- On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share the laziest way to water potted plants while away on vacation. If you own potted plants or a container garden, leaving home for extended periods can be stressful since potted plants can die if they go too long without water. This method is how I water my plants when I'm away from home.
The plant saucers featured in this video are 16 inches and 18 inches in diameter. The 16 inch plant saucers are excellent for standard plastic nursery containers up to 10 gallons. The 18 inch plant saucers work well for my 15 gallon plastic nursery containers. Dimensions do not apply to fabric grow bags, which are much wider than plastic nursery containers. Verify all dimensions before purchasing. The plant saucers and nursery containers I use are linked below.

This saucering and heavy drinking is also good for triple digit days. Some gardeners like to use kiddie pools as large saucers that can accommodate several planters.
I use these plant saucers for my potted fig trees in summer. They require a lot of water then. They're all dormant now, so the saucers are no longer needed. They actually must be removed to prevent the pots from sitting in water.
We have just been away for 16 days and it was so hot here in South Africa. I got a young school boy to water my garden and that worked great. I was so worried losing all my plants. I don't have many in pots but your Idea is perfect. Thanks for sharing.
Really great tip! Love to see your big prickly pear!pears! Loving your channel from Oklahoma!
Thanks for sharing!💜🙏🏼
Thanks for the great tips. Now you can enjoy your trip without the worry or bugging a neighbor to water.
enjoy your holiday!!
Thank you!
Great information! 😊👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video
You're welcome!
I ordered 4 fruit trees from Stan Mckenzie, thanks for recommending him.
You're welcome! Stan is great.
Hi, I watched your persimmon tree videos and wish to know if it is feasible to grow a Jiro persimmon tree in a 15 gal container in zone 7?Thanks.
Will it grow? Yes. I'm not sure how well it will fruit, though. A Jiro persimmon will grow in-ground in Zone 7 without an issue, especially Ichi ki kei jiro, which is the one I grow and recommend and is hardy to Zone 6. If you can plant it in-ground, I strongly recommend it. It is a dwarfing tree and can be maintained as a pretty small tree with annual pruning. Asian persimmon fruits are pretty large, so I'd be wary of how well it'll fruit in a container.
Thanks for posting. That's always been a problem for me with all my potted plants. I used grow bags this year for the first time, never again.
The grow bags, while supposedly great, dry so fast they are worthless to me here. Maybe if they were set in a pool of water, don't know.
Grow bags do dry out very quickly in the summer. The way to be successful using grow bags is to:
1. Use sizes much larger than you think you need.
2. Mulch them heavily. It makes a huge difference.
3. Run drip irrigation.
4. Use shade cloth in the summer.
I do all four of these things and I have no issues gardening in grow bags, and my summers are *very* hot.
There is a brand called Grassroots Living Soil pots, that have a plastic membrane on the inside with a 4” breathing space at the bottom. They are in Calif, where it’s really hot and dry in the summer, so “regular” grow bags are useless here, IMO. I’m in CA, and have been quite successful with this version of the grow bags.
@@gigihenderson8567 Thank you for the helpful comment. We did have the driest summer on record here. I may just line mine with some plastic next season. Thanks .
Your could just buy solar watering drip.
That would be expensive and complicated.
@@2MinuteGardenTipsIt costs under $100.
I'm so surprised you didn't put in a drip system while your away, OR use water bottles in the dirt ex: an olla they work awesomely. ❤ love your tips and information, you're AWESOME
it say the laziest method in the title I think the other method you mentioned takes more work to do that than buying some oil pans and put them with water. Hopes it helps why he didn't use those methods.
That would be complicated. I can't have a faucet on for days while I'm away. They leak like a sieve, so drip irrigation can never be used while I'm way on a vacation. In summer, I have to have a neighbor come over and manually turn it on due to the leaking issue. You'd have to have a professional system on a real timer, similar to a sprinkler system, to have that kind of confidence. I need something I don't have to worry about.
@@2MinuteGardenTips honestly TRY clay pots- it works extremely well and/or get water bottles, pinhole needle holes a bottom, fill with water, stick in dirt and wala!! it helps with NO evaportion as well, I love in an extreme hot climate, I have done both they - the bottles are cheap but work, the clay pot in dirt are awesome :) love your info
