It’s definitely a helpful feature to have. Someone else pointed out that with a v90 card you can also set uncropped 10 bit 4:2:2 60fps 1080p on your video mode as well. Which honestly makes way more sense since I never slow things down to 20% speed

i want to shoot 120FPS without S and Q Mode! having to come home then to speed up all the footage because not everything requires S and Q is just a pain! i cant believe it records normal 120FPS in 8 bit and only S and Q slow Mo in 10 bit.

I have a very niche case scenario, but I have figured out on davinci resolve it let's me slow down footage even if shot at 50fps to 120fps so I have found a work around
If you shoot slog3 below 800 (the recommended native iso on this camera for this profile) your camera will digitally clip highlights for you earlier (losing you a lot of dynamic range), also your camera won’t register zebras to tell you where highlights are being lost.

So glad to hear it! It’s funny, I actually never really use it. The crop on 4K60 can be slightly annoying, but I never really have any issues with it. And I NEVER slow anything down past 120 fps. I think I’d do 1080p 60fps 10-bit 4:2:2 on regular video mode instead if I’m being honest. It’s full frame, and I never need 20% speed that 120fps brings.
@@calincharles I would like to take a picture of myself holding a camera on a selfie stick. So that my face does not fill the entire frame, I move the camera away during the countdown and then I lose focus. Do you have any ideas for taking a sharp picture? Regards
Does S&Q mode work with an external recorder like a Ninja V? I am not having success making this work. Seems like with external recorder we're stuck with 120 8-bit. Anybody know a workaround?
@@calincharles Nevermind I did a test with these settings and I didn’t have to do anything in Final Cut Pro. I set my A7IV to the settings in the video and enjoy this feature. Thank you for the response!
If it’s connected to the camera no. If you were you use a fully external source or a item like the rode go ii with internal recording turned on, then you’re good
I definitely understand that struggle. V90 or better memory cards are expensive. I really suggest waiting for Black Friday, Boxing Day, summer sales, etc… and you’ll often find really good sales on higher rate memory cards. Will save you quite a bit. That’s what I did

I'm not sure if I remember right, but I think Gerald Undone mentioned in a video that when you shoot in 4K 60fps with the 1.5x crop, you still get more resolution instead of shooting in 1080p 60fps uncropped, partly because of the downsampled 4K from 7K
If I'm being totally honest, not having 4K slow motion can be a bummer with the A7IV. Specifically, when trying to crop to vertical formats after the fact. You are forced to SHOOT vertically in the first place. 1080p cropped to a vertical phone format looks like s***, even on a phone screen. That's the #1 situation I have that really is an issue with it.
I feel that. Whenever I shoot vertical I never crop as I feel like you never get as intentionally of shot content unless you do. It feels like an afterthought to me when people crop in. But I get that some projects you need to do that
@@calincharles It's been a struggle with business wanting website content as well as social media content. And exactly, you either have to 1. shoot twice and turn the camera or 2. sacrifice some aspect of composition, either you're shooting wide always with anticipation of cropping later, or you shoot "normally" and pray that you have enough room to show everything you need to without it looking janky. Most businesses and clients don't really understand why it's big decision to make before shooting.
Haha we work with what we’ve got 🤷🏻♂️ And for any video for social (which seems most client or personal work is shared on these days) 1080p is what is best otherwise you get the app adjusting your 4k footage to make it work on the app which makes it look awful.
98% of the total video consumed in the internet are for smartphones with 6” screen’s 🤣 1080P for some shots for social media clients it’s superb, nobody tell the difference 👌😊
I mean to be fair, all the full-frame cameras that shoot 120 fps 4K are like $5000.00. The R5 is like $4700, the FX3 is like $4999, the Nikon Z9 is like $7000. The cheapest fullframe option is the A7SIII, but even that is like $4300. This is a $3100.00 camera. can't expect a $3000 to compete with a $5000 camera. (All prices are in Canadian dollars)
YOU forgot to mention that you also need to have as fast V90 card in order to record in a higher frame rate
