It's never Sarah Brightman singing. It's Emmy Rossum, the actress playing Christine.
This movie will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you so much for watching it! Fun fact: Emmy Rossum was only 16 years old when cast in the role of Christine Daae and turned 17 during filming! She was opera trained since the age of 7, and yes, this is her real singing voice!
The raising of the chandelier and the overture is still one of my favorite cinematic moments. Let the light wash away darkness.
I remember seeing the movie previews and that scene was one of the ones that really sold it.
One of my favourite things about this film is Minnie Driver (who played Carlotta) singing the lovely credits song. She isn’t operatically trained and Carlotta does some pretty intense vocal acrobatics, so the filmmakers had a trained opera singer dub her. But as Minnie is still a great singer, they had her sing the credits song 🥰
Gerard Butler, was perfect. He puts so much emotions to all the songs. Him singing alone to the monkey as tears roll down his face is so emotional & hard breaking to watch, I cry every time I see that scene. I have seen the Broadway show twice & the Phantoms in those shows never moved me to tears as Gerard Butler Phantom did. He is perfect as the Phantom!!
Agreed. He doesn't have a broadway-level voice but he's good looking, knows how to act and more importantly, interpreted the song better than most of the broadway male leads
The photo of Christine's father is Ramin karimloo that was the phantom in the 25th. And the music when Christine is going to see her father at the cemetery is Moonless Sky from sequel Love Never Dies.
I bought the 2cd movie score after watching this back then, girl. It was serious. These songs are phenomenal. Emmy Rossum ate these UP!
17:40 This scene where the phantom appear on top of the staircase, I don't know if you noticed, but he is dressed as the red death from "The Mask of the Red Death", by Edgar Allan Poe. It's one of his most interesting tales and in the year of 1964, the story was adapted for the cinema with Vincent Price in the lead role as Prince Prospero.
Oh, I wished that rules and regulations about how much you can hear and see before copywrite infringement occurs did not exist. Reactions nowadays are like chopped liver, but you have to do the best you can. I have the dvd to this and it is one of my all-time favorites. Andrew Lloyd Webber-GENIUS. And this movie musical-SUBLIME. I remember hearing about the Masquerade part years ago and how people were blown away. It intrigued me even more. Thank you for the reaction. I know you did what you could. Time for me to play catch up.
🌹💗💗🌹
Lmao you said, "I think I know this lip!" 😂
Michael Crawford is extraordinary. He was the first of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantoms. Sarah Brightman was his Christine! Love this show! Erik learned early as a young child to use his extraordinary voice to manipulate people especially women ( his mom and Christine most notably) and his voice entranced them and illicited emotion responses. He entranced her and you are right it was manipulative. But he knew he could never get any woman to love him because of his disfigurement. It never occurred to him the manipulation was evil and would never make him happy because it's the only way he ever got anything approaching decent treatment as he grew up abused by the world. He needed a woman to freely love him. Christine was capable of that but Erik, in this story, didn't give her the chance. He ruined his own best hope. It was in the sequel "Love Never Dies" he learns the lesson, but at an event greater cost than he paid in this first part. Many people hate the sequel. I do not. I think you would love it. There is exceptional music in it too! And it's worth watching to see the beautiful resolution to Erik's tragic story. It's tragic but also redemptive! That's what makes it the right ending for this story. The ending of this movie set you up for the sequel. I hope you'll react to it. It's a live show recorded in Australia and is beautiful and a wholly appropriate end to the story.
“Clearly, Madadme Giry, genius has turned to madness.”
The Phantom: “Madness…THIS IS OPERA!!!” *** Kicks Raul into a well.***
If your hand is at the level of your eye, you cannot be strangled with a noose
This was the first version of Phantom of the Opera that I seen, Gerard’s and Emmy’s voices in it are just… wow. They put so much passion into their roles. I then saw the music video of Phantom of the Opera with Sarah Brightman (the original Christine), and I think the original phantom was Michael Crawford, I thought the video was weird
Just found out it was Steve Harley in the music video, not Michael Crawford lol
First off you are sweet to think that Emmy's voice is like Sara's that is a real compliment to the actress herself honostly and yes she has been singing Operah since she was a little girl. When they asked her to do this part she had never heard of the play and was just fresh off the set of the movie The Day After Tomorrow but they played her some of the songs and she fell in love with the music so she agreed to do the movie. Yes it was really her singing and Gerard as well,he had never done operah before and so they trianed his voice to be like he is in this movie. Now to clear things up in the beginning it was Christine's friend Meg that was at the auction not her mother that is why Raoul is older than she is..they just used the same actress haha. Honostly I never knew Patrick could sing before seeing him as the role of Raoul here and I think he even has his own band not sure about that. This was the role that got Emmy on the map so to speak and she even went on to making some music discs. I actually own one of them though she doesn't sing Operah there more like pop but still. This is my favorite play and I saw it at least 10 times or so growing up because it was playing in a theater near my house in Toronto. To this day I still think that Rebecca Caine and Colm Wilkinson who were my first interduction to The Phantom and Christine are the best of them even though I love Sara's voice and Emmy's as well but I don't know just something about Rebecca and Colm makes me smile everytime I hear the range their voices have. Miranda Richardson who plays Meg's mother singing was a shock to me because I had no idea she could sing like that. I love the songs in this one so much and find myself singing them every now and again. Grate reaction as always.
I have been loving the musical reactions that you have been doing! I have seen Phantom live on the stage 3 times now and it will always have a special place in my heart. Seeing as you have done a few musicals to movie adaptations now I would love to recommend Matilda the Musical as definitely worth a watch!
I hope that you can also react to the 25th anniversary pro shot. It’s my favorite version of this story. other than the original silent film.
Thanks, Kemi! 🕯 I love this movie as well as the stage production it was based upon. I am fortunate to have seen a touring Broadway company of it once.
This was my introduction to Phantom, so it will always have a place in my heart. I think the sets, lighting, and costuming were perfect for the movie. However, since watching the 25th Anniversary it's so hard not to compare the two musically. For example, growing up I was always bored during "The Music of the Night" in the movie. Not to say that Butler wasn't giving his all. His singing just never emotionally struck me. But watching Ramin Karimloo's version finally made me understand why Christine was so enchanted with his voice. Because I was too! I think he was able to bring the emotions, like Butler, while also keeping to a sound that I enjoyed.
I know it's really personal preference, but I like the richness and piercing quality to Karimloo's voice. It always stands out to me compared to phantoms that are softer/polished and Butler's rougher, yet whispery, voice.
Also, with the stage version, I am able to appreciate the music a bit more: from the instruments to the repeated motifs and melodies. However, I will say that I enjoy the extended version of the music when Christine is going to the cemetery in the movie! It’s gorgeous.
We are spoiled, I think, to have two movie versions. Especially for those of us who never got to see it live.
It was fun to revisit this movie with you! You're the first youtube film reactor I've actually subscribed to ❤. I know patrons take precedence, but I will still throw my 2cent recommendation out there in case a patron ever recommends it: The Secret Garden (1993). It is one of my favorites, and it is, although somber, very beautiful.
-Blake 🙏
Oh thank you thank you. It’s been my favorite movie. I hope someone reacts of this movie. And you did wonderful of it. So thank you thank you
That’s not Sarah Brightman singing. It’s Emmy Rossum, the actress who plays Christine in this movie. I believe she was 16-17 years old when she was filming
The beginning transition actually wasn't going from the past into the present.. It was the present going into the past, but I'm sure you figure that out as you go 😊♥️♥️
Can you react to "The Raggedy Man?" It's a movie from 1981 which takes place in the second world war if I'm not mistaken. Eric Roberts is part of the cast and he was still handsome at the time.
Synopsis:
A woman raises her two children alone in rural Texas during World War II. Everyone in town criticizes her, but her life is transformed when a young sailor decides to stay with the entire family.
Love this movie so much, the movie is everything...the singing!!!
Hi I’m glad you’re watching Phantom of the opera. I actually got a wild story to tell about this movie last year. My movie theater across the street was showing the movie sing-a-long. Before the movie started they reminded us feel free to sing. So I was singing and the lady watching next to me told me quit singing. ??? And the usher told me quit singing. 🤔I was thinking I’m going to sit in silence after the movie I’m getting a refund I came to sing. But remembered I have this movie at home so I walked out and got my money back and a formal apology from manager that I was in the right.
Have you watched Tommy J (Johansson) from Sweden singing both parts of the song "The Phantom Of The Opera" in his video. He did an amazing job of it. Apart from his incredible vocal range, he also plays the keyboard and guitar. I showed his video to my sister, and she agreed that he's amazing. But she did fear for his long blonde hair and all of the candles he used in that video. He used a castle for the video. Well there are plenty of them in Europe where he lives. He's in a band. When he's not touring he makes videos.
One of my favorite movies ever, great reaction!
You much complete the phantom story Watch Love Never Dies
Christine's father in this is Ramin Karimloo from the Phantom 25 Anniversary you Watched
This COULD have been such a great movie. But they got a Phantom who's not a good singer and a mediocre actor, and they made Raoul look like a bigger dope than the musical does, which I didn't think was possible. But Emmy Rossum killed this role, and there were some individual set pieces that were good.
WHich one of you told her Sarah Brightman was singing as Christine?
The Phantom needs an Uncle Iroh 😢 poor guy is scarred and needs his advice. (IYKYK)
If you thought this was good you simply HAVE to watch the 25th anniversary. The best phantom and the opera cast to date.
Watch the 1943 Phantom Of The Opera film! It’s really good too! 😊😊
Please please please react to Nightwish's cover of the Phantom of the Opera (offivial live 2005 version from Helsinki with over 60 million views) it is absolutely amazing, and it is reported to be Andrew Lloyd Webber's favourite rendition of his song
Yes!
this is my fav movie ever
OMG My first crush was the Phantom.
Ohhhh I pray that you can react to "Moulin Rouge" at some point 🙏❤️! You will love it so much.
OMG my favorite musical of all time!! The book by Gaston Leroux is one of my favorite novels of all time. My mom took her high school students to see it at the Ahmunson Theater in LA and they loved it. 🥰 I read the book when I was 10 and was so moved by it. Andrew Lloyd Webber is such a genius. I so need these costumes Christine is wearing in my life! ❤️❤️🌹
Gerard Butler did a phenomenal job I thought. Scottish actor playing the phantom. His acting was outstanding! Some nitpicked on his singing but he made it his own. All of these actors/actresses are doing their own singing. He was 34 when he did this and Emmy Rossum playing Christine was about 18 when it came out and 17 when filming started I believe. Her and Patrick Wilson who played Raoul in this were both singers. Patrick had done Broadway before and definitely was incredible IMO.
The “Point of No Return/Don Juan Triumphant scene was my favorite scene of this movie and so erotic lol 😂 It was different as compared to the Broadway version but I liked this version of the scene better. Gerard played one sexy and irresistible Phantom. Gerard wanted to make sure Emmy was comfortable at all times and she said how professional he was. A perfect gentleman.
Emmy was just stunning 🤩 her voice very angelic and how I would imagine Christine. The opening transition of when she sings “Think Of Me,” in that gown and the stars crystals in her hair was absolutely ethereal and beautiful.
All actors committed and I was crying after it ended. It’s timeless and enduring.
The Masquerade Scene was wow. Christine’s dress was different than the Broadway version. I’m torn because I love both. Emmy’s body is incredible and I wish I looked as good in those outfits as she does. What a figure!
My favorite time period was this era the 1880s.
The Opera House was a set they built that was inspired by the real Paris Opera House. My friends I graduated high school with have been there and it’s absolutely breathtaking in terms of architecture.
Hugh Jackman and John Travolta were both approached for the role of the Phantom at this time but declined due to projects interfering and Anne Hathaway was approached for Christine but she was filming Princess Diaries 2 at the time.
Love this channel and sorry for the long comment but I just love this musical. I know every word.
I always felt sorry for the Phantom. Deep down he was someone who wanted love and wanted to be loved 🥰 when people are shown no compassion this is how they act. He saw in Christine someone pure of heart and innocent. She possesses qualities that few have in this world. Christine respected him for being her “teacher,” and they both shared a love for music.
Loved the last scene of the movie!! Absolutely amazing!! 🤩 I could really feel their pain. Phantom loved Christine so much and she loves him too in another way but Raoul is the one she wants to be with. ❤️ This movie/musical is really about forgiveness, love, and accepting those that might look different.
Enjoy the movie! ❤️❤️ love to you from my mom and I in So. Cal USA 🇺🇸 and love to all from wherever you are! ❤️
I dare you to watch Love Never Dies now.
My dear please react to Hilda Hurricane ;)
Nice adaptation of the story but doesn’t hold a candle to the 25th anniversary performance.
I kind of wish the stop using ”hollywood stars” doing live action musical movies and use trained musical perforners instead.
They have a certain way of express all emotion in their voice while the former usually overact and just try to sing well.
But I guess it’s a way to reach out to new audiences.
100% what I was thinking as well
@ulricaandrae4381 I see your point but honestly they all committed ❤️❤️ I was so caught up in the stories and the acting that I tuned everything else out. Every time I see it it makes me cry 😢 ❤️❤️ Emmy is just stunning in this! ❤️❤️
I completely agree. I'm not a fan of the singing in this movie at all.
Completely agree. Emmy did decently but Patrick was the one who REALLY brought the vocals.
I totally disagree. To me is the opposite, the trained musical performers are to robotic, there is no feeling to there performances, to them is all about hitting that perfect note, I have seen the Broadway show & it did not move me in any sentimental way. As for Gerard Butler, he may not be perfect (to you), but he puts so much emotion to all the songs, him singing alone to the monkey, as tears roll down his face was so hard breaking to watch. I shed tears every time I see it. NO trained musical Phantom performer will ever duplicate or come close to what Gerard Butler did in that scene, NEVER!! To me he was PERFECT as the phantom!!
Gerard Butler's mediocre singing does kinda take me out, but all in all a decent rendition of Phantom of the Opera.
Absolutely, I couldn't stand how mediocre some parts of the movie's renditions were compared to the CS or live theatre versions I've seen in London (or even the badass Nightwish's rock version of it)
Really glad that somw many people have found the Phantom from via this movie, but not a fan of how short it falls from the real deal 🙄
@Songfugel Gerard nailed the acting and his voice he made it his own. I enjoyed this film and could watch it anytime ❤️❤️ Emmy and Patrick are awesome 👏 as well ❤️
@LordVolkov yes many say that but for me I was so caught up in his acting that I didn’t even notice. He nailed it ❤️ IMO
