The water is so clear that it doesn't even look like you are underwater. The eels are surprisingly beautiful. The tour and info about the different fish was fun and informative, thank you and Gabby too.

As a scuba diver, goliath groupers can absolutely be dangerous. Their tail when they move fast or are spooked can knock your reg and mask right off without even touching you. Beautiful creatures but best to keep a reasonable distance. Great commentary as always :)

I’ve also been chased multiple times off reefs by moray eels. Known for taking fingers and chunks out of divers. Definitely not something you want to be holding your hand up to.

@@2009yz85racer you're absolutely right.. had a friend get a nasty bite from one while lobster diving in the keys. Clean cut straight down the middle of nearly the entire pointer finger and needed quite a few stitches if I recall correctly.

    • @eeee0101

Of course that one was a bit deserved, reaching into holes hoping to fish out a lobster. Can't really blame the eel at all

Goliath groupers are one of my favorite fish. They are the epitome of "gentle giant".
I fell in love with them at the Texas State Aquarium. Several years ago they had several in a huge tank with sand tiger sharks, barracuda and various less intimidating fish. The biggest grouper would do rounds of the tank and it seemed like when small children got close to the glass, the grouper would come up close and check them out right at their eye level.
Sometimes he’d swim past slowly then make a quick circle around and do it again. Other times he’d approach dead on watching the kid the whole time. And other times, if the kid was fairly still, he’d float in front of them as long as he could.
I don’t know what was going on in his fishy brain, but he seemed fascinated by small children. I was so sad when that grouper died.
But even watching the divers with the other groupers, it was obvious how gentle they were, even at feeding time.

Lol gentle my ass you are delusional. I saw one drag a 200 lb man around for over 20 minutes. We thought she was going to drown him, his whole arm up to his elbow was mangled. I didn't live there but the friend I was diving with said it had to be amputated. That fish twisted his arm so many times that it was shattering bone.

I was diving in Cozumel in the late 90s and the guides told everyone NOT to feed the fish. Of course some old lady didn’t listen. She brought a ziplock bag of bread down. She was feeding little colorful reef fish when all of a sudden a Goliath grouper decided the bread was his. He was in the process of wrestling the bread away from the lady who didn’t want to just let it go when the dive guide swam over like a little Mayan torpedo and started jabbing the grouper. One of my more memorable dives to say the least.
