  • Self-driving cars are poised to become the future of road transportation. But if they are going to share the road with us, they have to learn how we drive.

    I certainly hope all cars become autonomous someday. Imagine no red lights, not to mention being able to relax while driving.

      What red lights? Do you mean stop lights? I don't think that will change.

    • @kaycon4823
      @kaycon4823 5 років тому

      I think that you are minimizing to purpose of Stop lights. Why aren’t stop lights on every street? It is because the volume of traffic is different for each street. Automatous cars ‘zipping’ through intersections where the is little traffic and pedestrians is feasible.
      However, it is different when a street has high traffic. Lights don’t just tell people to stop and go. They control the flow of traffic. If automatous cars must make individual decisions as to when to go in high volume traffic in an intersection, they will not be ‘zipping’ anywhere. It will slow down the traffic flow. Add into that the complexities of pedestrians in the area.
      It is a more efficient flow for one side to stop as a group and other cars continue as a group.

      @@kaycon4823 The ideal scenario is that autonomous cars do not individually make decision but rather communicate with cars in a large radius to make decisions. For pedestrians all stop lights can be turned red at fixed intervals which the cars should be made aware of.

    How cool are the self-driving cars? No more wasting time while commuting to work, no stressing about parking and less possibility of dying! Not bad, not bad...

      Many people won't be able to do anything like work because of motion sickness. Safety will hopefully improve, but it will be quite a while. Better plan is to bike, walk, or take public transportation!

    As someone who works with self driving cars I get to ride in both the passenger and drivers seats. This type of learning is helpful for our cars in a simulation sense

    That simulation would have been Cutting Edge in the late 90s. Today Tesla has it right with running autopilot in Shadow mode on virtually every vehicle they have on the road. They're getting real world data as opposed to pretty comical scripted scenarios in VR. This video demonstrates a very antiquated way to prepare autonomous cars for the real world.

      We designed that simulation for a Mythbusters episode to study distracted driving, Dorsa was using it as a demonstration.

    As a bicycle/pedestrian activist, the problem that we're encountering are Uber driverless cars killing people. It seems like the problem that I'm noticing from my point of view is that the programmers/engineers are approaching the problem from "a driver can do no wrong" instead of the problem from my perspective which is "a car has more rights than you or I walking or biking."

    Step 1: Plan for the human drivers around you to make the most unsafe/worst choices possible.
    Step 2: Stay out of the way.
    This is essential to learn for any biker(motor or pedal!)who wants to survive long term in any urban traffic. I think the harder part is going to be ensuring the AI is assertive enough not to be constantly bullied, into safe modes or accident avoidance programs, in traffic by human drivers.

      the URL you posted includes the last parenthesis which leads to it not working. I recommend either removing the parens or just including a space between it and the last slash :)

    I'm thinking the main people to worry about self-driving vehicles should be truck drivers. They're about to be replaced :-/

    • @JuxtaposedStars
      @JuxtaposedStars 5 років тому +3

      It's very likely the trucking and teamsters unions and Federal transportation laws(in the USA at least)will require an "operator" to be in the seat of commercial vehicles for some time even with a really safe AI. There are also quite a lot of trucking applications which would be difficult to implement stand alone self driving: Construction sites, dangerous payloads like fuels, short haul vehicles that require a human to load/unload freight, and tow/recovery vehicles. Offroad industries like forestry, agriculture and mining also present significant and unique challenges. Many of these will probably require a human on board in case of emergencies, break downs, or simply to operate and monitor other parts of the equipment for the foreseeable future.
      This doesn't address seemingly small and solvable but expensive problems like: who puts 200 gallons of fuel in the truck at the only self serve fuel pump in the middle of nowhere? How are trailers swapped? Who maintains the security of the cargo and signs the and pickup invoices? Cabs and similar 'drivers for hire' on the other hand...well the nails are already in the coffin.

      When we filmed the Mythbusters episode, iMotions used an eyetracking system from ASL, this is a Sensomotoric Instruments glasses system (we actually owned the SMI glasses then as well)
