Galapogas! Truly, your psychic powers are strong. Just yesterday I was looking for a good video on turns and found none I liked. So thank you for this. Incidentally, I play the first line of Song for my Father as a warm-up each day because I find its series of turns very challenging to do consistently.
Greatly appreciate your clear and detailed explanation and demo, Jeremy. I have wondered about turns but did not know where to find the answers. Now I do (and it’s not in the Galápagos, thank goodness!) Adam
Gallops on gas 🤣 Your channel is a gold mine Jeremy. I'm still doing unit 1 of fundamentals book 1, and the drone exercise would benefit massively from some of the information you share here. Will start adding (tastefully hopefully!) turns to some of my lines. As part of dedicating 2023 to trying to take my beginner jazz chops to the next level, I also fished out a 1001 Jazz Licks book I bought not long after starting to play 3 years ago, and am using that to complement your material. Slow and steady wins the race, or at the very least means I'll enjoy the journey more and am more likely to stick with it.
Hi Jeremy. Bought Fundamentals Book 1 & 2. They are excellent. Making big leaps day by day. Thank you. Question: what program are you using to notate on? I have Paperless Music app which is very good but this looks like it might be good also. Also, Galopogus….😊
Thank you! Heard these many times and never known exactly how to do them. Just ran through a few tunes adding in a turn at every downward interval and now I can. Now, what's the name of that Kurt Vonnegut novel about how basically people are too clever?
Of course, it depends on your skill sets and goals, but I usually say once you can play a simple Bach invention or Chopin Prelude, you will have enough skills to get started.
Thank you, Jeremy. Nice to hear the diff btw. straight and swung, btw. triplets and sixteenths. Subtle, but important. Mucho Thanxo!!!🌹🌹🌹🌹 Great discussion. Yodeling la la la flopagos Galapagos. La la la yodalapagos Galapagos.😎
What would help is some acoustic treatment for the room, and bringing the mic closer to his voice. And then the piano needs the mic to be further way, because it clips often (the distortion you can hear on many of the notes). I'll leave a specific concise comment with unsolicited suggestions (everyone's favorite kind!) under a new video after he returns from his honeymoon, if the room sound seems to be still a work in progress at that point. I'm going to watch either way (and assume most people would), so it's not like the biggest deal. Maybe that could be a motivation for US - hey, the paid lessons are mic'd nicer! Either way, I let the ads run on mute while typing this, hoping that gets tallied in, but who knows.
@@grigoridj Ha! It's been that time for quite a long time already. I'm actually here as part of my somewhat feeble attempt, so far, to NOT revolutionize bebop, at least for a few bars at a time, before I get lazy again and go back to doing WTF for the rest of the session🤣

This guy should write a book or something 😆

Your lessons are so great! So much valuable information you are giving, thanks

Good for you! Good luck and I’m glad this is helpful, Vegas kid!
Awesome video! This was super helpful in a piece I am writing for a competition:)
Great! Good luck in the competition. Give me a shout-out in your acceptance speech if you win? 😉
Galapagos. Super helpful way to spice up any tune.

Falafel - You asked for the comment! Thanks! Helpful1
Many thanks! Thanks for watching, Jane!

Helpful. Thanks! Galapagos :)
Yay! I'm glad you galapagos'ed, Anne. 😉
I bought your book a little early. But I heard so many great things about you as a teacher. About when should a pianist begin jazz?

@@JeremySiskind thank you very much! I'll keep this in mind

hi Jeremy thanks, a good video could please improve the volume of your voice it is very low a sheek mic would be better

Great lesson as aways Jeremy! Where do I add the turn to Galapogas?
Gall apo gosh!
It took my a second! 😂
Great lesson! I know turns on descending lines are the most common, but can't you just use a note below for a turn on an ascending line?
Galapagos
I guess so? It just doesn’t sound like much to me and I don’t notice musicians doing that.
@@JeremySiskind well, guess it's finally time to revolutionise bebop!

BTW I'm not teasing you, I'm completely serious, despite my tone...
Maybe the rhythm at 7:04 could be a triplet eighth, two triplet sixteenths, then another triplet eighth?
Galapagos. Hope you get a good turnout for this video. Seriously, very helpful!
Galapagos. Now I won't be over using the word galapagos, but I will probably be over using Turns for a week or so.
Galapagos!
