65 miles! This man walked 65 miles under the scorching summer heat with little to no food, water and rest. If you stop, you will be stabbed or shot by the Japanese. The only sustenance the soldiers during the death march got were from the locals in small villages along the way who risked their lives in giving the American and Filipino soldiers food and water in the cover of darkness or roadside bushes. A true survivor! May he rest in peace.

My uncle who was a member of the Philippine Scout that defended the hills and shores of Bataan, along with many Americans left behind by Gen MacArthur, survived the march but died of Malaria in a prison camp located in Capas, Tarlac, some 100 km north of Bataan. It was a painful death. We owe these special group of soldiers a debt of gratitude.

Other WWII Filipino veterans have organizations. I met one of the young soldiers (then aged 16-21) who faced the Japanese on their own when the camp collapsed. They have the HQ of their association in Baguio City. Still quite a number of members back then but counted. Though, that was 7 years ago.

Wow. I didn't know this is recognized because in my country the Philippines it's not being commemorated. My grandfather myself is a survivor of the death march so I really recognize this. May they rest in peace. 🙏
