Minocycline made me super nauseous and fatigue but it did help with my acne for a while. Eventually my acne came back after stopping this medication. I wouldn't get on it again.
I was on minocycline and doxy in high school to try to combat my cystic acne, and it never really helped. Couldn’t be in the sun for 20 minutes, even cool days, on Doxy without blistering sunburns, then went to mino. Minocycline made me losing weight almost impossible. I have only lost weight since, with much less activity after i stopped taking them. I was the most physical i have ever been while on minocyline my sophomore and to the end of my junior year, and still gained massive amounts of weight. This is the only prescription besides ibuprofen and miralax i ever took then, I don’t like taking meds if i can help it. So nothing but these acne’s meds were in my system, so this isn’t just justifying situations. How tf could I have lost over 100 pounds, 290+ to 165 now, without any exercise, and with worse eating habits? Fast forward a couple years later when I got my wisdom teeth pulled out. The dentist specifically asked me if I had taken an oral acne medication. When I said minocycline and doxycycline, he said yup the minocycline would do it. These antibiotics specifically rot your teeth from under your gumline. When they pulled out them, there was a 2 mm black line. So its damn terrifying that i was never once told that this was a possible side effect. Nor the inability to lose weight, like it flat out stopped my metabolism, then it kickstarted a couple months after fullly quitting. Toooooo many coinciding issues, without other possible chemicals present.
One thing I respect Dr. Dray is that she is unique & doing her own thing. Unlike many skincare youtubers always try to get on another youtuber’s coattails.
I suffered from acne from 12 years old. I am now 59!! Until my early 40s, my life was a nightmare. The only treatment I didn’t try was accutane as I was of child bearing years. Then 15 years ago a dermatologist prescribed minocycline. I had previously been on tetracycline but it had done nothing. Minocycline was truly a miracle for me and I continued on it all these years, taking a pill every second day. Then about six months ago antibiotic resistance kicked in and I am breaking out again at this ridiculous old age. I am debating trying the heavy dosing of B5 as accutane still concerns me.🤦🏻♀️
I just got prescribed Minocycline for my acne, today. I discovered antibiotics were going to help my acne after I was prescribed a different antibiotic for a UTI last week and surprisingly, the antibiotics for my UTI started to clear up my acne within 2 days. I'm excited to see how Minocycline works for me. I can't take the combined oral contraceptive pill for my acne because of health contraindications, it's too risky, so that's why I'm trying antibiotics.
@@fatimaali-qz4jo long story short, I ended up having to get of Minocycline after a few weeks because of the side effects and also having kidney stones that my doctor believed may have been caused by the UTI i had, so, I can't really say whether the Minocycline worked because I wasn't on it long enough. I ended up switching to a lower dose of the antibiotic I had to treat my UTI- I believe it's called Trimethoprim. I was on a half dose of Trimethoprim for 4 months and it cleared my acne completely. I've had to get of it a couple of weeks ago because my urologist who is now monitoring my kidney stones, said it wasn't healthy for me to be on antibiotics for that long because of the increased risk of bacterial resistance and I'd only had the one UTI. So far, my skin has remained clear since coming of Trimethoprim. Trimethoprim is not usually used to treat acne, but it was a good side effect of the medication that it cleared my acne.
Long story short, the Minocycline didn't work out because I had to switch to another antibiotic to treat something else a few weeks after I was prescribed it. I also had some stomach issues when on Minocycline.
Thank you for making these videos! 💜 My derm had prescribed 20mg daily of doxy and said there is no risk of bacterial resistance at that low dosage (since at that dosage it'smeant to be anti-inflammatory rather than antibacterial), but others have disagreed with this... so I stopped taking it after 6 months. Would be very curious to know your thoughts! 😊
Thank you for this. I watched this video to see if itchy skin was a side as at night I feel like things are crawling over me but there is nothing there and it’s only started while on this.
Doxy worked for me for the first 2 months before my cystic acne came back again, my doctor has just changed me to minocycline instead, praying this works :(
Hello Dr Dray! Can you make a video on how skin is affected and treatment if you have autoimmune disorders? Like lupus, etc. It'll be of great help. Thank you.
Hello. Happy Friday. Last year I was on Minocycline for 5 months. My dermo said it was a harmonal breakout . I never had anything like this. The breakout was all over my face and upper chest and there were pustuales. I took the antibiotic and another topical and it cleared up well, but leaving a little bit of redness and I feel scarring.. to me it seemed like a rosacea and I still feel like once in awhile I get a small bump here and there. At 59 I really didn't think I would have be going through this with my skin but as of today it is much better. sometimes I wonder if it's just from stress, but I did have vertigo and really bad headaches for a while when on the medication. And I didn't like being outside in the sun.
Could you make a video addressing men’s beards or stubble and the skin underneath? Like if it’s okay to just apply our moisturizer and other products directly to beard stubble to get it on skin underneath. Thank you!
But if acne comes back if you get off the antibiotic and you’re still using every topical in the book, what other options are there (besides isotretinoin)? If you stay on the antibiotic indefinitely, besides potentially harming gut flora, are there any other things to keep in mind? What other solutions are there? I’d rather have some gut issues than inflammatory acne because my self-esteem completely drops when I get pimples.

The following year I had come off the pills but I was left with so many side effects. Constant and chronic heartburn that would lead to vomiting and nausea every day. I had many visits to the doctor, urgent care and the hospital including an endoscopy. Nobody could tell me why my body was acting the way it was. This went on for another year. Minocycline made me super nauseous and fatigue but it did help with my acne for a while. Eventually my acne came back after stopping this medication. I wouldn't get on it again.
Why would u not get on it again
Finishing this video, i had a incompetent dermatologist or he just didn’t care
How is this going? I just got prescribed it today and I’m kinda worried 😥😥😥
Results?
What can you say about the tablets? Did it help you?

Hello Dr Dray! Can you make a video on how skin is affected and treatment if you have autoimmune disorders? Like lupus, etc. It'll be of great help. Thank you.
Dr dray how do you know what I’m thinking about everytime???
Did the minocyclin help you?
Could you make a video addressing men’s beards or stubble and the skin underneath? Like if it’s okay to just apply our moisturizer and other products directly to beard stubble to get it on skin underneath. Thank you!
Dr vanita rattan just posted a video about skincare for beards a few days ago.
Isotretinoin its the ultimate solution, there is no other one, thats what my dermatologist said
Oral minocycline stains teeth on some people. I’m talking about brown staining. My hygienist got it all off of the back of my lower teeth thank God. I will never take that again!!
That’s one of the side effects of oral minocycline. It can stain skin too when taken as a long lasting treatment!
I got this side effect too, right before grad photos a few years back 😩
How long were you taking it before you noticed that?
@@yeseniacastillo4587 The first time I was on it for a year, but I’m not sure when I noticed it during that time. The second time I was on it for only a month. Which validated where the staining was coming from. This was two years apart.
lol i thought those marks were coffee stains but they must be a side effect of the medication. i’m on my third month of minocycline
My daughter ended up getting C Diff from Minocycline after a week. on top of that the vomiting. Never again she's suffering with acne :(
I was prescribed minocycline when I was a teenager (14-15 ish), by my primary care doctor and never told to limit the use to 3-4 months, and I ended up being on it for over a year. Looking back it must have been from the prolonged use of medication, right? Now that I am more educated I can’t believe that was never mentioned, they never ended up figuring it out either. :/

My problem is, is that not a single practitioner in the three years of me using it said to me that it shouldn’t be used long-term. They had my records. That should be malpractice.
It’s crazy how common this is! I had the same thing happen to me when I was younger!
i just got off minocycline thank u for this 💛
Does it effective
I was prescribed minocycline last year in combination with adapalene, used it for about 7 months it cleared up my skin really well, but when I stopped my acne came back worse and the antibiotics ruined my gut health. My doctor wasn’t very clear on how long I was supposed to be on it and didn’t tell me the risks mentioned in this video. Now I’m using tretinoin cream.
Hope this helps anyone who’s experienced the same thing
Same with my sister. She had a bout with c. Diff and this can reoccur.

I got really horrible mask-ne, from having one mask and needing to go out every day for about 2 months straight, and having expired skincare products. Bought more masks, got new skincare, but my mom insisted I still go to the doctor. The acne was so bad, every time I saw, well, anyone they said, "ouch, that looks painful," and it was! So now I'm on a combo of minocycline and clindamycin, doctor said clindamycin will be used for 3 months, the minocycline will be used for 40 days. So far, 20 days in, acne is looking better, not gone but redness and pain is very much reduced... but now I'm getting more forehead acne lol.
