    Yes! As someone who was into photography, camera gear talk is exciting :D Just a couple more inputs from me if anybody sees this:
    - When you zoom in more, you get this effect called "background compression". What that means is that whatever is in the background will actually look closer to you than they actually are, but yes, it still gets blurred out more.
    - While having a wider aperture and higher zoom will get you the most blurry background, do take note that your lens will inevitably become more chonky, and this is especially apparent with zoom lenses that have a persistent wide aperture like the one shown at 07:18. This is because to get more light into your lens, you need more space in the lens to allow more light to pass through, and more space means wider front element, and more front element space means more glass and whatever mechanics exist in the lens and with zoom lenses, even more space for the moving parts, meaning you'll end up with a chonky boi.
    - If you are able to have your camera a little further away from you, I'd strongly recommend the 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8. Both are really small, lightweight, perform great in low light because of the wide aperture and most importantly, they are one of the most bang for buck lenses out there that don't snap your wallet out of existence (I believe it's around US$100, but my info mayyy be a little bit outdated, but it's definitely much cheaper than Harris' Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens)
    - For those of you who are struggling to understand the whole full frame sensor and cropped sensor deal, just know that full frame = bigger, catches more light (thanks to it's extra surface area), more expensive. Cropped sensor = smaller, looks more zoomed in than full frame with a lens of the same focal length, cheaper.
    - If you're looking for lenses, please also find out if your camera has a full frame or cropped sensor (or micro four-thirds sensor if that's what you have). Many camera brands sell lenses designed specifically for each of those sensors, and full frame lenses are generally more expensive as well and you definitely don't want to spend money on a lens that you can't make full use of. Also very important like Harris has mentioned, the size of your sensor also affects how zoomed in the resulting image looks, meaning that depending on the size of your sensor, the focal length of the lens you're looking for will also vary. So please do very thorough research.

      Hmmm I do have a question for you. If my camera is mounted about 1m (100cm) away from me. At 15mm (stock lens) I get a pretty wide shot (but a bit too wide almost for my setup and background) So instead of a 16mm f/1.4, what do you think about something like a 22mm f/2. How would these compare vs each other. Obviously the 1.4 will be a bit more blurry I assume and have a bit more of a wider shot. But the 22mm might be the better size for me with the camera a solid distance away from me and still be a pretty nice blurry with the f/2? Also for me its about availability in my country and the price of course. The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 will cost me roughly $500 and the 22mm f/2 will cost me $260 give or take... so it is a huge difference ofcourse. What do you think?

    • @mystixisme987
      @mystixisme987 3 роки тому +1

      @@ChessDoctorsOrigins With the stock lens you can definitely afford to move your camera much closer to you to restrict what it captures and keep the f-stop as low as possible. That would be your most affordable choice since you wouldn't have to buy extra gear. And since it's the stock lens, it's most likely a zoom lens too so what I'd suggest is to adjust the zoom on that lens first to roughly 22mm to see what the shot looks like so you have an estimate without having to actually buy the lens and potentially finding out that it's not the look that you want. Play around with the full range of zoom on your stock lens, play around with the camera's positioning and angle and test it until it's something you're happy with before thinking about buying lenses. I know your stock lens isn't going to have nearly the same background blur compared to even the f/2, but I'd suggest figuring out your camera's position and the kind of view you're most happy with, then look again at the different lenses available according to the focal length you want. Don't rush to buy gear.

    • @ChessDoctorsOrigins
      @ChessDoctorsOrigins 3 роки тому +1

      @@mystixisme987 Yeah I hear you. Since asking the question I have done all of that :). 22mm is going to be perfect at the angle and distance from my seat at the desk and the f/2 will add the blur I need. So i already ordered the lens (was basically just wondering between 16mm f/1.4 vs 22mm f/2. But I have made my decision as the 16mm would just be too wide of a shot at the distance I am going to be using (i am quite limited for space in this small room). Thank you very much for your replay and in general the information you gave in your post!

    a crop sensor focal length is the focal length times the crop, w/ sony's crop sensor believe its 1.5 and cannon it's 1.6 (check owners manual to be sure). So whatever the lens focal length you multiply it by the crop factor so a 16mm on a sony crop sensor would be the equivalent of a 24mm on a full frame. It also applies to the dof as well.
    That same 16mm f1.4 will still give you 1.4 stops of light, but due to crop nature and needing to pull back from the subject to get same shot you lose some of the dof. Fast and dirty way is to apply the crop factor to the aperture so 1.4 * 1.5 (crop factor) and y ou get 2.1. So essentially to frame your shot to match a full frame camera you'd be shooting at an equivalent of 2.1 f/stop so a little less dof.
    Lastly that sigma lens he showed is an apsc specific lens. So while generally you can take any sony e-mount full frame lens and put it on either a full frame or apsc, the sigma being an apsc specific lens will not work with a full frame. I'm also pretty certain that with an apsc specific lens they are designed with crop factor in mind so you don't lose the dof like mentioned earlier so 1.4 is 1.4 worth of dof. Also he fails to mention that even at 1.4 on apsc you are still receiving a lot less light due the smaller sensor, which is why apsc have poor low light performance when using an equivalent lens on a full frame. If you have the extra cash instead of buying say a sony 6400 for say 1k, for 600 more you can get the a73 full frame and will serve better over all, and less headache when deciding on what glass to get.

    I've done photography for over 15 years and while I got everything you were saying, it felt a lot more rambly and harder to follow than your usual stuff. Might be linked to the live nature of streaming though. Only major thing I would have added is some kind of visual queue, chart or ressource explaining that every major F jump (1.2, 1.8, 2.8, 4, 5.6, etc) is equal to half the light entering the sensor and so that going from a 1.8 to a 5.6 might seem like a small number jump but you actually have 8 times less light touching your sensor

    This was honestly your most manic video... if you’re going to explain the difference between a prime lens and a zoom, a zoom is a jack of all trades good at everything master of none, a prime is the best lens it can be at say 16mm. You also kind of just threw in the difference between an apsc sensor and full frame. A 16mm 1.4 on my a6100 is the same as a 24mm f2 on my A7iii. And yes I know most people aren’t dropping money on a full frame but I wish I bought lens that could of helped my transition into full frame. Also minimum focusing distance and sensor size are just as important as focal length for Bokeh. I bought a camera to bring my stream quality up, it got me into photography and now I’m working professionally doing that

    Hello, I'm in the market for a Camera that I can use for video conferencing, live streaming, ebay listings, and pc repair video's, I'm under the understanding that a mirroless camera that is full frame, would fit the bill, but my budget is tight. meaning I have around 500 to 1000 to spend, so what is a good reliable 4k camera that comes with a lens that will get me started. there's a lot of choices out there, and I don't want sony because they are, how to say it, they are Aholes as a company, so I don't buy there products. I'm looking at cannon and Panasonic, LUMIX G7 4K Mirrorless I know is not full frame, however what is a good cannon full frame equivalent. I know this is a lot to ask but I've spent weeks looking and have run into a dead end.

    i think you forgot to mention that sensor size matter too .the depth of field to get the blurriest background
    you can get the lowest F-Stop Number which usually is a Prime Lenses (also usually the blurriest), (or a kit lens Works too)
    ,Also the further the background is the blurrier it should get And more zoom-in that's about it .
    -Sensor size
    -Zoom
    -focal length
    -further separation of background
    -Lowest F-Stop Number Most of the time (f 1.8)
