This reminds me of my teachers from middle school that started a band, They would play on the local level, It was just sad, They were middle aged and already looked beaten down by life. The dude with the bald head and beard is the only guy on that stage that I would even believe is in a band.
You can make good money playing bars though when you're older. I don't know, the idea that musicians are supposed to be young and exciting is why we don't have good music anymore.
I came in to say this! You gotta have a lot of stage presence and be known for weird syncopated movement like David Byrne is for moves like that to work
As a once-a-week-practice rock-cover band, we do it "just for fun" too. But at least we can play the correct chords together at the same time; which shouldn't be that hard if each person can at least read a piece of sheet music in their own handwriting.
Honestly, I feel James started going down hill when his super hyped AVGN movie bombed like Hiroshima! It should just be the original group and they should stick to what made him great, his rant videos!
the video definitely took a lot of his time away but i still think he made some good videos after that (his Earthbound review is probably my favorite video he's ever done). I don't understand why he feels the need to make all this extra crap on his channel. All the podcasts, movie reviews, rental store reviews... just stick to 1 or 2 things that you are good at instead of 12 things that are lackluster
James doing his marching dance on stage with the guitar reminds me of that episode of the office when Michael wears jeans and Pam says that he becomes a different person when he wears them
I know next to nothing on how to make music or start a band but even I agree this sounded more like a bunch of noise than a coherent song. Whatever James was doing (I assume the dinosaur or in the context of Rex Viper, the Yoshi) was funny and if was serious and not an attempt at comedy it just makes even funnier.

@@zachary_attackery They admitted to not rehearsing. They live all around the country/world. It basically comes down to this. James, wanted to do it, was able with the resources. He never did the band thing, he doesn't know that you normally would never have a gig like that, that quick, in that type of setting. You would normally p;ractice your ass off uintil you hate your songs before you get to that point and even then, you normally woud play to 10 people. BUt that aside, they weren't ready to play to 10 people let alone how ever many were at the show

I was in the audience, I was wearing the blue wig and red hat towards the left if facing the stage. I will admit that I only went because I was a big Jame Rolfe fan. It did get very difficult to not walk away from the show. Towards the second song onwards it did give off the "first band rehearsal vibe. The attempts to pump up the audience was extremely forced and I share your disdain for Silverman. I thought me being tired at 8:30-9 at night was why the music sounded off, but nope the underwhelming performance is what we had.
oh wow so i far i think you're one of the only people who actually saw then live comment on one of these videos.. I knew it wasn't just the cell-phone captured footage that made it bad lol
3:06. And THAT is why I will never sing in front of a live audience. I sympathize a little too much with their singer there. This is also why rehearsals are essential. Jesus.
Using your own fame for your band to succeed =/= using talent to succeed. They are not just having fun, they are coattailing their way to publicity by using the nerd as a means. And they use the cinemassacre platform to garner people to buy their products and merchandise... So no, this isn't just fun and games, this is part of a business strategy that has subpar quality and thus needs to be critizised. James could take a shit in people's faces and they would defend him, because admitting their nostalgic hero isn't what he was anymore shatters their own nostalgic memories of their childhood for some reason, and people would rather live in a delusional safespace... It's so bizarre. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
I was thinking the exact same thing dude. They fail to realize he is profiting off of being disingenuous especially since he's not writing anything and plagiarizing. It doesn't matter though, they will follow him to the end with their credit cards buying his merch and paying to see him. "Easier to fool someone than convince them they have been fooled" mark twain I believe..

Just posted some constructive comments on that video (from a perspective a fellow musician) and yeah it's pretty close to everything you covered in this video. After watching this I feel like in that I sounded a bit too optimistic.
For them to get the cheers they got for that trash is a slap in the face to us musicians who have practiced and played for years to even get anywhere but because of their fame elsewhere people give them more love then they deserve
If your music is good you shouldnt care and yes people were hyped and encouraging James because he is an og creator of this platform and a lot of fans so naturally people will want to see this happen.

Fun side story, I've seen Justin at a game convention, pax south 2020 and like he was walking around on the show floor and I musta been the only person to recognize who he was but still didnt approach him. He looked like a lost puppy haha
There was a video of Justin sleeping with a oxygen tank during his Silvermania era, everyone mocked him that he was dying while unaware that his sidekick took full control of his channel or telling him that he got the worse case of anorexia. It deserves an article on the lost media wiki tbh.
Funny thing is James constantly complain about having no time yet he has all the time in the world to practice Rex Viper. Really goes to show where his priorities lie nowadays.
Sorry that this comment is so long, but I am trying to explain my view without feeling like a snob hater armchair engineer. Disclaimer: all of this is my own personal "pro-hobbyist with around 70 gigs from metal to weddings and one recorded alternative-rock album on iTunes"-opinion. I started playing guitar at 11, I'm 37 now. I have two kids, as does the singer, as does the dummer. Our three-gigs-a-month period is long gone, but we do try to play live every now and then (like every two or three years now). I saw the video within the first hour when it was uploaded. I was excited, and my expectations were low. I knew they didn't have rehearsal room or stage experience. The guitars will be out of tune, the singer will be mediocre at best and somebody will freak out or start crying somewhere near the end of the set because of personal insufficiencies. :) I have met so many bands playing their first or second gig, it's kind of the rite of passage, to get that "bloodlust for becoming better". Singing well AND loud is not easy. Having consistent tone for four thrashing minutes is not easy. Even hearing the other musicians on stage can be tricky, especially when you just bring your garage setup to a wide, open stage - because simply you have no other gear than that. But all of those guys have a kinda big audience in the internet, with a high target audience ratio in the rows in front of them, so, if they have fun on the stage, it's going to be alright for everybody. RIGHT????? So.. The singer starts singing and my first thought was "Oh wow, he's gonna do the original line in original tuning? That's ambitious .. let's see how long the boys can keep it up". The singer was out of breath at the end of the first track and did not sing an alternative line but JUST F***'D RIGHT THROUGH IT (they never rehearsed the full setlist at full volume even once, because then he would know his limitations). MUCH worse than the production videos, which were, already lower tier, even in their genre "80s videogame dad rock". At the end of the concert, when he was screaming his guts out and trashing the microphone, I somehow read the body language as "Oh my god thanks this is over, now let's make sure I can't sing a single note after this - who needs an encore anyway, just break my voice and the mic and get the hell outta here". This performance somehow felt offending. Just run around the stage, waste all your energy unnerving the band members.. Like no F's given to anyone, not the art form, not your expectations, not the audience. The soloist didn't check for tuning before a long solo spot and JUST F***'D RIGHT THROUGH IT (you can always do some Tom Morello style whammy/pitchscrapy thing when a string breaks or the guitar goes extremely out of tune). Also, MUCH, MUCH worse than the production videos, which were, "good enough" as in "genre-compliant". James playing was alright somehow, sound-wise I think he does not know how to do a nice guitar sound (cross-checking with the production videos: .... yep, they don't). But those stage moves... did he lose a bet or something?! But he even finds amusement in it!?? Was he like too sober? Because "normal sober" people would not find that funny, and clearly he wasn't wasted on stage. Like where is that joke? James normally knows how to do jokes? The drummer and the synth were keeping it together for me, without them this gig would have been an even greater accident than it already was. The drummer is actually solid. Synth always live and let live by the sound engineer, but no "musicial" problems there. Regarding Justin, other people already told everything I can think of. Just remove him from the band, nobody misses him. Like NOBODY. @cinemassacre I dare you, set up a poll "Should Justin leave Rex Viper", and I'll eat my shorts if it's less than 95% of people against him. PROMISE, I will mince my shorts and incoporate them into a cooked meal and put a video of it online on UA-cam should I lose, in true AVGN tradition. I'll stop ranting now.
7:25 I was like... I dunno the bassist seems to be doing okay, completely forgetting I was meant to be listening to the guitar. For a good 10 seconds I was thinking "Man I would love to hear what's wrong here but that squeaking from somewhere out of view is so damn lou... oh"
I agree with most points beside the amp thing.. kind of annoying lugging around a Marshall half stack, a smaller combo is a lot easier and when mic'd up sounds significantly better.
The amount of people in the comment section saying stupid shit like their just having fun or Dorking around, as an excuse for their they're terrible performance need to realise that kissing their ass is going to make them worse and narrowed into the path of even more embarrassment, videos like this for example will save them from that fate if they're willing to listen before they embarrass themselves more then they already have. I know you people have forgotten the concept of tough love and constructive criticism because everyone is a spoil snowflake nowadays but videos like this are important because he wants them to get better at what they doing, and not embarrass themselves even further stop confusing being a hater with constructive criticism I am so sick and tired of that if you put yourself out there expect the punches to come flying from people who are going to know what they're talking, especially if you suck. If I was going to put something like this out into the world I would make 100% sure to practice my craft before I do I understand this is their first gig but the fact that they had months to prepare and only did this in 3-days before the live show is amateur as hell, they lucky that they are fans of the channel that showed up, if they were just random people they would have been laughed at or booed off the stage and even the fans are making memes about the band being mediocre there's literally UA-cam videos made taking the piss out of Rex viper especially Justin. that's why bands practice like hell even for their first gig because fear of being embarrassed is playing there head so they have to be shit hot and egos need to check out door especially. Which probably explains why the mixing on Rex viper music videos are bad. They were playing on stage like they were rehearsing when all of your mistakes are suppose to be made during rehearsal that's what rehearsals are for, but on stage you have to be shit hot no discussion. I know this sounds harsh towards a band that's just starting out but they're wanna keep doing what they doing it all starts if constructive feedback.
I just discovered this video. I would be interested to know the size of the venue and the PA equipment and sound guy? Not defending the band, but whoever the sound guy was also deserves blame IMO. I've been playing guitar for 24+ years and have a two piece act. Even then I am still looking for ways to improve and feel I still have a long way to go. I think, from all I've seen, that James is someone who likes music but has very little to no experience playing . In front of a crowd or otherwise. He is a limited player, which is ok, if you know how to play within those limitations. We all have them. Can a band rock out after just getting together for 3 days? It is possible but you have to be pretty high caliber musicians to do so. I know I couldn't. It takes a lot just to get on stage and play. I honestly do wish them luck and hope that they improve. James can't half ass shit like his newer videos. You want to have this rock band? You really have to put a ton of time and effort into it. Biggest mistake was recording, and making the album before the band was really a thing. Are they James hired gun? You said it perfectly. You can't automatically be a good musician who can hold a band together because you are a UA-cam celeb.
I saw the TMG show in person. I don’t think anyone was under the delusion that what we were hearing was “good”, at least not technically speaking. Still, listening to covers at 10pm after some of us had been drinking off and on for the day made this tolerable. I will say, I don’t know if it was the acoustics in the room or not but everything was so loud and running together that it sounded “ok.” Again, it wasn’t great by any stretch, but it sounded a hell of a lot better than the video they posted. I also totally agree that I can’t for the life of me understand how Justin fits into this. When he didn’t get off the stage I was floored.
So you’re gonna tell me that’s not true? I could name an endless amount of bands that sound incredible in the studio but complete garbage. And I’m sure you can name some too.
@@therattkage9413 with a project as new as James's band it would be a huge surprise if it was flawless right out the shop. This all isn't from lack of experience though all members have been in previous bands rescoring and mixing video game music. The lead singer is also in a band famous for turning a sega Genesis into a synthesizer and using it live. Our latest Impressions have been kind of awkward but nobody's been introduced correctly yet and it's a huge shame.
I like oldschool AVGN, Screwattack times and everything before I would say. Also his movie reviews, where only James is participating. Everyone, I mean everyone else (thanks god one of the worst, Mike is gone), yes even the cameos in the AVGN show like fucking Macaulay Culkin can stay away, all of them are not even remotely funny and ruining everything we loved about the show. James go back to your roots, (Dark Castle AVGN style), I beg you or this channel and your fan base will change drastically over the course of the next few years. If you really want to play in a band, go back to the drawing board, this Rex Viper shit is just cringe and awkward as fuck, and learn to play the guitar before stepping on stage, for real man. Great video sir.
Dude, his old shit was fucking terrible. It was just a guy stuttering and stumbling through his lines to find something funny. Once he polished up his act, got guys like Kyle and Mike involved and got enough experience to come up with creative lines and got more creative as a whole the quality went up.
I'm seeing a whole lot of "they're just having fun" comments on here and they are seriously pissing me off. I knew a guy who played in bands back in the 70s. When he wanted the band to perform, he would make sure that they were ready for prime time before then, meaning they practiced until they were ready to go onstage. If they weren't ready, they didn't go on. Keep in mind, these bands he were in were not mega-superstars playing arenas and making millions: these were bands that played in bars and made not a hell of a lot of money. Of course, back then you could make money performing in even the shittiest of bands, but that's beside the point. Rex Viper isn't even to the level of bar band. James and Cinemassacre want Rex Viper to be a thing. If they wanted to just do this for fun, they could just keep releasing the crummy videos on UA-cam like they have been. Instead, they paid money to appear live in front of an audience that also paid to see them (conventions cost money, after all), and they sound like amateur hour. Plus, it should also be mentioned that Rex Viper has a topic channel on UA-cam, meaning they must be signed to a record label, so of course they want this to be a thing. I think I even heard they are doing an album, but don't quote me on that. In short, the argument that Rex Viper is doing this "just for fun" and are above criticism is complete and utter bullshit.
ua-cam.com/video/CUt9haP1mw0/v-deo.html ^This video seems like it's using soundboard audio somehow, instead of phone audio. I watched the whole thing and it makes the mistakes so much more painful lol. At 32:50, the lead guitarist just gives up on playing the song completely

You can make good money playing bars though when you're older. I don't know, the idea that musicians are supposed to be young and exciting is why we don't have good music anymore.

I know next to nothing on how to make music or start a band but even I agree this sounded more like a bunch of noise than a coherent song.

"No rock star has ever done that move." - Everyone to Elvis
Very cool
7:25 I was like... I dunno the bassist seems to be doing okay, completely forgetting I was meant to be listening to the guitar. For a good 10 seconds I was thinking "Man I would love to hear what's wrong here but that squeaking from somewhere out of view is so damn lou... oh"
I agree with most points beside the amp thing.. kind of annoying lugging around a Marshall half stack, a smaller combo is a lot easier and when mic'd up sounds significantly better.
who needs to lug anything around when you have as much $$$ as James
I watched you on red cow so decided to come back and rewatch this. More of these reviews please!! Lol
I know you people have forgotten the concept of tough love and constructive criticism because everyone is a spoil snowflake nowadays
but videos like this are important because he wants them to get better at what they doing, and not embarrass themselves even further stop confusing being a hater with constructive criticism
I am so sick and tired of that
if you put yourself out there expect the punches to come flying from people who are going to know what they're talking, especially if you suck.
If I was going to put something like this out into the world I would make 100% sure to practice my craft before I do
I understand this is their first gig but the fact that they had months to prepare and only did this in 3-days before the live show is amateur as hell, they lucky that they are fans of the channel that showed up, if they were just random people they would have been laughed at or booed off the stage and even the fans are making memes about the band being mediocre there's literally UA-cam videos made taking the piss out of Rex viper especially Justin.
that's why bands practice like hell even for their first gig because fear of being embarrassed is playing there head so they have to be shit hot and egos need to check out door especially.
I thought the lead singer pointing the mic at the crowd was bad but when I saw that James Rolfe Guitar Walk, I fucking LOST it. 😂😂😂
There is no sound guy. That's the problem
Oh god that's worse than I ever imagined. Lol
yeah.. i didn't know what to expect when clicking on the video.. i thought it might be epic and awesome or pure shit.. looks like the latter

That lead guitar player makes me wanna learn to play just so I know I am better than him. That was horrible.
