I am a 62 years old Vietnamese and I'll you about French language in Vietnam. Back in 1980 when I was in high school, there were 4 classes of grade 12 with English as an optional choice as a foreign language for high school students compared to only one 12 grade class with French as a foreign language. Reasons of why there has been such a large gap: 1. Mastering English language is a must for a scholarship in foreign universities. Beside USA, Canada, Australia many Asian universities South Korea, Taiwan, HongKong Singapore, Thailand offer scholarships and the language of instruction is English. 2. French colonialists didn't leave a positive perception in the heart of Vietnamese except their cuisine and architecture. As for me, English is a language of science and French is a language of literature and romantic music. Conversing in French with a lady is more elegant than English to my taste.
Crossing foreign streets: start, have an obvious destination, take an obvious path to that point, set a speed and hold it - dodge only when absolutely required and at latest possible. If you've sailed... Once the light is green - go, and you are the Stand On Vessel. Some advice I received in 1980 on my first trip abroad. Sound advice. The wisdom of sailors and pilots usually is.

Often I use the 'hope for the best' strategy.
