A expressão "tudo bem" como forma de cumprimento utilizada em linguagem coloquial é uma importação da variante linguística brasileira da língua portuguesa. É mais tipicamente portuguesa a expressão - como vocês bem sublinham - "como está" ou "como estás" a que se responde, "bem, muito obrigado". Admito no entanto que o uso da fórmula "abrasileirada" tem ganho foros de cidade relativamente ao Português Europeu (PE) fruto da interculturalidade entre os dois países de expressão portuguesa.

Actually some accent varieties in Brazil pronounce thr s the same way and others mixing both sounds in the same word: estás (first s normal, second s shhh) so it depends on the region.

Thanks for the kind words and tip Johan! It’s true, the audio for this recording session was low and noisy and had to try to work it in post. In some of the videos we have that will follow in the weeks to come (in which Joel is no longer in the white shirt) the audio should be much improved. Thanks again!

Love your videos and approach. First learned about you on TAP flight. Curious about something that is becoming increasingly important to consider: where Obrigado/obrigada is concerned, what adjustment is being made for non-binary/trans folks?
Thanks for your kind words and glad you found us! Great question. As far I (Joel) understand, there is a movement (sadly, with limited traction so far) that offers a solution of ending these gendered nouns and adjectives with “e” instead of o/a, for example, “obrigade”. However, not many people are likely to be familiar with this language pattern. If one prefers to avoid gendering themselves, they can do so by making an effort to avoid adjectives (like obrigado) with gendered endings, or by using alternate expressions / sentence structures. For example, to say thanks, you can say “agradeço”, which is the first person of (agradecer, to thank). Gender neutral language is very difficult in Portuguese and requires some thought and practice. I’m afraid Romance languages like Portuguese really have a long way to go when it comes to having options for non-binary folk 😥
When talking about someone else in a gender neutral way, you can use the same approach as in English: using third person plural, (eles). Of course, it can create confusion if the listener isn’t already expecting you to use gender-neutral language.

Great question! Unfortunately there is no official standard, as Portuguese continues to be a gender-obsessed language. To our knowledge, the most established gender-neutral method to say thank you would be “Obrigade”. We’d love to see more development in this area, since the current binary nature of the language is showing it’s age more and more as time passes (Joel)
How to say 'And you?' in European Portuguese?
You can say, for example, "E tu?" (informal) or "E o senhor?"/"E a senhora?" (formal, for a man or a woman, respectively). "E você?" is another formal option, and gender neutral at that, but *some* people might think that using this pronoun directly is a bit too blunt - this is explained in more detail on the Practice Portuguese website :) - Joseph
Great content guys. I got one related question. I’ve heard the expression “ beleza” meaning “whats up” is that correct ? And I cant figure out the origin of this term . Thank you
Olá, Michael! "Beleza" for "What's up?" only applies to Brazilian Portuguese; the word is not used in European Portuguese in that sense. In Brazil, when you ask "Beleza?", you can think of it almost like asking "Is everything going beautifully?". Not sure if that's the actual origin, though. -- Joseph

1:20 Well, Brazilians don’t typically use the pronoun “tu,” so you really wouldn’t hear “estás”
Actually in some states like mine “Maranhão “ We use “TU” all the time. Maranhão is located in the northeast of Brasil . I think everybody in the norhest says TU". The people from Rio Grande do Sul also use “TU” as well .

Or you can simply say "Bem?". Maybe I'm not sure
You can absolutely just say "Bem" (or "Mal", or anything in between!), but it's very common, as an added touch of politeness, to add the "obrigado" or to ask back how the person is doing as well. - Joseph
