- Hi everyone! This video was a fun video to make -- a combination of a recipe video and vlogging, a bit shot in Italy and a bit shot in the USA. Overall DELICIOUS and so much fun getting crafty with onion skins! Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks to my friend Brett for the inspiration on dyeing cloth with onion skins! You can follow her on Instagram @genupcycle.
TO MAKE FRIGGIONE:
-thinly slice 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) of white or yellow onions
-toss onions in a large bowl with 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp sugar
-let sit for 4 hours, stirring occasionally
-put onions in a pot on the stove over low heat and cook for 2 hours
-add 200 grams (3/4 cup) canned tomatoes, and stir
-cook for another 30 minutes
TO DYE CLOTH USING ONION SKINS:
-rinse onion skins
-fill a pot of water ¾ full
-put over heat and once it’s warm but before it simmers, add the onion skins. -leave the onion skins here for 1.5 hours, with the heat on low...it shouldn’t be boiling, but you should be able to see some steam coming off it.
-soak the fabric you want to dye in water for 1-2 hours.
-strain the onion skins -- I’m not too detailed about this, you can use a cheesecloth if you are.
-ring your soaking fabric and add it to the onion skin water, stir in until fully immersed.
-let soak over a low heat for 2 hours.
-turn off the heat and let sit overnight.
-the next day remove it from the pot and squeeze the excess liquid from it, and hang to dry. Voilà!

"an onion-y taco-y situation." Katie, you're so fun. Thank you for producing these amazing videos. : )
Mmm onions are delicious!
Love the dumpling shirt
It's a favorite!
There's a pizzeria in Maggi (close to Bologna) which makes pizza with friggione. Guilty pleasure at it's finest.
OH YES. This is going to happen during my next pizza night. Thank you!!
Wow non lo sapevo grazie magari la provo
Nice looking friggione! It is a fine addition to all the "bready" stuff that we have here in Bologna (tigelle, crescenta, crescentine, piada, ...). But my favorite way to eat it is with polenta (any kind of polenta: soft, baked, fried, ...).
Ooo!! Thank you for this tip! I will DEFINITELY be trying that soon!
That looks so good!
*_YEAH, SO I HAD LIKE 3 LBS OF ONIONS I NEEDED TO USE AND FOUND THIS VIDEO BY HAPPENSTANCE._*
*_YOU ARE OFFICIALLY MY FAVORITE PERSON RIGHT NOW._*
Fantastico! I’ve also used avocado pits/seeds they make a pretty pink and if you have a bad or cheap red wine that’s good too! You know the kind you bring your plastic container in and fill! And turmeric beautiful gold! Have fun! Best tip :was making the pancake out of your sourdough starter throw off! Brilliant! Also I’ve made patterns from leaves and flowers and a mordant! They come out beautiful!

I need to try using avocado pits!! I've heard of that one but never tried it. And the turmeric!! I need to get my hands on some mordant and experiment with that ... it's next up! :)
@@TheQKatie it’s really fun especially the eco printing! Enjoy!!! 🌺
What an interesting video! I didn't know onion skins could be so useful.
Right?! I was shocked, too. Love it!
Thank you
Love your videos!!!
Thank you, Molly!!
beautiful video
:) thank you!
Love the color and I LOVE ONIONS 🧅!!! I could probably eat all that goodness by myself! Probably great on a 🍔, 🌭, or 🍕!!
So true! Great on all those things!!
Hello
Oh my God friggione must be delicious. I must cook it. 👍
Yes, give it a try! So simple and sooo yummy
Well, you chose one of the best specialties of my hometown, Bologna. You might as well try crescentine, which go well with everything.
Il friggione è perfetto con il bollito.
Ahhh, immagino!! Grazie per questo, devo assaggiarlo!
Fortissima. Ciao Katie!
Ciao Chicco!
I had no idea you could cook the sourdough discard... Do you mix it with anything else, or just cook it straight from the pot? I'm glad you're highlighting friggione. It's not found that often in touristy places in Bologna, it's more of an insider's dish! :)
Interesting video topic! Yes, we should pay more attention to onions! Personally, I am more of a garlic girl :) Great tips though! Very original!
Hehe, I adore garlic, too!! I've gotta see if I can find a clever way to use garlic skins, too ... ;)
^^ ^^ which fixer did you use to color the fabric? cooking salt? and in what quantity?
Have you tried to use onion dyeing with jeans, in a similar way they do that with tea?
Whoa, no I haven't!
sei forte ragazza...in veneto si chiama la ziolà la cipolla,ci manchi tu sei una vera italiana
La ziolà la cipolla!! Bravi!! Adoro i vari nomi dei piatti in tutta italia.
@@TheQKatie ah scusa ho messo male l'accento è ziòla in veneto.....invece in piemontese è sciùla
Do purple onions work for purple dye?
YES!!!

Grazie.
