    I remember the first time I tried to watch Uncut Gems I was trying to relax after work. The amount of stress you feel even within the first 10 minutes was enough for me to stop the movie and watch it at a completely different time. Definitely one of the most amazing proofs of editing as a story telling device.

    This video reminds be of a break down done for Chernobyl. It talked about how a subjective perspective makes the first episode anxiety inducing, And as the characters learned more context of their situation, the perspective got more objective. Brilliant shooting and editing

    I think a great example of this used with the opposite pacing is in Parasite, when they are going back home in the rain. They really show everything and it gives it this sense of dread.

    I always like to bring up how this film completely omits the Sunday after Passover Saturday. Howard takes the trash out on saturday after dinner, and then it cuts to Monday. No one notices this and some are even convinced we see Sunday...but nope, they move past it.

    I'm rarely unforconble, going through rough childhood myself, but Uncut Gems (similarly to Requiem for a Dream) is a movie that i struggle to watch and had to restart 3 times. I'm 41. As an artist and motion designer - this video nails why "Uncut Gems" made me think so uneasy - the editing. I felt like watching a documentary at times. Like a raw thriller version of "The Office" style filming.

    F for Fake is a brilliant master class in editing as it conveys a plethora of info and opinions and analyses like one would in a college essay but it’s all visual and Orson plays with the documentary mockumentary satire genre with such ease. He uses to great effect.

    Nice look at something that doesn't get enough attention when it comes to editing and storytelling in general, IMHO.
    "Show don't, don't tell," is the standard, but "feel" rarely gets the recognition it deserves.
    Also, appreciated the concise length! It's almost like you're an editor... ;-)

    I may be missing the point here so I'm looking for some enlightenment / education to widen my perspective.
    I feel like the elements you've alluded to in this scene, relate to the cinematography (lighting, framing, camerawork, blocking) as well as the script, not the editing. How does editing link in to HOW the story has been told here?
    Uncut Gems is brilliant

    • @ErwannKerroch84
      @ErwannKerroch84 2 роки тому +3

      Basically, things have been cut out from what was originally supposed to happen in the scene, to emphasize the hectic feeling, thus placing us in the character's shoes - someone who's always in a rush. As the video says, we feel how the character must feel because the editor chose to "rush" the scene.

    This is more about writing than editing. The editor can work with what they are given. If you aren't given good thoughtful moments captured by the filmmaker then you cant take any of this advice and apply it.

    • @Danae_O
      @Danae_O 2 роки тому

      Though the Uncut Gems example is explicitly one where they had information in the script (that was therefore likely filmed) that the editor chose to cut out to prioritize that rushed feeling over exposition.
      Of course, what the editor can do is affected by what the writing and filming allow, but it's a bold editing choice nonetheless.

    Hello. Very interested. I have been selected as an editor on a 48 hour challenge. I and the team must make a movie in 48 hours. I cannot anticipate in advance what I will see, the number of takes I may have to deal with, or the story theme, which will be pulled out of a hat the day before the shoot. My initial thoughts were to use the DaVinci cut page exclusively through the initial cut, but your tutorial is giving me pause. Would there be a way to effectively use the selection process and the cut page to mutual advantage? Do you have any advice for me? The challenge begins June 25th.

    Actually they wanted to try some unique editing but in the end it's unwatchable, disturbing in both visually and audio mastering makes it hard to watch. If it's what they wanted to achieve that's ok but otherwise it's a fail. Eisenstein call it tonal and overtonal editing.

    Before I head out, I gotta say I stopped before the video was over because there’s just way too many ads. All unskippable. Ads at the front and all throughout EVEN WHEN THIS HAS INCLUDED ADVERTISING by you. Actually, just as your included advertisement portion started it cut away to a regular advertisement - the same ad I saw twice already in this same video. By that point my brain was yanked around too much for me to focus anymore on your video.
    And I’m so frustrated by that feeling I don’t even want to try and come back to this.
    Luckily I have a VPN on my phone/tablet that so far even with UA-cam’s updates, blocks 98% of ads) but I was watching this on a smartTV. I don’t even want to rewatch on my other devices - I’m just bitter about the experience. I love your channel and your content and I know you need support through ad revenue but my god… advertising is getting out of control. And I just can’t focus on what you’re saying anymore. Way too many interruptions.
    I don’t know if the amount of advertisements is something you can control, or what the advertisements are FOR (none of them had anything to do with film or editing). But if that’s something you can adjust, I would highly appreciate it.
    Anyway I just wanted to give that feedback and I’m sorry if this comment comes off as rude, I am writing it out while still bitter about this experience with all the interruptions.

    • @ThisGuyEdits
      @ThisGuyEdits  2 роки тому +3

      I hear you. I wish it would be different but the moment I turn off ads or reduce the ads You Tube will not share the video. The ad revenue we get as creators is not worth the trouble but, again turning them off kills the view velocity. I know that not everyone can afford YT premium but it makes for a much better experience as it turns off the ads. $10 a month or whatever the rate is may be worth your time you save sitting through 100’s of ads every month.
