  • Thunderclap Newman was an English rock band that Pete Townshend of the Who and Kit Lambert formed in 1969 in a bid to showcase the talents of John "Speedy" Keen, Jimmy McCulloch, and Andy "Thunderclap" Newman.
Their single, "Something in the Air", a 1969 UK number one hit, remains in demand for television commercials, film soundtracks and compilations. The band released a critically acclaimed rock album, Hollywood Dream, and three other singles (which appeared on the album), "Accidents", "The Reason" and "Wild Country".
From 1969 until 1971, the nucleus of the band consisted of the songwriter John "Speedy" Keen (vocals, drums, guitar), Andy "Thunderclap" Newman (piano) and Jimmy McCulloch (guitar). Pete Townshend (using the alias "Bijou Drains") played bass guitar on their album and singles, all of which he had recorded and produced at the IBC Studio and his Twickenham home studio. The band augmented its personnel during its tours: in 1969 with James "Jim" Pitman-Avery (bass guitar) and Jack McCulloch (drums); and in 1971 with Ronnie Peel (bass guitar) and Roger Felice (drums). The band folded in April 1971 but was resurrected by Andy Newman with a new group in 2010.
The most current Thunderclap Newman group was formed in February 2010 at the instigation of music business manager Ian Grant. The lineup of the band was Andy Newman, Mark Brzezicki, Nick Johnson, Josh Townshend and Tony Stubbings. They recorded and released an album in 2010 titled Beyond Hollywood.

Can you imagine a musical gathering of this size going on in this day and age? Every time you hear of a gathering of youth today there will be stabbings, shootings and outright mayhem going on. I don't remember a single gang related situation going on at Woodstock and according to Wikipedia, there were over 460,000 who attended that weekend! We were about "Peace and Love" but today's generation seems to be about self centeredness and taking advantage of others......and to think that these same kids VOTE!! PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY!!!

Yes, Clamchucker - it was some world then . . . filled with HOPE that human beings could learn to live together in Freedom, Brotherhood & PEACE (corny as it sounds, it would be soooo nice to get back to those goals, would it not?) Our children, now grown, carry the message. Wishing you, and yours, Health, Joy & PEACE.

+Clamchucker and Martha Mack Yes we did have quite the world didn't we! The world seemed to be getting the idea back then didn't it? We celebrated our brothers and sisters that were different. Who cared how you dressed, wore your hair, or anything else for that matter, we had a cause. We wanted to end a war, give everyone a helping hand to a better life, end discrimination and hate. I for one still believe that and invite everyone to join up again, it still isn't to late. I believe it's too late when you stop breathing and your life force is gone. Peace to you and yours brothers and sisters.

opinions vary. Just like a lot of people hate the "jug" being played with the 13th Floor Elevators,i think it was their signature and was kickass, just like the broken, staggered piano fit in on this song for me,to each his own.
