    Pantera is just this extremely strange oddity because they were absolutely musical virtuosos, masters of riff and groove and composition and most people never paid attention to them because Pantera was also a thrashy, punk-y garage metal act. But they groove and harmonize and shred in ways no other band could. And both the drummer (Vinnie Paul Abbot) and his brother the guitarist (Dimebag Darrel Abbot) were absolute perfection musically. Dimebag is regarded as one of the greatest metal and rock guitarists of all time despite his short life, and I don't think anyone in the metal or rock world would really even be interested in trying to argue that he wasn't. Eddie Van Halen even regarded him as one of the best.

    Pantera are by far the masters of groove metal. They pretty much started the genre. Dimebag is god on guitar.
    I'd say these guys are responsible for a LOT of what modern metal is. The grooves, the breakdowns, the slam riffs, all of it comes from Pantera.

    Awesome reaction to this! If you really want to hear how versatile Phil Anselmo's vocals are, you need to give "Cemetery Gates" a listen. You will be amazed how he goes from clean to harsh vocals, and back again. It's my all time favorite song by Pantera! I guarantee you will love the lyrics, and be blown away at the end of the song! RIP to brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. Peace! 🤘✌

    You are so right on the Iommi/Sabbath influence and sound, Pantera are also a one guitar band, so when Dimebag is soloing, that gives Rex on the bass scope to fill in the rhythm where normally you'd hear another guitar, just like Tony & Geezer !

    I was a fan of Pantera in the 80’s when Phil joined the band .. Power Metal was their first album with him and i loved it … Phil pretty much pioneered that growling style of vocals and as a long time metal guy I am unaware of anyone singing like this … Metallica maybe … but Phil took it some place else … and the Abbot brothers were just simply amazing and exceptional musicians.. RIP Dime .. formerly known as Diamond Darrell Lance

      @ziggymarlowe5654 Рік тому

      @@esoterica412 I hear frustration, anger, annoyance at critics who don't 'get it'. All artists have faced critics and sometimes that criticism is brutal and unfair. All art is subjective, so what a critic is saying is purely opinion. I can understand why an artist would like "five minutes out back" to 'discuss' the finer points". of the art (music in this case). So I think I understand where the singer is coming from, he is fed up constantly answering inane questions and dealing with haters. Eminem is famous for voicing his frustration with critics, Dee Snider testified before congress that heavy metal was not demonic and leading kids into devil worship. So what I appreciate in the lyrics is that the message is one I've heard before and agree with. Critics often get it wrong and know nothing about the music. I think the musicality is complex and can hear some parts I like, it's only the style of the lyric delivery that I find hard to relate to. Same reason I prefer Beethoven over Wagner.

    • @esoterica412
      @esoterica412 Рік тому +1

      @@ziggymarlowe5654 that’s a way to interpret it. Someone who doesn’t know the backstory to this can still get that vibe of brushing off the haters and telling them to back off. Funny enough, it’s called 5 minutes alone because Pantera were doing a show and one of the fans apparently were being disrespectful and Phil (the singer) going off on him, the crowd took it as “hey let’s beat this guy up for being a loud mouth” and so they did. The father of the fan got mad at Phil and the band and blaming them for doing that to his son. The Dad told the manager or publicist of Pantera saying he wanted “5 minutes alone with that guy” to which Phil and Pantera responded to him with this song, basically saying you want 5 minutes alone but i’ll bash your brains so to speak 😂… wild story.. there is actually a vid of Phil talking about the song the backstory it’s funny cause Phil loves boxing and is pretty big dude. 🤘🏽

    • @ziggymarlowe5654

      @@esoterica412 Yes, that is a wild story and I vaguely remember hearing about it and thinking, 'Good Luck Buddy, taking on Phil, tell us how it turns out for you." So I guess I knew in the back of my mind that the song was inspired by actual events. Which gives the song more weight in my book. And I admit, I do tend to give the song a broader meaning in the sense of "Careful what you ask for", lol. I know I've heard other Pantera music I liked, same with 'Five Finger Death Punch', 'Disturbed', 'Mettalica' 'RATM', etc.. I have an eclectic taste in music, finding value in all. To me it's an art form. And I think critics can be unfair in his/her assessment. I think we music lovers probably gravitate towards one genre or another, which is great. I can learn from you and Syed about music I might not seek out on my own. Peace my friend ☮
