REX VIPER ARE BACK!... and they're still not good...

- Whelp! The boys are back again! Bringing their garage-band quality nerd rock to the big stage yet again for the Too Many Games 2022 video game convention. All my problems from their first performance haven't really changed except them finally losing Justin. The lead guitar player is slightly better but still sloppy as hell. The vocalist was probably the biggest improvement.

In before James' simps flood every comment with "Let's see you do better!". You don't have to be a professional or even an amateur musician to recognize something sounds bad.
The worst part is James could find people with real talent to be in his band. There are thousands of insane musicians on UA-cam that live his stuff and would gladly play with him.
Also, he knows good musicians in Kyle and Bootsie…. Which makes this whole thing even worse
@@GregglyPuff Kyle retired have you been living under a rock?
It was never intended to be good.
It was a bucket list thing he did with his friends it's not that deep.
@@Ranuyasha Retired? He left because he was sick of not being paid for his contributions.

Yeah James is just a snake in the grass, uses the gofund me money for the movie to pay off his house. Yeah, in the words of James Rolfe, “what a piece of shit”.
Imagine James asking Kyle Justin to join and hes just like, "Maybe nah."
6:38 I think the singer was trying to get the audience to sing the guitar melody with the guitar. But, it just didn't work. James Hetfield from Metallica always does that, but he usually gives a sort of command, like a quick "COME ON!" before he does it, then it works. And this band needs to understand, you do sound check and tuning BEFORE the audience shows up. And go onstage, with that attitude of grabbing the audience by the throat, and going, "YOU'RE MINE FOR THE NEXT HOUR." Not with a sheepish, "We're uh...t-trying our best, we hope you like us! Heh..."
And that's fuckin annoying.
You can also get tuning pedals to kill your signal and keep tune between songs if for some reason you don't have a good set of tuners and a good nut for stability
It was the drummer who told Justin to stay off the stage because the audience thought they were using a drum machine.
Wet Diaper sucks with or without Justin
Oh holy crap I did NOT hear that one before, I feel like I'm really late to the party but I LOL'ed big time 😂
Haha

Same. Me and my band sucked ass but I still would say Rex viper would open for us.
James confuses liking music to a passion for music. When he did that podcast about their favorite bands it was so surface level.I think the singer is in a band called the cybertronic spree,a transformers themed version of Rex viper
I liked their Dare To Be Stupid cover
Rex Viper wishes they were The Protomen so badly.
Pretty raw that TMG went from having Bit Brigade, Protomen, Power Glove, etc to this.
You give of disappointed dad vibes at this point
this is honestly some of your best content. Doesnt have to be Rex Viper it could be any other bands. There's a lot of cringey clips of Motley Crue's newest tour. That may be a good follow up.

@@MoonsideResident he got kids. he don't have time.
“They’re just having fun” = “I’m giving them permission to keep being shit”
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for people starting bands and just having fun. Everyone starts out somewhere, and most people new in the performing world will be staring at their guitar’s neck while playing, awkwardly standing around like statues while playing, and asking for the engineer to change their monitor’s mix mid set. I did that a ton years ago when I first started. You have to play dozens and dozens of shows to learn how to look good on stage, it’s no easy thing to do.
But, at the same time, I was spending hours a day practicing guitar, studying music theory and songs to write better music, and watching tons of concerts of both big and small acts in order to see what professional musicians do while on stage in order to try and replicate it myself. It just seems to me that these guys don’t put that amount of commitment to getting at that level.
And I’m perfectly cool with it just being a hobby thing for fun, where they get together to have a good time and play a show once a year at some convention. But I’ve seen many acts over the years with more talent, passion, commitment to their craft, and better albums, and then never actually get any success at all aside from maybe 70 views on UA-cam and one or two monthly Spotify listeners. Rex Viper pulls in a few million views on YT just because they’re appealing to a niche retro gaming community and James is one of their guitarists, despite their music not being that good. That’s part of the entertainment business I guess, but it sure does suck.
Would love to see them practice more and upgrade their equipment from those tiny Line 6 Spiders or whatever to some better amps, and maybe study some concerts to see what professionals do on stage while playing. But somehow I have a feeling that whatever convention they play at in 2023 is gonna be the same stuff.
yep.. i mean at least they got the 300 pound elephant in the room off the stage.. my whole thing is, if you're charging money to perform you should be able to offer more than just ''hey that's the guy who does angry video game nerd" and some crappy mash-ups of 80's songs and video game music.
@@DancingwithGhosts I fully agree, there’s no reason Justin couldn’t have learned an instrument or something… The thing that bugs me the most is they could have been so good. The guitar solos especially just drive me mad. It sounds honestly like he just doesn’t practice or rehearse his parts.
I definitely wouldn’t pay money to see this, that’s for sure.
@@cygnus_XI me neither
@@DancingwithGhosts Also they NEED to play shows with better amps as you’ve said. I’m guilty of showing up to live venues 10 years ago with a shitty practice amp (or even just wanting to go direct with my bass). I’ve pissed off plenty of professional live sound engineers from doing this.
My family and friends would all tell me we sounded great, and I didn’t think anything of it. Until the front-house engineer at this bar-restaurant we played at told me bluntly that I was a pain to mix for because my 15-watt amp sounded tinny and weak, especially when cranked up so much. Told me it sounded like crud to say it nicely!
You’ve stated this in an older video but, it’s so important to have people willing to tell the honest truth. That’s why when I need serious opinions on my music, I show it to frenemies, people who don’t like me too much and will give their honest opinion no matter what.
@@cygnus_XI yeah our drummer is kind of a frenemy in that sense.. he's super critical of everyone including himself so if he said it was a good show i know it was a good show

"Tell me how they didn't have a proper soundcheck before the show started"
That's how these conventions are ran. I have been to many of them and at almost every one, the band has to go up, often set up their gear after the last guys, and spend 10-15 minutes doing sound check. I've seen it with almost every big VGM cover band.
Thanks for sharing your opinion, you’re a good guy and you have the right to share it and the thousands others, James needs a reality check I mean, it’s sad, James is an OG UA-cam guy reduced to this… I mean he made his money already and I don’t blame him that much really. Hi - they're bad and laughably sloppy for something with so much backing and stage stuff. Like, rather than getting your video backing tracks and stage lighting game down, learn to play the actual songs accurately

He has a very small band and he takes shots at people because he doesn't like their music and because he Likes to fat shame people literally he goes after people that are obese specifically on a daily basis just go look up at stuff you'll see. You shouldn't take this guy's opinion for anything especially once again his music and his band isn't even that big he has less than 30000 subscribers and subscribers and less than 10000 people know his band even exists until he stands on his soap Box and preaches about it you can't really find it anywhere unless he put it there himself the rage but if they're himself the radio has never played his music spotify spotify UA-cam all those places no one has once put his music on there themselves he always has to pay them to advertise it but there's other bands like arcane haven Who are sponsored by these people and I'd be willing to bet that if he listened to arcane haven he would probably think that they suck he would talk all this trash about them and it would be hilarious because those people in A-day make more money than he does in a year

Not defending James here but I've played so many shows, and been to so many international touring acts shows, and the idea that you get the perfect soundcheck before the live music is baffling to me. I've seen Dave Grohl holler for more bass in his monitor. That's a very common mistake at every single show I've been to, small and large.
Here's the thing, if these shows were a month apart, then I'd say "ok, they made some adjustments and might have hope", but a year apart, and like a 10% increase? No.
I'll even forgive them the sound check, because it's possible the venue didn't allocate the time for one. At least the drums sound tuned this time, and the singer has noticeably improved. Given that it's a room recording, it's going to be a strange mix of what's coming off stage, and what's through the PA, and with all that, it's still 90% lead guitar and drums again, which makes me think that's just the sound they're locking into.
I've heard so many bands that basically sound like a Guitar Center onstage. Where it sounds more like 5 guys all noodling around on instruments independently, than a cohesive band. There are so many things that cause that sound, including having guitarists who clearly don't play in similar ways, the mixes being off, the tempos not locked in...
If this was a dive bar with no cover, sure. But any venue over that, you need to step up. Having a montage of videos behind you can't be your crutch, nor can having a guitarist who's known for video game reviews.
If I looked like a Nick Kroll parody character of a 2006 whiny Journey’s employee, I’d be making bitter videos of successful people too. 👍
I'm waiting for Rex Viper to have their 'Sgt Pepper' phase. It should be quintuple album. That's right. FIVE OF EM!
The issue with Wët Dïper for me is that they try to do more than what they are capable of doing. Sure it isn't bad to go out of your comfort zone, but like you gotta walk before you can run. They try to go for this big arena-rock anthemic vibe covering Cheap Trick and Survivor when theyre just not talented enough for that. If anything, I can see them doing cover mashups of bands like Ramones or Misfits, going less for dynamics and more for in-your-face rock. Like uhhh I dunno, a mashup of "Astro Zomies" with Angel Island zone from Sonic? That shit would be the motherfuckin ass!
Another issue I have with Äss Wïper is that they're going mainly for 80s nostalgia, which I feel like just doesn't work in today's internet climate. It probably worked back in the 2000s and early 2010s when the Nerd was at its peak. But nowadays it's more about 90s and 2000s nostalgia, with modern gamers being nostalgic for PS1 and GameCube and not being alive yet when the NES or SNES were at their peak. I understand the band's gimmick is 80s cheese; I'm just saying they don't seem to have much of an audience reach outside of Bimmy being on the front cover and thumbnail.
its s cover band, you're overthinking this.
yeah you're probably right xD

The problem is that they all pretty much seem like beginners who have to go through all the beginner struggles and hang ups, but have forced themselves into positions that no beginner should be in because of James' notoriety.
Getting a new lead player would be a good start, but they really need to practice for a year or more and refine their skills a hell of a lot more before going onstage.

I'm not a music expert, and I'm also not defending James because he shadow banned me, but I don't really care if Rex Viper is bad. I think it's just a novelty. An extension of Cinemassacre. One of those things that people might only enjoy if they are fans of Cinemassacre. I feel like I'm done with Cinemassacre. I was a fan of AVGN back in the late 2000's because it was something new and unique. But it got stale over the past 5-8 years. I also don't like the fact that Cinemassacre shadow banned me for making a joke about Mike being aroused while sitting next to Macaulay Culkin. James uses filthy language on AVGN, so I think it's hypocrisy that he shadow banned me for my comment. I don't hate James. I'm just walking away. I have my own plans for a theatrical gaming channel that will blow away AVGN.

I’ve enjoyed your series of videos on Rex Viper and I agree with disliking the current group of bland guys, I mean I wish them well, but Kieran is basically a giant dork who thinks he’s really cool because he’s SLIGHTLY more wild than most of the total complete dorks that are in his life. I’m assuming that, lol. Like he’s probably the only guy in his group who has ever smoked pot for example, but then he proves himself a total immature dork at times like describing his childhood rental of Peter Pan, like wtf. Also I agree that Justin is a huge blob who is not needed. I think what it probably shows is that James is a solitary guy who has apparently lost his grip on the group around him, so he’s got these guys glommed onto him now, probably only because they are the biggest gloms. …However, I think your band criticism is fair, except that it’s not exactly a real band, lol. I I think James is still a genuine guy and he was practicing guitar, and the pseudo band was just based on that. I think his weird side stepping shuffle was probably just related to how he was feeling the rhythm of his guitar practice lol.
Which one is Justin?

hey man, u should do some video game covers. i think u and ur band could kill it (unless u have already, then my bad lol)
They ought to just try playing some of those songs Punk Style...
I respect them for doing what they can. All bands start off kinda ''meh'' , and most of us played shows before we were ready. After a few years of playing shows you look back and think ''damn...maybe we should have waited before going on stage'' but at the same time going out there and doing it gives great motivation to improve and practice more. You start small, then you headline the bills. Give them time. Now if they were egotistical and claiming they are superior musicians, that'd be different, but they seem quite humble and understand that they aren't at a professional level.
Yes they are
Subbed :D
The biggest problem with this band, is they're playing songs that are well known and liked, but not for the sound! It's all about the memories. Hearts on Fire is a good song but not because it rocks. It's a stupid song but it makes you think of Rocky IV. Mighty Wings or anything Game related is absolutely terrible. IT doesn't rock! It belongs in the filing of "embarrassing songs we like folder." But that isn't entirely true. August Burns Red does a cover of the Legend of Zelda and it is absolutely brilliant. They also do a Home Alone theme cover which is insanely heavy. The reason ABR can do this is because they're talented and can make anything stupid seem good. That is a rare gift. They're also an insanely skillful band that is debatably one of the most talented bands out there. They also don't exclusively make music that is from the 80's. You can listen to ABR do covers and say MEHHH but then listen to Invisible Enemy and say "Holy shit!" Which leads me to this. This 80's Hair Metal of Rex Viper is God awful. If you're gonna do a style for covers then don't do hair metal. It's just bland music that takes absolutely no skill in recreating. Taking something that is low tempar and make it HIGH tempar is the way to make it better and Rex Viper... just kind of clones the song entirely in feeling and atmosphere.
Normally I’m not a fan of fat shaming people. But when it comes to Justin, all bets are off. I had the misfortune of meeting him at one of these cons. Such an unbelievable asshole. He was at a merch table rifling through everything. He pretty much trashed it. And he had this attitude like he was an a-list celebrity
