I agree so much with your review. It also bothered me that Rebecca 2020 advertised that it is closer to the novel than the 1940 version. That is simply not true! The only thing that was more true to the novel was the murder. They changed tons of other things that were so distracting, like having Maxim go to jail and the Lily James character sneaking into the doctor’s office to play Nancy Drew. Also the horseback riding with Jack Favel was totally strange and unwarranted. The second Mrs. de Winter would never have done that.
Even Lily James was not true to the book. She was much too self assured and not timid and shy. She fessed up to breaking the vase pretty quickly while Joan Fontaine in the 1940 version stayed very true to the character’s nature.

I totally agree, the 1940 version did justice to many of the core scenes and themes in the novel in a far better way. I'd prefer it over this botched up mess of a movie any day!

I haven’t read the book or seen any productions but from this review I think I’ll stick to the book! Why does the movie industry consistently think they have to “pretty up” characters? 🙄

I totally agree, it's odd to make them pretty when it takes away from the portrayal of the character. 😶

Yes, yes, yes! I love the book but that movie was very underwhelming. Also, great review of the movie, I wasn’t happy with Armie Hammer but Lily James was ok. I should watch the older movie though!

Totally haha. Thank you 🙏 I hated them both, I hope Lily James stops getting roles and wasting everyone's time and money. Totally the old one is so nice 😊

I love the book but the trailer of Netflix vibe didn't look so great.
