  • How to Make BeePro Pollen Patties - BeePro Pollen Patties - Pollen Substitute
In this video I make up 100kg of pollen substitute patties to feed to my colonies.
My colonies went into the winter very low on pollen/available protein, so they need a boost to help with early brood rearing.
I usually use ultra bee but have used Bee Pro in the past.
The recipe I use is from Mike Palmer who has excellent success with this recipe.
    17 lb hot water
    42 lb sugar
    6oz vegetable oil
25 lb dry sub I use Ultrabee
Black Mountain Honey is a No Nonsense Beekeeping Channel.
We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

We supply F1 Mated Buckfast Queens throughout the season. These are genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

At 14 lb water and 42lb sugar isn't that 3:1 syrup and not 2:1?

    Hello! I have a question!
If we use ultra bee shouldn't the sugar syrup be inverted so that the patties doesn't harden? Thank you in advance!

You can use invert no problem. The oil in the mix is designed to keep then soft and supple. Feed in small quantities and regularly to help stimulate a flow and it shouldnt harden.

I have never tried mixing pollen patty’s. Quite like the idea. Your the second person I’ve seen this week doing a diy mix!
Do you put them in microwave containers and feed like fondant? Or wrap them in paper and slap them on?
Out of interest what price does it work out as per kilo? (Not including labour just material)
Will the mix work with invert syrup?

      Was the other Richard Noel?
I usually use greaseproof paper and score for access but it's a bit cold at the moment, so for longevity, I've filled plastic freezer bags (next upcoming video) and made an entry hole.
Works really well with invert syrup but I try to keep the cost down with 2:1 cold water syrup. I made up 120kg of patties and it costs me £110, so less than £1/kg. The savings are pretty huge!

Black Mountain Honey yea it was! Really like his content! That is really cheap per kilo. Will definitely consider it if I need to go down that road. Will definitely buy a small amount to experiment with this year and compare nutrition levels with ready made stuff I’ve already got. Suppose it’s cheap if your committing to give it to a large number of hives. Not just a select few that really need it. But it won’t hurt...no doubt he bees will thank you for it!

@@gwenyngruffydd His content is fantastic and he's a really genuine guy!
Be very interesting to see what the comparison is like between the forumulated, ready made feeds and these patties. These are kind of half formulated I guess. Some people mix there own pollen sub with soy flour and brewers yeast. I wouldn't fancy getting that wrong.
Its certainly way cheaper and not difficult to mix up. The bees do very well on it, but my aim to get them strong enough in autumn so it's not required.

Black Mountain Honey that’s my thought on it. I’m not a fan of mixing sugar syrup for the bees but mixing pollen patty with a proper formula is using the proper stuff but you add the water and sugar as I guess it’s a dehydrated version of it. I definitely don’t fancy cooking up my own recipe either!!
