Why is Whistler Bike Park such a big freaking deal?

  • In a recent poll, it seems that 78% of you have never been to a lift access bike park like Whistler, which is actually pretty unsurprising. Some of these places are not easy to get to, and some of you aren't even that interested in downhill. Nevertheless, "Whistler" pops up a lot in MTB news as well as UA-cam, and most of this content presumes you have certain knowledge about the place.
Some of you may feel that you have "stupid" questions about it, but I feel that no such questions exist.
This video is meant to serve as an introduction to Whistler so that other videos are easier to understand. If this upload isn't up to normal standards, it's because I produced it on location.

Whistler's a tourist vacation spot even if you dont mountain bike or ski. Probably was result of looking up vacation spots or something. The amount of stuff there for tourism is crazy. The Olympics were there too, so the had to add alot of entertainment.

Nothing was more freeing than flying down a trail on 2 wheels, wind in your hair/helmet and dirt in your teeth. Now I miss it just as much as I miss walking. I love the memories these vids bring back. I hope you still make the most of the life we have left & enjoy every day. Nothing but best wishes man.

ALWAYS check the frame for cracks, large dents or torsion affected carbon fibre.
Check the wheel alignments and spoke tension all around each wheel
Bring a chain checker to check the wear on the chain
Inspect all cogs for wear (cassette and front cogs)
Check forks by bouncing, is the pumping smooth or does it get stuck or release faster through one section of travel? If so, scrap it, good forks are so expensive to repair or replace.
Check dropper post (if fitted) and ensure it slides well
Check for traces of chain lube and fork grease and other lubes as if they are not present, and/or the chain is rusty, it is a sign of maltreatment and lack of car, so the bike will be compromised.
Make sure that the pedals and steerer rotate freely,
Test ride the bike and listen for noises from the BB when you crank the pedals. Any noises are a bad sign and good BB's are expensive to replace.
Check all gears and brakes, listening for out of place noises, although, it is always a good idea to replace brakepads anyway just for safety's sake.
Make sure the gear triggers, dropper post controls and brake leavers work well and are comfortable, although they can be changed and adjusted at little cost.
Is the saddle comfortable as this will ruin your rides and saddles are not cheap.
Check any carbon parts (cranks, handlebars, etc.) for cracks, dents or signs of stress from age or accidents. Carbon is expensive to replace and is not repairable.
Are the tyres in good shape, look for tyre bead damage and is there good tread. Are the tyres well aligned. Misalignments is again a sign of bad treatment, although it is not hard to fix (deflate, reposition, and re-inflate).
Check that all bolts are tight (bring tools) and that any pivots (full sus) work smoothly.
Look for wear on parts like pedals and handlebar grips, although this should not be a deciding factor, as they can be replaced easily and cheaply, but should give you a good idea of the general condition and mileage/age of the bike in general.
Finally check it is comfortable for you, and that you are happy with the brand and suspension type, and make sure that it really is the bike you want.
Do full research on any bike type you look into, reading reviews and suchlike.
After you have done this, and have bought a bike, take it IMMEDIATELY to a bike shop for a safety check before you ride it hard.
      Good luck!

I eventually got a lift all the way to the front door of the YHA on the other side of the lake. It was July 1985. Mountain biking was just starting out. For 2 weeks, I would take one of the YHA canoes across the lake to the village and hire a mtn bike for the day and ride the local trails. Back then there was no bike park or hardcore trails down the ski slopes. It was more following the cross country ski trails around the village. It was an awesome introduction and I've been mtn biking ever since.

I went to Vancouver for a vacation back in June of 2017. The drive up to Whistler is stunning and there is nothing I could even come close to comparing it to. The mountains and cities its self are something unreal to someone coming from the flat Midwest. We ended up making the drive up twice.

I second this, I'm from AK, drove up from Seattle in the Fall - I firmly believe British Columbia in the Fall is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Driving through BC I experienced continual astonishment that the leaves on all the trees had such a vibrant shade of orange because it just doesn't look that way in the photos - and here in AK, when the leaves turn orange, they're more peach or salmon colored, and they are not bright, but rather dull and dreary. I've been to many places around the world but I never encountered a place I considered more stunning than Alaska until I drove through British Columbia.
