reactions to something foreign and unknown, and it was so gripping to read - I read it for uni in two days and couldn't talk about anything else for a week, so highly recommend that one ☺️
Love this selection! So glad someone else found Susan Ee because I feel like Angelfall was a bit different from the typical YA with it's gore and 'normal' main character.
I SOOO agree about the Hunger Games! It's so deep under this first layer of basic teen story, same for the recently published prequel, although I know some people would disagree.
my personal all-time-fav book has to be Mistborn - The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. While I wouldn't put any other book from the series on that list, the first has an extremely special place in my heart. It was the first adult/epic fantasy book I've read and I was just blown away by the details, the amazing characters, the great heist-plot,... Vin was the first (and to this day only) female character which felt like I could identify with her on so many levels. It nearly felt like a self-insert - just that I didn't write it haha
I, too, will defend the hunger games until the end of time. [the Six of Crows is great, but I'm not sure in would be my ALL TIME favourite]
the rest recommendations of yours went straight to my TBR 😘 (except Jemisin. The first book was great, but after the intrigue was resolved it became tedious for me...)
For my classic, I would also choose Lord of the Rings! I think my comedic choice would be Mort by Terry Pratchett
But The Gilded Wolves would make a stunning adaption and it would transfer very smoothly to screen.
jane eyre, six of crows, anna karenina, percy jackson, and a room with a view are some of my all time faves!!
Yes!! I loved seeing you talk about the hunger games bc i agree! that’s definitely one of my favorite series and I love hearing you defend it LOL
I haven’t read too many books to know my all time faves but within the last 2 years I’ve reaaaally loved The Memory Police and The Song of Achilles. Such moving and touching stories for me.
already adding them to my tbr!!
The way you gush about all these books is awesome. Makes me really want to read the ones I haven’t. I think my top 3 books would be Percy Jackson, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and Six of Crows.
simon vs the homo sapiens agenda is one of the few books I can reread endlessly without getting tired of it
All I can say is that my favourite book of all time is War and Peace and I got it when I was 13 and I am now 48 please stay safe and enjoy your reading love your Australia fan John ❤️❤️❤️
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs is a must read! It's literally my all-time favorite
MPHFPC definitly needs more hype. The story is so good and well written! The concept is really original and I just loved it.
@@i-3562 Exactly!! I just absolutely love it and I wish it would never end, I can't get enough of it! Everything about it is so brilliant and especially the old peculiar photos added, top notch! It deserves more hype
Ooohh, favourites... okay, people seem to be as hesitant as I am, so not one, but three:
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
The Book thief by Marcus Zusak
I mean... there are more, but those just came to mind immediately (also some of my favourites are in Russian, and I'm not even sure they are translated. One surely is, but the others...)
Can you mention some of those favorite Russian books please?
@@greixysosa9117 sure! I absolutely love "Monday starts on Saturday" by brothers Strugatsky, it's kinda magical realism, and it's brilliant and hilarious, and also extremely smart. In fact, all of their books are good, but this one is lighthearted as well. I try to come up with something that is surely translated, but not a classic, and it's really hard! I'll think about it a bit more)
i just bought vicious and vengeful today! Can't wait to read, hope i love it as much as you!
So happy you mentioned six of crows, the gilded wolves, the night circus and the hunger games!! Some of my all times faves too :).
Based on your excitement of The Gilded Wolves I would highly recommend The Gentlemen Bastards series beginning with The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Heist, found family and not terribly defined magic system. So good!
If you like morally grey characters you should try “The blade itself” by Joe Abercrombie. It has one of the best characters I’ve ever read :)
Romanticism tends to feature idealized circumstances and larger-than-life heroes. And of course, a happy ending.
what i love about VE schwab is how diverse each of her series are from each other, there's always a VE schwab story for everyone (i may not have been crazy about Vicious or Addie LaRue but I adored the Shades of Magic series it's my current favorite)
I was so surprised to see the Angelfall! It has been so many years yet it still gives me feelings :')
“You’re just 31 Hank” 🥲🥲🥲🥲 crying as a 90’s boy going on 30 loving books^^
they way your eyes match the color of the fifth season cover are so beautiful😍
I just started reading The Night Circus! So far... I really love it. You actually recommended this book in one of your previous videos and that made me buy it! 😂 Thank you for yet another great video!
The Night Circus is really really magical and atmospheric. You described it perfectly as "mesmerizing" :)
I loved reading all three of them so so much...recommend them to everyone 🤍
And for priory, if you’re put off by the size...don’t be😂 it’s an amazing book that is just *chefs kiss*
Also love how one of your faves is The gilded Wolves series...I don’t see it that often and I loved it
(Kinda disappointed by the ending though🥴)
The perfect duology for academic rivals to enemies is the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss!!!! It’s such a big part of the story and it was sooo entertaining
Six of Crows is definitely one of my favorite books of all time as well
The Hunger Games is definitely one of my favourites of all time.
ahh this comment warms my heart!
I was so happy to see Angelfall here 💗
THE WAY I ACTUALLY DANCED WHEN YOU BROUGHT OUT BROKEN EARTH- My favorite series!! So underrated. Thank you for talking about it!
I'm reading The Night Circus right now, and I'm really enjoying it. But it does not even compare to how much I loved The Starless Sea last year. That book is amazing. As fellow booktuber Clockwork Reader has described it, it is a story about stories, and for people who love stories. The most magical experience, I really recommend it for anyone who enjoyed The Night Circus.
radio silence is amazing!! i kept on waiting for some romance but it’s the best that she wrote it that way
Omg I’m so glad you mentioned Angel Fall- the nostalgia 😍
I screamed when you said Angelfall and you described really well why i love is so much
im literally rereading the hunger games trilogy right now and its SO GOOD. so underrated as a political commentary and should be considered as more than just a silly love triangle book
Ok she would absolutely love the show Death Note like that first book review said it all
Leonie! You should read The Mysterious Benedict Society. It's a middle grade book but I think its still fun, especially if you like found family and riddles and things.
My current favorite book series are The Folk of The Air series by Holly Black and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
I just really love Jude and Cardan and the world building in ToG is 😘👌 **chef's kiss**
I think these will be long term favorites, since I've already read them both three times this year and enjoyed every moment lol
The thumbnail Looks SOO good!!
Picture of Dorian Grey is one of my all time favorites too! The writing is so gorgeous and lyrical.
Broken Earth is very high in my list too! I don't usually like rereading books, but I've read those three times. Absolutely love them
You really made me excited to read The Silvered Serpents, because what was slightly disappointing to me when I read The Gilded Wolves is the lack of character development so excited to see what the author did in the sequel!!!!
Love how the Fifth Season cover matches your eyes!
the way hardly anyone talks about VICIOUS??? IT IS SO GOOD....and ofcrs my beloved Six Of Crows
Oh wow I like your taste, I feel like I need to read these now, also huge fan of the Hunger Games as well.
I am right there with you with the Broken Earth series! It is probably my favorite series and I want everyone to read it!
A few of my favorites are Forget Tomorrow, Beautiful Creatures, and every book written by Natasha Preston

Leonie :*talks about quarantine in 2020*
Also Leonie : Good times, good times
The best way to describe The Night Circus is it's a love letter. The only other book I've run into "like" it is The Ten Thousand Doors of January.
31 year old who read these books in college here - I agree 💯 with your analysis of the books and I also will defend them
when you brought you HG defense hat, i picked up my HG defense hoodie to help. Just so you know you're not alone, etc
Wait but your earrings are so cuteeee!!!
I hadn't thought about that before ❤️
(Just wanted to leave a recommendation about a dystopia I loved too - "War with the Newts" by Karel Čapek.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻at your Defense of the Hunger Games!!
Love this selection! So glad someone else found Susan Ee because I feel like Angelfall was a bit different from the typical YA with it's gore and 'normal' main character.
the way you talked about vicious, you'd probably love death note. check it out.
I SOOO agree about the Hunger Games! It's so deep under this first layer of basic teen story, same for the recently published prequel, although I know some people would disagree.
angelfall it’s my favorite definitely, I reread it last year and I fell in love again, it’s really good
WOW we have a very similar taste in books. I was so happy someone mentioned the broken earth trilogy hahaha
my personal all-time-fav book has to be Mistborn - The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson.
