Congratulations Miss America 2016!!!!! You blew everybody away with your performance--I came back here to make sure you were the one who had sung that fabulous opera performance! Bravo!!
BRAVA!! God, as a fellow classical vocalist, it is SO good to see one win and represent our country!! And what taste! Madama Butterfly is one of the greatest operas ever written!
This is surprisingly good. I mean, she ain't Renata Tebaldi, but for an amateur -- even someone with formal training, as she apparently has -- it is well-executed. It's clear that she actually knows something about classical singing, and is not one of those who gets up there and fakes it -- badly -- through "O mio babbino caro." It's also true that she's mic'd, but that goes with the territory.
Bravo to our beautiful and talented Miss Georgia....now Miss America 2016! The whole state is proud of you and now the country is proud to call you our Miss America. You'll represent us well.
Just read an interview about this woman and a link to her performance. OK. She's not a professional opera singer and both the mic and acoustics were horrible. Still,it was enjoyable. Reading the comments here I'm reminded what a snotty bunch opera fans are. It's that level of catty snobbiness that keeps opera from being enjoyed and appreciated by more people. If nothing else, Ms. Cantrell did a service by bringing a dramatic opera classic to those who might not otherwise ever hear it. I mean no disrespect to call it workmanlike. Certainly not professional but darned good for her age and training, to say nothing of the awful conditions she performed in. Brava!
What a performance. What an outstanding moving rendition! The moment I heard her voice, I fell in love with her and I knew I was listening to the next Miss America.
Fantastic Betty! I hope you will get your wish on Broadway. You are certainly talented and beautiful enough to achieve that objective. Listen to the likes of Vanessa Williams and Lee Merriweather on how it's done. You are terribly impressive. Congrats young lady.
A beautiful girl from humble beginnings. So happy for you, Betty. A modest Georgia peach, whose first name (Baciliky) means "royalty", finally gets her crown. Best of luck and warmest of wishes. : )
Bueno, bueno, bueno. Esta chica podría cantar un papelito en un teatro local de un pueblo de Wisconsin, pero cantar Isolde en Bayreuth pues como que no..
This was horrible, this is one of the hardest arias to sing, both technically and emotionally. For somebody who knows this, it was really hurtful to listen. A non-professional should not take this on.
Maybe think about the settings around and the mic it was videoed on and how the acoustics were. She’s young and not trained. Betty Cantrell came from rags. That’s her natural talent. as you said “for somebody who knows this, it was hurtful to listen to” not everybody in that house knows what opera is like just like not everybody may not know she came from a trailer park and never got to experience formal training to please the ears of those who like to go around and comment rude things like you did.
An honest sleazy pop song would have worked nicely instead of ruining something that is meant to be perfect and sacred. Don`t get me wrong, I listen to cheap music myself, actually I would kill myself If I lived only on Mahler and Verdi and all the great spirits out there reminding us how far we are from authenticity today. BUT opera IS about perfection, not (just) about how fast one is brought to tears. And is definitely not about glam. When you have the real thing, you really don`t need the simulacra (hashtag Andre Rieu as well). So for all the people here seeking emotion, please do look for the numerous and perfectitious renditions available on UA-cam at least - great emotions come with great technique (though not always vice versa) and each single human being deserves such an elevating experience.
+Carol Tolbert It's called "opera." And "opera" won her the title of Miss America 2016. Maybe you can enter the 2016 contest for "most jealous." Get over yourself and your fixations.
Don't think computer speakers are the best way to appreciate such a magnificent. voice. They tend to distort things. Sorry your ears hurt, but obviously you are in the minority on this one.
operakatz Uh, you're joking, right? She is LITERALLY a trained professional classical opera singer singing an aria from Madame Butterfly, one of the most well known operas by Puccini, one of the most well-received operatic composers of all time. You should prolly go ahead and take that "opera" right out of your name. Or explain you mean the web browser and not the music.
+TR5T That shrilling voice of a wounded witch is produced with the immediate assistance of the MICROPHONE mechanism that she possesses! Are YOU blind? Take it from one who knows, she has NO REAL OPERATIC TALENT! SHRILLS, ALLY-CAT SOUNDS are NOT produced by REAL OPERA SINGERS with excellent technique!
+TR5T Um, with a microphone? She was not producing a lot of sound, the sound system was doing that for her. She was creating no space for the voice whatsoever and showed zero understanding of the character at that point in the opera. Yet again another facsimile of "opera."
+operakatz Ok, good. I heard the performance and was super unimpressed, but everyone seemed to react so positively that I wasn't sure if I was missing something. It was just so flat. Dynamically and theatrically flat. I'm chorally, not operatically trained, but it sounded way to tight to be a well done piece.
+Seducio Santini You don't have to be so rude to the person who wrote the comment. All they stated was their own opinion and you came back in a very rude way.
D'avvero, che cosa fa male a Lei? Comdemned STUPDITY and YOUR MINGLED ASINE support are NOT matters just matters of opion. Such are the comments of IGNORANCE who dare to be BRASH and emboldened to comment on a thing of which YOU both lack knowledge. Besides DONKEY, only a BLIND person would not be recognizant of the AMPLIFYING MECHANISM attached to her ear and pouted to her MOUTH. Seemingly yyour glasses are OUT of function and your LACK the mere concept of the word OPERA! La donna stava gridando come una STREGGA herita e perduta.! E come Lei, e' una animale abandonatta! Una cosa piu': Vorrebbe degli amici stupendi? Che scelga degli animali come Lei!!! Ha perso la testa!
Title means "You, You, Little God". This takes place when Mme. Butterfly, aka Cio-Cio-San discovers that her husband has gone back to the states and got married over there. She then tells her son that she had by this betrayer that it might be the last of her. & Mademoiselle Cantrell looks like she's ready for the NY Metropolitan Opera.
+James Lehr You are kidding right? She is nowhere ready for any professional opera theater. Do you have a clue as to what the competition is in opera? Oh, and the Met is a 3800 seat theater and there are no microphones there. Singing a role in an opera much less in a theater such as the Met is a far cry from singing an aria with a microphone in a beauty contest. Watch the Met documentary "The Audition" some day to get an idea of what the competition is like in the opera world.
hell no. I can probably sing louder than her even though I'm ten years younger. She has no training, and the tension is worrying. Just, if the Met hires her, I will flat out refuse to listen to anything because that means they have no better alternative.
Emotionless delivery, sharp, and unnatural vibrato (wobble), and obviously not really opera given the microphone. Good for an amateur, but I wish TV would stop presenting opera as something that people can just bust out without formal training.
Congratulations Miss America 2016!!!!! You blew everybody away with your performance--I came back here to make sure you were the one who had sung that fabulous opera performance! Bravo!!

I totally agree, it was lovely and must´ve been extremely hard for someone that´s not a pro!
She sounds wonderful and she is beautiful.
Well bless her heart.
Beautiful and talented! She's a powerhouse!!!!!! 💕💕💕💕
Wow! What a Voice!!!! As we say in the Black Community, " You Betta Sang!!!"
+Bryan Edney yaaaaas!!! she did that!!!!
This is beautiful and her talent in undeniably breathtaking. I love opera now. Thank you for this inspiring performance.
What a performance. What an outstanding moving rendition! The moment I heard her voice, I fell in love with her and I knew I was listening to the next Miss America.
This is what won it itA total Woman standing Bringing every quality there is Oh yes Broadway audition ... Broadway is yours, Darling
Outstanding! Congratulations Miss America 2016! America loves you and so is Greece!
Fantastic Betty! I hope you will get your wish on Broadway. You are certainly talented and beautiful enough to achieve that objective. Listen to the likes of Vanessa Williams and Lee Merriweather on how it's done. You are terribly impressive. Congrats young lady.
Awesome performance!🌿🩷

Bravissima Bella Diva! Thank you for representing REAL singing!!
She's giving me La Carlotta vibes
AND SHE WON THE TITLE!! #YES ★★★
OMG! Bravo, bravo BRAVO!!!! Magnificent performance!
Go Betty, Go.
Laura and Charlie Moore
amazing
My next American idol
You guys do know the character kills herself directly after singing this, right?
What a gorgeous dress!
OMG! BRAVA!
If you listen close enough, you can probably hear her fellow Miss America contestants swearing off stage. ;)
Lovely!
She sang this touching, beautiful Puccini aria very well with strong conviction-I am glad she won.
she could AT LEAST sing it with the right lyrics!
Brava Brava
I fortgot to say.I love you & keep on keeping on!
Betty, we all know...
Bueno, bueno, bueno.
From Puccini's Madame Butterfly
You make a grown man cry. Oughta be a law!
Whoa. I usually enjoy a little opera, but that really hurt my ears :/
watch and compare Amarilli Nizza singing the same Madame Butterfly aria at the Puccini gala in Bologna (2007)!
Well, I liked it :3
Wait and she won over Miss Colorado? Spiff! She did a wonderful job yes but Ive also heard better.
Ma che sta dicendo?!?! 😂😂 LOL
Lots of pitch problems. Difficult to listen to with the cuts. Ending was made up. Not how it was written. All in all poor choice of pieces.
This was horrible, this is one of the hardest arias to sing, both technically and emotionally. For somebody who knows this, it was really hurtful to listen. A non-professional should not take this on.
+Judith F woulda been really cool if Miss Co had won, someone beautiful on the outside as well as inside, showing what she loved best, nursing!
Oh yea. Could you have done any better?
Quite possibly. I know I could.
Judith F I thought it was Beautiful

my ears hurt. just don't get into that screaming
+Carol Tolbert You consider Opera... screaming? Are... Oh Jesus, give me strength to get through the day full of all the stupid people.

+evilkillerwhale Don't assume Carol considers that "performance" to be opera (it wasn't).

How can such a small body produce that? wow.

What's up with her armpits?
+Jas Judge LOL
She has a spray tan and they don't spray the arm pits, lol!
So so so bad.
That was pretty bad...
Miss Colorado should have won. Not this brainless act of singing, being a nurse, that's something!
Shut up. Shut it. Stupidity has no place here and who are you?
Emotionless delivery, sharp, and unnatural vibrato (wobble), and obviously not really opera given the microphone. Good for an amateur, but I wish TV would stop presenting opera as something that people can just bust out without formal training.
Devono squalificarla solo per la voce 😖😖😖😖
not good
Oh goodness... this was absolutely terrible. And she won?
mmmmmhhhh uno strillo. Puccini non e' da tutti
Mk should have won!!!! not her
