I had severe tennis elbow caused by 24 years of military service and when I started playing tennis again 🎾 it was quite painful. After several months of testing tennis equipment and making changes to the exercises I do in the gym my tennis elbow is basically gone. The most comfortable racquet for me is the the Pro Kennex Ki Q+Tour Pro (315). I put Alpha Gut 2000 16g (1.33mm) in the mains at 52 pounds and Volkl Cyclone Tour Red 18g (1.20mm) at 50 pounds in the crosses. I spent an hour practicing on the tennis wall at the local park and no pain at all. The total weight of the racquet with the overwrap, vibration dampener, and strings is 339g.

I use a dampener (sampras O ring best I've tried). It's more about the feel than the noise, Night and day for me. String bed feels much better more solid with a dampener. I feel more connected to the ball with a dampener. when my dampener falls off it feels just as bad as breaking a string to me feels terrible. I hate the feel of the string vibration traveling through the racket racket just does not feel solid with out it. As far as tennis elbow stiff light racket with lots of vibration not going to help, but most people most likely gripping the racket too tightly. loosen your grip and arm develop a loose live arm and you probably won't have tennis elbow anymore plus you will hit with more power, control & spin. stay loose & whip it whip it good

I made a blindtest taking my racket in right hand and taping on my left hand with the string bed. I used earplugs to don’t ear any different of noise. I swear on 10 times i recognize the 5 times my friend put the dampener on and 5 times it was off. The difference on my right hand was huge because of vibrations. So ok maybe this science article say there is no difference but it probably depends of the racket, tension, dampener etc… because for me it works very well

It is a relative topic. From my view, vibration has nothing to do with the tennis elbow, it is only the shock moment of the contact point. Tennis elbow is an issue of not having a decent technique and right tennis racquet or right string set-up that fits players playing style. Mostly it occurs if you often miss sweet spots and at the same time your food work is not aligned with your contact point of the ball correctly. I only use a dampener when I don’t have enough time to re-string my racquet. If I feel a lack of control because the string set-up needs to change, then I take in a dampener to provide a bit of tension to the strings to gain a bit more control and lose a bit of power (this idea may not work for every string type of set-up!). Dampeners mute the racquet completely off. It affects the feel and comfort that those elements are very much coordinated with the ears and the haptic. Audio dimension can be an important element to a tennis player for receiving correct feedbacks right after each stroke, especially to gain the right rhythm.

I have to agree 100% with you. I do start paying 8 months ago I'm 33 years old. I first played with $20 raquet and I start getting better and bought Blade 98 V8 16x19 with Poly Wilson Spin Revolve at 55lbs and start working on single backh. I didn't know nothing about it but now I do.... I love the raquet but I change the strings it help big time. I also try with the Clash and it solve the problem but I hate the Clash. I started doing a love of relaxed moves on the wall and when I started getting techinc right and my hand start getting very lose at the contact follow tru ect. my elbo start going away. The biggest pain was single backhand with Revolve spin strings. Again all those things can make it worse or better but the main thing is my technic is terrible an no dampner or dampener when you contact wrongly the ball at single backhand nothing can save your arm but I think now managable pain is helping me to fix my game.

I play with the Wilson BLX six one tour 90 racket. It has 17L TIMO luxilon strings in it and lead tape on the top of the racket from 10 to 2 o’clock and on the handle. It goes through the contact zone like a knife through butter. It doesn’t need a dampener but I use one anyway. Feels great.

I have an old banged up racket that I play with. It was a hand-me-down from my dad and it was the first rocket I had any personal attachment to so I'm never going to get rid of it. Nowadays I mostly just use it as a backup racket for when my main racket strings break. My point is that I feel a difference in my hand with him without a dampener for this racket. When it comes to this racket I can feel a shock going through my hand whenever I hit anything but the sweet spot without a dampener, but when I have a damp in there on it it feels much more comfortable. I don't think that it's just the sound playing tricks on my mind because in some cases my hand can actually hurt. However with my newer racket which I purchased just this year, I play without a dampener because I don't have that same sensation from it. The sound difference is still there but the feel difference is not there. Whether it is because my old racket is old, like from 2008 old, or if it is because my old racket is beat up and maybe damaged in the frame somewhere, it's unclear to me. But there's definitely a difference in physical sensation with and without the dampener for this older racket.

I own a RTP dampener too. It does feel different compare to other dampeners out there and that's exactly the point... A little bit of control you have with changing dampeners might be the switch in your head to perform better. I've used just about every dampener out there but I always go back to Tourna Sampras O dampener; in my head, I play my best tennis with the O and that's enough for me.

So you rate the Pete Sampras 0 dampener above the RTP dampener. Interesting indeed, what kind of pain induced you to buy the expensive RTP dampener or was it just curiosity? There's for certain a special benefit in that Pete Sampras O. I agree with Jonas a good vibration reducing racket is a better start, but I've already been that route. I'd rather get more mileage out of my recently purchased Head Gravity Pro Auxetic, such a rewarding stick and exceptionally well designed for my style of play🤔

I notice a minor difference in shock between a worm dampener and no dampener in wrist discomfort (but I have minor ulnar abutment so I'm a little different). But this difference is dwarfed by the benefits of sticking some extra weight in the racquet handle.

    Good info.
But one point of contention: tennis elbow is primarily caused by bad strokes. Otherwise all pros and amateurs who play a lot would get it. The racquet and strings can lessen it but improving form is the key.

Damper serves to reduce the peak amplitude of any vibration while shifting the natural frequency of the system down.
So, if the sound is disappeared, it means it is working. Reduced the frequency. It might not be enough to reduce the peak amplitude for you to protect your arm though.

  • @Yardehardedar
    @Yardehardedar 3 роки тому

Dampeners don't do much to reduce harmful frequencies that come from the frame. They shorten the vibrations of the strings, which are around 500-600 hz. The frame vibrations however are around 100-150 Hz if I remember correctly. Those are completely different beasts and go through without any dampening effect from the dampener.

I always play with a dampener. Without one, the feeling when the ball hits the racquet is uncomfortable to me and just doesn't sound as good. Tennis elbow is unrelated to the dampener in my experience, that has to do with the racquet or the strings themselves and too-tight tension. I like dampeners also as an accessory to the racquet for aesthetic purposes!

I generally find dampeners make racquets feel too "muted", but recently I started noticing a lot of my racquets swing nicer with a dampener on, so I've been adding lead tape at the equivalent location of a dampener. I think this might have something to do with mgri, as it adds quite some weight without changing the balance and swingweight by much.

Yonex vcore 95 strung with poly tour pro with NO dampener plays superb. People say the racquet is more muted than the past versions so playing without dampener works well as I like an amplified sound from my shots. Also, ptp has more feel and feedback than polytour fire which was way too muted. I use to play with dampener and I’m so glad I’ve put it back in the bag.

Yes I agree dapeners reduce feel. TBH I'm just as happy with a tied elastic band. I have to say if vibration dampeners reduce vibration it stands to reason it would be less irritation. I find this is the case but you are sensory deprived. You definitely feel more feedback without vibration dapeners. The elastic band speaks to me however. It silently reminds me to stay relaxed and that tennis is only a game. Invaluable when you forget you're tensing up which is an automatic impediment though fixable!

  • @Fernwald84
    @Fernwald84 3 роки тому +2

Regarding the vibration dampening ability of these devices, remember that, for example, in a 16x19 pattern racket there are 16x19x2=608 connections of the strings to the racket's frame. Most dampeners only cover a couple of main strings and one cross string so it isn't hard to see that they won't reduce the total amount of frame vibrations very much. Even the "worm" style dampeners only cover a small fraction of those 608 connections. Another complicating factor is that we humans evaluate the "feel" of some object in our hand partly by the sound made when an object strikes it. So an object which emits a high pitched "ping" will feel more annoying than an object which emits a muffled "thud"--regardless of the actual amount of vibration present.

I think, it would be great if u could talk about a good balance of various criteria of a serve (or any other shot); namely, when someone is trying to improve a serve (or other shots) should (s)he focus more on speed, precision, consistency or variety? [these are criteria that I can name now, but there may be more]. Of course it's individual (some are better at speed and some at accuracy etc.), but there should be some range of a reasonable, efficient ratio, because e.g. it would be useless if one had 300kmph serve which goes in 10% of the time, always with same spin and god knows in which direction.

I stopped using a dampener when I played with the Wilson Blade Countervail (overly dampened to begin with). Moved on from that stick but never went back to the dampener. I guess now I just think about a dampener as adding weight (and SW) where I would never add it otherwise and reducing feedback (string noise) which I have learned to like.

  • @nostro1001
    @nostro1001 3 роки тому

I've been saying much the same for years, like yourself, based on research etc. Dampeners only reduce the sonic vibrations and hence the sound, although one may think there's more going on, especially in relation to actual dampening.
If we look on the tour there's plenty that use dampeners and plenty that don't.
I'd suggest the trend has kind of settled now as for a period of time just about all would use them. Going back to the times when rubber bands were the thing, until they came into mass production and acceptability.
I haven't used a dampener in roughly 6 years, beforehand I'd always use one and couldn't stand the 'ping' sound. I felt that the racquet seemed way more solid on impact with more of a thud & they were a must.
Now, I think I get greater 'feedback' without and the sound I don't even think about.
So, it's likely more about what you get used to. However, thinking it's helping your body (arm/shoulder), it certainly does not.
    Cheers 🎾🎾🎾

From my experience, I used a dampener for many years wanting to have a muted feeling and silence the sound of the strings, which helped me gain confidence. However, a couple of years ago I stopped using it during a match, because I noticed that it didn't let me know what condition the strings were in or how well the tension was being held. In conclusion, I have even more confidence when hitting the ball and I know with greater certainty how the shot will come out.

I am currently using RTP's dampener (ultrasoft). It definitely changes the feeling (much more muted).
I want to mention that any change in sound, in terms of loudness and/or tone, suggests that the vibration amplitude and/or frequency changed. It would be hard to imagine that any type of dampener would actually increase vibration frequency or amplitude, so it must be reducing them. The question should be that whether the amount of reduction is practically meaningful to help with tennis elbow or any sort of discomfort/pain. Personally, it was the case for me (with my wrist), especially with the Ultrasoft one by RTP, but not so much with the Magic one.

I say the only reason that there’s any tennis elbow and shoulder problems and a wrist problems because the technique I say this on experience.

Hi, could you please do a video comparing a store bought racket with the same racket with silicone in the handle? I know they would be different weights, so maybe weight one with lead and use silicone and lead in the other to make sure they are matched.

I definitely must disagree with you Jonas. I have an ultra sensitive shoulder I guess. I went to great length (3 months of demos) to locate a shoulder friendly racquet. For a couple of months now I have enjoyed a dampener free player's racquet. There's no question tennis is more & more heavily addicted to power.
Quite by accident between points I happened to glance down at garbage on the court. I'm often looking for ankle breaking tendon tearing tripping hazards. A little hobby of mine. Oh how incorrect that assumption turned out to be! What I found was a slightly TORN* Pete Sampras O shaped Dampener with his name on it. I reasoned the previous player discarded it for that reason. (there $3 each) Frankly like you Jonas, I wasn't expecting anything but forced myself into a more collaborative attitude. Well total disclosure here, I didn't have any choice pain effected my quality of play significantly.
I stuck it on my strings (still inwardly skeptical) and instantly to my amazement the comfort level on my Gravity Pro Auxetic soared! All this on a WORN-OUT DAMPENER 😲
Yes I am indeed looking for that Road to Pro dampener as I have heard good feedback on them. Sadly they're sold out on Amazon.ca, no word when they can replenish shelves. 😣 An ominous sign they're selling well
Stateside where there's more profit for the owner-developer (a former ATP Pro) The big takeaway here is an ORDINARY* indeed compromised dampener permitted my game to endure far LESS pain! Allowing me to hit a harder shot much more often was a great relief.
The destiny of today's game, more rocket like than finesse like. So what can clinically tested Sorbothane do??? Hmmm well first, try that Pete Sampras dampener if you haven't for yourself. I know I'm a cheap date but seriously this dampener makes a huge difference in my arm endurance, no matter how clean my ball striking. You will find Tournagrip has bought the rights for Pete Sampras line I think. At least it sure looks that way 🤔
As for the pricier RTP dampener yes sir most definitely I'm buying and will be very keen to let you know my opinion on this wonder material called Sorbothane. Not for bragging rights, I'm genuinely interested in your personal enjoyment of the game.

Thank you very much for this video Jonas. I trust your word far more than the majority of any of the many Snake Oil salesmen tennis attracts. I freely admit I myself was attracted to the temptation of just looks in a dampener. Until I happenstanced on a very shabby Pete Sampras dampener I would never have believed it. Here's to more pain free tennis everywhere! I'll be baaaack 🤫 👋 🍻 🎾🇨🇦

I never tell ppl that dampeners don't do jack for Tennis elbow. I figure if they get some sort of placebo benefit, why not let them keep believing it. I encourage ppl to use theraband (it does seem to work though I don't know if there are actual studies) and to make sure they have forward contact.

im a little annoyed, i was having issues with my elbow with my ezone 100+ with lead tape setup. and i figured it was the racquet. I previously used the older generation of this setup and didnt get the same vibration sound and didnt have arm issues. So i play tested the ezone tour and really liked it, so many great players were promoting it and i didnt get the same vibration sounds. When i finally got it, i started hearing the vibration sounds on mine. I figured it might be the string i use (hyper g 16), so now im looking into strings. But now im coming across a ton of videos from the same people that recommended this racquet that it eventually gives u tennis elbow issues even if u dont hear the vibrations. Sucks cuz i really like the ezone line, ive never played so well with any other racquet. Dunno if i should stick with it cuz i dont want to be unable to play tennis in the future.

I hate dampeners because it makes the tension tighter and reduces the trampoline feel of the shots. It was believe for a time that dampeners actually worsens one's tennis elbow because instead of the energy being absorbed by the racquet, it is being repelled by the dampener, and therefore has nowhere to transfer but to your arm. So in essence, it's not a dampener because it doesnt absorb the shock, but repels it.

Hey Jonas, nice video. I'd like to see a video about adding weight to a racquet. I've never actually done it but I have the pro kennex Ki q + tour 300 grams and would like to add about 10 grams to add a bit more stability. No idea if that would have any negative side effects as the racquet was made for the 300g weight....

Most people think it helps with tennis elbow. If thats the case then why would it only be sold 5.00 a pop and why wouldn't the package say it helps with tennis elbow. Its because its doesnt and its all about feel and if they did say that it thats a law suit waiting to happen. Thats a false claim. Tennis elbow comes from poor technique.

  • @rutan4000

I'm a dampener guy. The more muted the feel, the better. However, the more muted the feel, the worse I play. And I concur that the dampener doesn't affect tennis elbow. I've used the long snaky dampener and the small wilson dampener on my old hyper prostaff 5.0. While the snaky dampener will get me a more muted feel, it doesn't reduce the amount of harsh vibrations sent to my arm, and I still cannot play with that racket for long before my elbow starts to hurt. It is just too stiff for my arm regardless of the dampener used.

I play with a customized Speed S which needs quite a bit of dampening cuz of vibrations. I've used 2 dampeners or 2 rubber bands to get my desired feel, but decided to try ADV dampener. I purchased the max sorb and it seems to only dampen like a regular single dampener. I will be sending them back. These might work for someone using single dampener and the appear to stay attached well, but did not dampen near the level I expected.

Dampeners change the trampoline level of your string bed. its pure physics. anything that is positioned on the vibrating string, change its behavior in some way of its vibrating pattern.
Thats why you feel different string bed with and without dampener

      RF97 v11 + Luxilon BB original 28kgs.
There is simple totaly difference and different behaviour in trampoline edfect and the way string responses.
I CAN feel the difference. i am around 4-4.5 player and i am quite sensitive to everything you put on the frame.
Pure physics. Put something on the strings and the strings will behave differently.
so, next time, just learn some basic wave mechanics …. and physics too.
Everything mounted on vibrating string has impact on strings behavior.
one, two, three dampeners.. start counting..
      You will learn the difference
Maybe you are not sensitive to small changes, BUT changes are there and the sound changes are last one that get changed…
