An interesting thing about the word "commonwealth" is that it was originally a rough English translation of the Latin word for republic "res pubica", literally meaning "public thing". I've been waiting for this one. One cool thing to note was that the first recorded use of "Dominican" for the people of Santo Domingo was by King Felipe IV of Spain in 1625. And a correction in 5:17, it wasn't simply a reunification - the eastern side was actually invaded and conquered by Haiti until the Dominicans fought for independence. Aside from that, I'm glad to see a name explain on this.

Actually the official name “Commonwealth of Dominica” was chosen specifically to avoid as much confusion with the Dominican Republic as possible, I mean they weren't going to change their toponym so they needed to do something else once they became independent and a republic. It might be a nice connection to the Commonwealth of Nations which Dominica forms a part of, but the word “commonwealth” is a literal translation of the Latin _res publica_ (public thing or affair) which is where the word “republic” comes from.
Although it seems to have gained the meaning of “a territory with representative democracy”, because the word today forms part of the official name of places that have either a Republican form of government or Constitutional Monarchical government. For example:
    *Countries*
    Commonwealth of Australia
    Commonwealth of the Bahamas
    *Subdivisions/territories*
    Commonwealth of Kentucky
    Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
    Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
    Commonwealth of Virginia
    *Historically*
    Commonwealth of England
    Commonwealth of the Philippines
    Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

But to add, I am Dominican (DR) and I’ve read that the actual reason for the Name Republica Dominicana is because a group of Dominican Priests were left in charge of the island and the natives while the Spanish colonizers would go away, thus the island beginning to be called that (perhaps as a nickname or point of reference to refer to it) and getting its name. And also, the actual name for ppl from DR is Dominicano.. in Spanish, so u can say we actually do have different denonyms. As For the dominican Republic the name was not chose by Columbus it was chosen by the dominican forefathers:
The "Dominicos" were a christian order that brought education and fought for social justice in the island , so when the dominicans foreFathers were looking for a name they chose Dominican Republic, like saying: we are christians, but the Dominicos way, Meaning they stood for equality and academic development .

Yes, the DR could have been a totally different country if it wasn’t constantly invaded. Juan Pablo Duarte refused to be chosen president without an election first and he wanted a modern and prosperous nation like what he saw in France and the United States. Because we had to fight the invaders, we never had that election.

It's interesting because I'm guessing in America if someone says they are Dominican most people will assume they are from the Dominican Republic. However, in the UK there's hardly anyone from the Dominican Republic but there is a small community of people from Dominica. So if you were in England and said you were Dominican people would most likely think you were from Dominica.

It would be cool to see an alternate spelling like "Domese" to refer to the people of Dominica since most think of Hispaniola when hearing Dominican. Also Dominica is one of three nations to have purple on their national flag. I always pronounced the country's name like "Dah-muh-neeka" before watching this video just so people knew I was speaking of a different island.
