    Season Four - Episode Seven: "Problem Dog"
    Episode Overview:
    As she is preparing to open the car wash, Skyler brusquely orders Walt to return their son’s new car to the dealer. However, upset at being told what to do when it comes to Walt, Jr. and displeased with being given the cold shoulder, Walt instead sets the car ablaze in a large parking lot. As a result, he’s forced to call his lawyer, Saul Goodman, to get him out of trouble with the law. Having agreed to pay more than $50,000 to make the legal problem go away, Walt then asks Saul for help in getting rid of Gus once and for all. And when Walt takes the lawyer’s advice to ask his young partner to take care of the job, Jesse agrees to kill Gus.
    Faced with Skyler’s frosty, business-like demeanor, Walt strikes a blow of his own by delivering over $250,000 in cash for her to launder through the car wash along with the news that there is much more to come. Leaving his wife to struggle with finding a way to conceal the millions that are coming their way, Walt returns to the lab to prepare a batch of ricin, the same deadly poison he and Jesse used to kill their nemesis, Tuco. Meanwhile, during a trip to Pollos Hermanos with Walt, Jr., Hank gathers fingerprint evidence he hopes will tie Gus to the meth lab.
    Accompanying Mike to the high-security headquarters of the meth empire, Jesse is thrust squarely in the middle of Gus’s meeting with a Mexican drug cartel representative. Though the cartel’s message is clear - get out of the drug business, or else - Gus refuses, though he stops short of Mike’s suggestion that he resort to violence. Yet, after Jesse hesitates to take advantage of the opportunity to poison Gus, he begins to regret it after Mike warns him against harboring any misplaced loyalties. Finally, as Jesse heads back to rehab to confront his own inner demons by venting his anger on the addicts gathered there, Hank presents his former DEA colleagues with evidence linking Gus to the manufacture of the potent blue meth they’ve been trying to eradicate in Albuquerque.

      Buck Futter Actually if you think about it, when Walt gets himself into those seemingly impossible situations, he usually gets other people to bail him out. It’s less to do with his smarts than you think. When he was about to be killed, Jesse killed Gale and saved him. When he gets stuck in the RV with Hank outside, Saul saves him. Here, Skyler is going to deal with his money and he doesn’t even understand the problem.
      Most of Walt’s ‘smart’ solutions’ are just pure violence. Killing Krazy-8, killing Jane, killing Gus, killing Mike, killing literally anyone in his way. It’s less about smarts when in 9/10 situations you shoot your way out.

      @@sahirkhan2835 - I agree that it's not intelligence in the academic sense (which he relies on to develop a meth formula). What he uses is a form of wisdom, specifically cunning, to get out of tough spots. He uses his knowledge of science and other people and applies it ruthlessly in unexpected ways.
      It's not as simple as just shooting his way out, because they would have left far more of a trace, and he'd have gotten busted early. He finds the right time and the right method to shoot his way out, which takes cunning. But in the end, the little splatters that fly out from his violence accumulate to put him in an inescapable bind.

    I took a financial investigations class as part of my finance minor. An IRS agent taught the class. I learned a lot about money laundering. The single biggest choke point for illegal activity, especially drug related enterprises is what to do with all the money. Smuggling drugs into the country is only one side of the equation-getting the money out is actually very problematic. Domestic drug enterprises are challenged with excess money as well. Can't bank it, can't live well above your means either if you're on Walt's level. Laundering can get expensive and even so, you end up with unexplained real estate holdings. A couple of million is easy. 80 million is tougher than it appears. If they see you living substantially above your means, or no visible means of support, they'll interview your neighbors, employer ( if applicable) to determine lifestyle. The IRS will literally go through your trash looking for receipts to build a case and then they will say you have an income much greater by 10x and say you owe taxes unless you can prove your income stream. If you refuse, they want you to cut a check for the back due, so they can make you prove where you got that money.

    • @CarFreeSegnitz
      @CarFreeSegnitz 3 роки тому +5

      Does the IRS care where you got the money from? I’ve always understood that they only care that you pay the tax on it. Al Capone was taken down by tax evasion not by the murders he committed or ordered.
      Other branches like law enforcement do give a care. $7.5 million a year is going to come with loads of victims.
      Here in Canada our IRS (we call it CRA-Canadian Revenue Agency) is not allowed to share information with law enforcement. If they ever ask where my declared income came from and I answered “drug dealing and prostitution” all they can say is “okey-dockey”. Once I’ve paid the tax CRA doesn’t care. If law enforcement has a problem it’s up to them to scrounge up the evidence and haul me in front of a judge. It wouldn’t be a hard job… $7.5 million per year is going to leave a lot of evidence and lots of victims ready to exact revenge.

    • @weirdshibainu
      @weirdshibainu 3 роки тому +27

      @@CarFreeSegnitz Yes, the IRS does care where you get your money. Unlike Canada, the IRS can work with other agencies. Law enforcement simply couldn't prove that Capone had a direct hand or conspiracy in the violent side of his enterprise, not that they "didn't care" about his use of vioence. It was the first time the feds used tax liability as an enforcement tool which later morphed into RICO in 1970. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racketeer_Influenced_and_Corrupt_Organizations_Act
      Rico is used to bust open organized crime as it would be hard to come up with evidence for a $ 7.5 million a year enterprise. Capone was worth around $ 100 million ( $ 1.5 billion today) at his peak. Think about it, would you go to court and testify against a Capone like figure? You would need dozens of people with first hand knowledge to give him and time and victims and associates aren't going to testify.

      What are you talking about? The CRA absolutely IS allowed to share info with other government agencies. They even have a federal program, the Criminal Investigations Program, that involves the CRA working with the RCMP and other agencies to catch tax evaders.
      In addition each province's CRA department has an investigative unit that goes to peoples' businesses and/or homes to personally interview business owners if their tax reports seem shady and turn up red flags. If the owner(s) can't give a good answer, the CRA then refers the case to the RCMP or to a local police department, who take any info collected by the CRA ans start criminal investigations.
      It's not good to oversell how easy it is to do crimes because that helps convince poor people who would otherwise never try to sling drugs to give it a shot. That leads to many people ending up in jail for years who would otherwise not have.

      Oh man, this scene makes me hate Skyler SO MUCH.
      1) She preaches morals to Walt, but has no problems laundering his money, and handling that much cash. That means she does get a kick out of it.
      2) When Walt tells her he makes 7.5 million a YEAR, rather than being happy, Skyler tries to bring him down and discourage him.

      She's absolutely right. You can't launder that much money with one car wash. You might could do it with like 50. She had a plan to launder like 150,000 dollars. There isn't a solution to the problem of 7.5 million.

She's scared they're going to get caught, and Walt's just stands there, looming over her, daring her to oppose him, basically telling her to stop bitching and figure it out.
    Keep in mind, Skylar is right. They don't have a way of laundering their money, and this money they can't use is a massive liability. It ends up being central to Walt's downfall. If their money was safe in a bank, Jesse couldn't have threatened to burn it.

      @Straight White Male ...yeah, unconditional loyalty is a pretty unintelligent trait. if you're loyal to something no matter what happens, you're pretty stupid.

    Tbh, Walt should have just left it here. He was working for Gus, and making huge amounts of money. And Skylar seemed good with laundering the money. His kids would have no idea and still got the money he made. But his ego ultimately ended all of that…

    ever since i watched this show i think about how the hell would i handle this, its almost impossible to laundry that kind of $ without fcking up, the level of stress this would cause its just not worth it i think. what do you guys think? XD

    • @dafcorleone
      @dafcorleone 5 років тому +2

      @deenman23 yeah, but the business would need to be successful in order for the laundry to work, alter the books and stuff, and you will need a hell of an accountant XD

      anyone who's smart will realize that this show demonstrates how not worth it this business is. yeah you might get a lot of money but, you'll barely get to enjoy it being so paranoid about being killed by a rival or caught by the feds

      Make a few million then quit as soon as you can, that's a dangerous business. Very slowly launder the money, even if it takes decades. Buy stuff with cash in the meantime. Not stuff that has paper trails like cars, or real estate but untraceable things like clothes, latest tv or computer. Eat out at nice restaurants a lot. Enjoy life.

      Quitting isn't usually an option.

    *Questions Skylar should have asked (she's supposed to be an accountant):* "Hey Walt, to to the nearest million, what's the ballpark on how much money per year we can be expected to need to money launder?"

    Walt should've hired Marty Bryde to launder for him. The best crossover partner

    She's not wrong, there is such a thing as to much money to launder. All it takes is the IRS putting two and two together, watching your business and seeing there's no way you are doing the amount of legal business you're claiming to do.
