Will a BMX work on mountain bike trails? Sorta.

- Today we're at Virginia Key park to answer a question-one we kind of already know the answer to; Can you ride a BMX bike on mountain bike trails?
I mean, you probably could. They’re great for jumping over stuff and nearly indestructible. But then again, you could probably go hiking in tap dancing shoes.
BMX bikes come in many shapes and sizes, but at your local skatepark you’d find something like this. The tires are high pressure, the seat is super low, and the brakes are...well there are none. We’re also missing the pegs but I don’t think that's a factor here.
For our test course I chose a loop at Virginia Key Park called Purple Haze. All of the trails here are named after rock songs, and just like the song, Purple Haze takes only about 3 minutes. You’ll see why that’s important. I also like this loop because it has a little bit of everything, from loose sand, to roots, to chunky rocks and wooden obstacles. There are also some well packed berms which I’m sure the BMX will work great on. There are no prolonged climbs or descents, nor would I want there to be. BMX gearing is made for short sprints, to set up for gaps and jumps.
As you can see, my mountain bike makes quick work of all these features. Pedaling through the sand and dirt is effortless on big cushy tires. On bigger bumps and drops, the suspension helps keep the bike grounded. Even if I get going too fast, hydraulic disc brakes are at my fingertips. The experience on a mountain bike is fun, comfortable, and fast.
But we didn’t come here to use the right tool for the job, this is Seth’s Bike Hacks you’re watching. Time to take the 20 inch for a spin, balls out no brakes.
Right off the bat, I could feel the bike bouncing and shifting around on the pebbles and sand, but on the berms and wooden features it was a blast. The BMX was so snappy and nimble that it outperformed the mountain bike that was following me. That ended really fast when I hit this little section of mushy dirty. Sand, gravel, and rough terrain is crippling on a BMX. On inclines, I was able to pedal hard and use my momentum, but there's no way I could have done any real climbing on this bike.
I was very surprised at how well the BMX handled the rock garden, but then again it was down a small hill. If it were level or uphill I wouldn’t have had the gearing or clearance for pedaling. For the roughest of features, momentum is the only way to get through on a BMX.
As I worked my way through the trail, I became totally exhausted. In places where a mountain bike would just coast through, I was pedaling with all my might. On a BMX you’re always out of the saddle mashing as hard as you can.
Bombing this little twisty section was scary. I just barely made it around this turn without tumbling into the bushes. After one more chattery section I was nearing the end of the loop. The BMX had made it through the course. But believe me when I say you can’t do this for very long.
After catching my breath, I thought it would be a good idea to take another lap. Filled with confidence, I was going faster than I did the first time around. That could have been much worse.
I made it through this twisty section the first time, but on round two my luck changed. Even if the bike had brakes, I’m not sure how well the tires would have gripped the surface while stopping. No matter how you slice it, washing out or losing control is a really big possibility on a BMX. I’ll be feeling that one for about a week.
The whole reason I did this test is that people actually do ask about this. If all you have is a BMX and you’re curious about mountain biking, you might want to wait until you can do it on a mountain bike. Either that, or find some dirt trails that are made with BMX in mind. Mountain biking on a BMX has a really bad fun to danger ratio, so I just can’t recommend it. Thanks for riding with me today and I’ll see you next time. - Спорт
I road BMX bikes my whole childhood, and laughed at the thought of a tire size larger than 20, or having gears lol. I road my BMX to and from work, every day, which was about a 1.5 mile ride.
Had no clue mountain biking was as serious as it was, and then heard about some local trails (ended up being 5 minutes from my house, one of the best trail systems in the state). and I took my BMX bike there. For MONTHS, I would go there 2 or 3 times a week with my BMX bike and give it my all. Doing 10, even 15 miles of trails in a single day on that bmx bike. Both me, and the bike, were pretty much indestructible lol.
I would get silly looks, but no one ever approached me about it. Until finally some older dude that looked like a stuck up roadie on a mtb (full spandex outfit, skinny arms, probably weighed 130lbs soaking wet), came to talk ask me what I was doing. He scoffed and asked me if I was going to ride the beginner trails, and it really rubbed me the wrong way. Although he did convince me to save up and buy a mountain bike, that dude was an elitist jerk lol. I was just a young kid that was getting it, any way that I could.
Any who, I miss those times when I was invincible on my lil bmx bike. Now I get injured just thinking about riding it.
i really appreciate ur coment
lol, i did the same. my mtb got stolen so i just used my BMX to trail ride with the buddies. nowadays i like using my roadbike with smooth tires on trails, it's even more fun haha.
I had a BMX, it was a Raleigh Burner, it probably got the name from the ridiculous weight, so I had legs like tree trunks as a kid. I once tried to ride the 4 miles to a friends house with another friend, but turned around with half a mile to go when I saw the steep hill I would have to ride back up as I was already exhausted and covered in sweat.
@Brandon Traviss the weirder thing is people that brake going downhill and lose the speed that would take them halfway up the next hill.
Lol I love that lesser lifeforms always have to hate in order to try to cope with their own inadequacy fueled insecurities. He was butthurt that you were killing it, like raisin brained rich shitbags who hate on people with much less expensive but much faster cars than theirs.
Back in the day way before mountain bikes . That's how we rolled . I did it for years .
same and i prefer a lil 20" smaller, lighter, and funner
@@jobirdjohnson3136 id say that if they didn't have carbon 29s but im over 6 foot so i outgrew the old dirt pusher.
@@JohnClarkGaming Longer tope tube and a 20inch should feel comfortable
@Shadxw Aviation we bow to your intellect.
Actually funner is a comparative adjective. Real word. Cry more.
My son is 7, so I take the BMX on all our rides. It’s a great equalizer and I get a heck of a workout. Oftentimes forced to pick up the bike and run up hills and other terrain. I love it! It’s all just exercise and there’s no sense in crushing him on a mountain bike and spending the whole day waiting and not even spending time together.
I did the same when my kids were little. Trained the kids to jump off and hold the brake when they couldn’t climb anymore. I would carry my bmx up the rest of the hill, then run back and carry his/ hers up. And we were ready to go again at the top. Not as capable as the mountain bike, but way more fun with the kids.
the mental imagine of a grown man with a BMX on his shoulders, clambering up an incline while his son effortlessly rides away into tomorrow

@DragonGenix is that a pun?

I remember when I was about 14, before I ever owned a mountain bike, my friends and I would bomb through local trails on our BMX bikes. We would wedge our shoes between the seat post and the rear tire to slow down cause we didn't have brakes either lol. That was very dangerous, but lots of fun.

Yeah! Back then, I justhave BMX. No brakes. Me and my cousin would just use our slippers as breaks 😂

Mark Huigen I read you comments right when that happened 😂

My bmx has chunky tires, and a rear brake. I can practically ride it anywhere.
Just like you can hike a mountain in tapdance shoes

One of my favorite things to do while growing up in VA was to ride MTB trails on my BMX. It was always fun to watch the Mountain Bike guys scratch their heads when we would outclimb them with no gears, no suspension, and no brakes. Still do it in my 40s, only occasionally I’ll pull out the DJ and do the same thing.
You know what they had in the 80's... BMX bikes with brakes on them.
I mean u could put gyro on it
@@deprezzed9657 or just use brakes and just barspin and then opposing barspin

Lee Gibson guess what they still do
Yeah, just because the local kids want to look like pro's and ride with no brakes, doesn't mean you have too. Plus, I would call that a street or freestyle bike as the tires are really only designed for the road. Get a good or oldskool BMX Race bike and it would be much easier.. and more fun I think.
I also drove bmx on purple haze once. Never been in virginia keys tho

yall realize how many shoes i went through i went to school with holes in my shoe cuz of bmx lmao
Worth it
Same with skateboarding
I've been trail riding on my bmx for a while, it really builds your quads being on a fixed gear and all
If you put brakes on the bike, would the fun to danger ratio become better?
+Luke Hill oh for sure... dirt tires would help too.

curious as to why you did not use dirt tyres and breaks, i mean both these things come standard on many a bmx
rim brake would help a bunch on that kind of mini-trail...but BMX on that trail is just plain not fun haha. Dirt Jumper bike no problem.
dirt jumper would be fun
I would love to see this on a 24” bmx with a rear break

You should do a video on riding a mtb in the skate park
He already do Some type of video
It's been done, mtb do fine
i did it it was not very good at all
Thats easy
Mtb can be all around
can you ride a racebike on a mtb trail?
if you want to break the poor thing.
check a video of yoann barelli
Yes but that wasn't the question haha, somebody do it! :D
I used to ride a bmx race bike on MTB trails all the time. It was good for everything except climbing and gnarly rock gardens.
if you want to brake the super carbon lightweight poor thing
Hey Seth I have an idea, lol you mentioned that the bike was nice and nimble, but slowed down on the really mountain parts. So why don you add off road tires, gears and some disk brakes, and see if there is a difference? Yea it would totally be a Frankenstein bike but so worth it to watch.
Cheers man and keep on having a blast.
I don’t know if there are 20” wheels with disc brakes, or hubs that would accept discs on 20” wheels. At that point, it’s pretty much just a rigid mountain bike with smaller tires and bmx geometry. I would expect it’d be like downsizing a dirt jumper (with no suspension), it would probably perform decently (if the rider had the skill) but it would be extremely rough and rigid on any trail with rock features. The smaller tires and size might make it easier to accelerate and throw around though.
i dont understand that.. like you are saying turn a bmx into a crude mountain bike which would completely defeat the question...
@@wumbobo Disk brakes a pretty normal on bmx race side of things. + some knobby tires and letting a little air out....you get use to single gear pedaling and pick trails fun/accordingly. + nothing beats a light responsive bike over a squishy mtb with all that suspension and bulk. imo
This suggestion sounds dumb. Might as well just ride a kids mtb bike.
thats not a BMX anymore , just buy a kids size mountain bike
I learn a lot from your videos. Keep up the good work bro!
i love this because this is how I started riding in the first place lol we had a few downhill runs. it was so rough but also alot of fun because of how challenging it was to our little group. we all got really good at riding anything else after mastering stuff similar to this but with alot more jump's.
When I was 15 I could have done all this stuff except for the rock section I probably would not have wanted to go down. Back in the day I would have knobbys on the front and a snake belly on the rear. And I learned how to get thru sand pretty well, but would have had the same problems with getting up the hills as you did. Back then it looks like BMX bikes had different gearing. If I remember correctly, I had 44T on the front and I think it was a 16T freewheel on the back. Or maybe 17T. Anyway, I used to ride my bike on motorcycle trails, or at least I tried to. Was lots of fun. Now I'm just a road biker lol.
This video is hilarious, @seth. Not you getting hurt, but the burning those legs up those inclines hahaha. Good stuff.
This is awesome. Seth, I am glad you are trying these things, so I don't have to find out for myself.
I have taken my BMX on an off road ride for over 42km. It was a joy to have brakes and I reduced the tire pressure too. Obviously it was not great for hills 😁

LOL, Love riding my brakeless bmx down the mountains in AZ. You should see the looks on hikers faces when i come up to blind turns yelling no brakes dragging my foot on the ground. They move quick.

You need to try the NRA Pit in Usery, that'll be fun

Haha I loved riding my bmx with no brakes jumping off the cwu colleges 2 story wheelchair ramps, every time it'd end up with the campus officer chasing us and end up having to stop otherwise they'd flip their carts on the ledges haha. Its fun running 170mm cranks with 25-9 ratio, less pedaling but a little more straining uphills
Thx a lot dude
Appreciate the sacrifices
need a version 2 of this vid, with bmx brakes and decent tires tho
for real homeboy has bald ass tires no brakes, and left his quads at home that day, clearly this man has never gone up steep ass hills on a bmx bike lmfao
I don’t know about anyone else but I always do BMX on mountain bike trails. I tried a big mountain bike for the first time a few weeks ago (been riding the same BMX for a few years) and I absolutely loved the mountain bike more than my BMX mostly because I’m a beginner rider. I’m just a kid.
Thank u for this comment. I'm here trying to figure out whether to get a Mountain bike or a BMX for my beginner rider kid on our rural property which has no flat or smooth surfaces. I felt like Mountain bike was the way to go but this is a huge investment for us and really important to my son, so I want to be sure.
Next week on Seth's Bike Hacks, can you clean out a live toaster with a metal knife?

Hey Seth! Just wanted to say that I MTB all the time with MY SE Everyday! It’s not as fun, but still; I got my SE a few months after you reviewed it, so it’s the same model and everything. Just discovered this channel. You're like the Linus of bikes. Instead of GPUs, you just drop yourself. Impressed, intimidated. Subscribing.
I used a pk ripper on mountain bike trails and its stiff but it works very well for the sharp turns and stuff
I could beat everyone behind me because it's so fast but not for long because it can't switch gears
SE has the full size versions of their signature BMX bikes. One is called the OM-Duro, which has multiple gears on the rear. Pretty slick set up.
Where I'm from I have no MTB trails
I ride downhill trails on my OM Flyer 26 inch cruiser from time to time.
Also speaking of the new 2017 OM-Duro go check the video of Todd Lyons riding mammoth mountain on his.
Pretty sure it's on the SE Bikes Facebook page.

How about dirt jump bikes?
Nah, those are used for flat downhill to sudden flat dirt jumps thats all... dirt jumpers are just for smooth dirt jumps.
Dirt jump Bikes are great for mountain biking if you like to jump roots and stuff, I loved riding trails on my Dirt jumper.
i used mine numerous times on mountain bike trails, I have a Norco jump bike and always ahead of the lads, rides a bit rough but it works, lol.

Damn seth. Way to go all out with no brakes! Thanks for putting yourself at risk for our entertainment. Stay safe brother
I would like to see how this bike would do with an internally geared hub, disc brakes, and singletrack-worthy tires. Almost like a rigid weekend warrior type of bike that you could throw the street tires on if you wanted.
With no ground clearance it wouldn't make it far on real trails.
Mtb bike park trails are designed for speed so a bmx could ride them. In the real world, the lack of gears and clearance would be a huge prob.
you think a 24inch bnx with breaks would be any better?
I live in Florida RIGHT next to a huge mile MTB trail. You hit it on the nail with everything about a BMX on said trail but I will admit my trails are nothing like yours. Very small hills, narrow winedy paths, all kinds of tree beaches sticking out the ground. Much different style but I can't get over the fun I have on a 20" Bmx Bike. Truly is the most fun I have had on any size bike in that trail. The work it takes and thrill is un matched. Passing a MTB feels pretty good too.
SETH! I Stumbled upon this video and love it! Huge fan of now "Berm PeaK".

Your the one who inspired me to get back into the mtb world after quitting for years because my first hardtail bike (ironhorse) was stolen after saving for months which discouraged me enough to say fuck all that. But a couple days ago I found a bought a bike in the same day and I'm in love with it, im on it every chance I get and think about riding it when I'm not with it lol, but it's your carefree have fun and be wild attitude that helped me realize I've been depriving myself of so much fun for no reason! Hope we cross paths one day seth, you are the shit man what you do is incredible, thank you for all your hard work 👌👍🤘

At one point in time I used to ride a BMX bike on desert trails, rocks, rocks, rocks. I also used to ride a 24" DK General Lee that I added a front brake to and put some 2.4 Maxxis Holy Rollers on. I used to race dirt track bmx, and I used my bike for everything, INCLUDING mtb trails. I usually ended up having to slow down for my friends on their MTB. Especially when it came to areas in which we had to pick our bikes up and carry them.
When I finally got a MTB a few years ago, it just made it easier for me to pedal but I honestly think I had more fun on my BMX since I didn't have all the derailleurs and disc brakes and crap to worry about breaking, and trying to find schrader tubes, etc. I spend as much time on maintenance with this hardtail as I do riding. I think the most I ever had to do with my BMX was oil the chain.
Fewer parts = Fewer things to break :P

Alright. Now I want to see you go shred it up at a skate/bmx park! Would be awesome content!
0:36 what about the gearing on the BMX bike. I see that you have a bike with the standard BMX beer coaster-size sprocket. What about the BMX bikes that I see sometimes they have the DVD size sprocket. is that better for longer distance because the sprocket is closer to the size like a mountain bike or whatever?
Can you ride a mountain bike on BMX trails?
Yes... As long as your local skate park(apparently also known as "bmx trails", I'm actually going to start calling it that) allows MTB, which mine does not. Also I'm mainly a MTBer, so I only recently bought a bmx
