  • In this episode follow me a as I do a variety of work in a property following an emergency call out in last week's video.
I've come back to install some new sockets, external lights and change some switches and sockets.
I'm also joined by my old apprentice Adil for a couple of days on the job. You can watch me as I supervise him doing testing and some other bits.

Delroy, if only all Apprentices can have a boss like you. Too many Sparkys don't invest time in their College kids. They are too quick to explain, show, shout and get pissed off with these youngsters.

I’ve got 2 apprentices and my electricians get paid to do their jobs, one of their jobs is to help the apprentices be good electricians and they enjoy teaching them , they get paid by the hour so it’s my businesses profit that is paying to teach them not the employed electricians profit . So technically they do get paid for it .

Journeyman Electrician (25) years here from United States! Cheers! I love watching these videos , you guys do things so much different than we do here in the States. Love your laugh, and stories! I love the way you communicate with your Apprentice, your actually teaching instead of ordering. Bravo on the job! A lot of people , even some Electricians have no idea what it takes to run wire and make installs cleanly in homes that are already finished. There’s an art to it with minimal holes to get wiring even from a ceiling light to down a wall to a switch. You really have to know the anatomy of a house and how they are built. Good job my brother Electrician it’s always refreshing to see skill and talent in the trades still. All of these new guys just want to rush through it no matter what the damage created. Your a true surgeon! Cheers from USA

Got 2 years on my belt, still learning, that part where you said we work on cleanly done up houses, couldn’t be more correct, nothing compared to actually having to wire/ or rewire through a house, I was going to ask how he got his Romex through from the outside to the room, fist tape is an option but it only does so much when you can’t even get your arm anywhere close.

Wireless switch eliminates the trunking and damaging the coving. Also with the pendant feed a batten through the ceiling hole bit of cable tied round and pull down on the batten to get a fixing its only 6inch pendant.

HI, i had a similar issue, the electrician cut some timber strip say 20cm long and 10cm wide, poked it through the hole and applied liquid nails to each end, then placed it so that is is a strip over the centre ( almost )
The liquid nails at each end dried in 10/15 mins and he was able to remount it in the original space so no paint or plaster work was needed and like you mentioned it is a small not heavy light fitting - probably 100-150 grams
Yes the wifi or wireless switch would have been good in this case - my wife was very pedantic and insisted on flush mount so it was necessary to drill through the noggins to pass the wiring - it was 2 hours additional work and the longest drill bits i have ever seen
      Regards

Del, take a look at plunge saws. It makes cutting floorboards tidier and more accurate (just run slightly away from nails). I had a plumber in my house and he borrowed mine to cut a board that was in an awkward space. He was so impressed he borrowed it and used it on another job in the afternoon. Mine was about £40 (LIDL). Not a pro tool but for the few times you'd use it, it'll last.

    Hi
I enjoy watching this videos in Australia
Good to see the 220-240v is alive in other countries
You have good patience and teaching skills with apprentice, i dont want to talk him down but i treat them like children, in that i mean, tech them right, dont overload them , take your time, and encourage feedback and confirm what they know before moving on to other skills
When they explain the theory why they do a procedure and then the practical then you know they have learnt
I like your closing comments, it is easy to make a mistake, and it will hapen, but you learn from mistakes and if you follow your self check procedure you will find them and fix them before disaster strikes
PS i had similar issue with a fluro strip style led light that sits under the carport, it took reading the instructions ( which i took a photo of and copied to my email ) to set the light sensitivity (for day / night but it will work on dark cloudy daytime ) / motion detector sensitivity - except the cat trips it if she walks between the cars or jumps up on to a bonnet / roof
    Regards
    George

Presumably that existing switch is in studwall? I think I would have found the existing wires to the hall light switch, attached a draw rope, and pulled the 3 core down to the existing switch position. Then put in a triple switch, and not require any trunking.

    • @hbarnes2489
      @hbarnes2489 4 роки тому +2

No I most likely wasn't stud wall houses of that time tended not to have stud wall downstairs. They would often not have any stud walls at all but depending on the upstairs layout it's not uncommon to find the landing wall would be a lath and plaster wall.

Domestic electrical installations/maintenance seem so boring sometimes. I'm an electrician too but most almost all of my short career has been spent in factories doing troubleshooting and maintenance on industrial machinery. I nearly went this route but I'm happy I didn't. Obviously we sometimes too have to install sockets and lights etc. There's definitely some things I could learn about domestic wiring. I'd also like to know what the weird large tester was doing? I'm happy I found this channel as domestic wiring is something I would like more exposure to.
