Soft spoken, well elaborate, different camera angles, great explanation of what works for him and what does not...and I can keep on going! Great video my guy!
Great information, painting is an artistic trade. I'm working on some cabinets, and wondered about the trick to interior cabinet masking. You provided the answer.
Very informative and two camera angles made it very easy to see and understand. I want to see about staining and refinishing my existing oak kitchen cabinets with new stain and lacquer finish.
Your welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting. I do have plans for quite a few videos in the future. Gets tough when I am still on the job daily with a full family 🤷🏼♂️
I like the idea of using paper, to mask. I usually use plastic with good results. Just wanted to share with you, on the paper overlap, I use with white 3M tape to save a few bucks, you can do the same on the "re-tape", where tape on tape happens. Great video.
Thank you so much for watching,, and for your comment! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Totally understand and agree. But, saving on the material doesn't concern me, consistency and ease of recreating quality is important. So we keep it simple using 1 or 2 tape types, the client pays for the material I've estimated and everything flows.
I looks like you do things correctly. I’ve been painting for 7 yrs-only interiors houses. I work by myself. I’ve been wanting to start painting cabinets. Please show or send info on how to spray…for a first timer. As to the types of painting tips. Anything you provide would help. Thanks much. Larry
Hey Larry, thank you for your kind words and id love to help you out. This year I will be focusing on bringing more in depth UA-cam videos on all different aspects of finishing and painting so please subscribe so you don't miss them. In the mean time, you should check out my Instagram account, I have ALOT more quick how to cabinet painting videos there. Also you can DM me there and we can have an actual conversation and talk shop more freely
The 3m hand masker is for sure a much quicker way to get things protected. First few times it's irritating figuring the thing out, but after that there's no looking back
Your welcome. Good luck getting on site. I should be putting out alot more jobsite finish and prep content in the next few months. If your interested, my IG has more up to date and current content more often. @artists_touch_painting
Helpful. Thanks! I just built a vanity and was trying to mask it off with the 3M film and hating my life, but your method looks a lot easier. Going to try it!
To each his own. Paper is deffinately easier and faster for me. Doesn't flake of when spraying either. But both ways has their benefits for each person and situation.
Yes, 3M hand masker. Trimaco paper. Masking tape, frog tape all from sherwin williams or lowes. Good luck. Check out my other videos here on on IG/TikTok. DM if you need help along the way.
Good production on this video. There is no easy way to do this. It's a lot of work and a lot of time. I just had that bad experience with dried primer flying all over the place off of plastic when spraying my first coat. Never again. I'll be using paper. Thanks.
Yea, that issue of flaking really varies product to product. Specifically shellac. I know many people who use plastic and it works for them because the products they are using don't flake as easily. But for me, its not worth the risk. My employees use it sometimes though. 🤷🏼♂️ Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Nice video 👍 Especially after all the ones I’ve seen where they mask around the drawer guides. No way to make that look professional. I’ve painted for many years, but just getting into refinishing cabinets. This is the way to do it.
Yes, we've done it all.kinds of ways, full gut and mask is the best way to ensure consistent quality results. Thank you for watching and commenting. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Useful vid thanks. I'm just getting into spraying...i want to spray cabinets but is there any reason why you couldn't just roll those bits of trim... As they aren't going to be seen too much.. Unlike the doors..?
Yes, most of us are only using water based 2 component polyurethane. Check out Renner, ICA, Milesi, Envirolak and others. Please DM me on IG if you have more questions. Id love to help out
@@artists_touch_painting thanks. I'm in the UK... I've been recommend Renner. And Sayerlack. I've got my first kitchen to spray soon... If I have any questions I'll be sure to ask 👍
Another question if you don't mind... I have my 2nd job coming up. The cabinets are dark wood so I planned on using Zinsser Bin primer. I want to try the Renner topcoat. Is there any reason why this wouldn't be a good combination? Thanks
I take a really sharp brand new razor blade and cut the tape line against the lip, then peel the remainder off from the back side. But, some tapes and making sure not to over build those corners keeps that bridging from happening. But the razor is the safest sure bet to avoid any peeling.
It depends on the situation. We have a titan 440 multi finish (air assist or airless) an ed655 titan capspray turbine or conventional gravity fed gun. Coating, size of project is usually the deciding factor
@@artists_touch_painting I started painting before you were born going on 40 years of experience now. I have seen a lot of changes over the years in products, applications, equipment etc.. Many thanks for your humble teachings. You are the new kid on the block and a true mentor and role model to anyone who desires to perfect their painting skills. Respects, Sky
Most people price per piece, meaning how many doors and drawers. And price per piece. X amount for doors and x amount for drawers. Some price per linear foot or square foot. I personally get my base line price per piece depending on the door profile. Anywhere from $100-200 a piece, and this covers cost of the boxes on site. I compare that to my know cost of labor per week and what I think it will take to complete the project. DM me on Instagram if you'd like to dig deeper on some of this stuff.
How do you deal with dried paint bridging between paper and cabinet when you go to unmask? Do you simply slice through the paper and then remove the tape that’s left? Or is there a better way?
Sometimes it doesn't bridge too badly and can be pushed off after. But usually we cut with clean new razor and peel the backing. There is another way to mask the openings that eliminates that issue that I'll do a video on soon.
My kitchen cabinets have European hinges. Therefore no face plate lip for the tape to easily stick to. What is the taping method for that? The cupboard faces are the wood grain look as well as the ends but the insides are melamine. I am thinking of painting the whole cupboards white. The inside of the boxes are white also so leaving the face frame wood looking would be obviously wrong. Please help. Thanks.
With boxes that don't have a lip we do a clean tape line to the edge. Then we take tape and fold it in half to shape an L to build a lip for the paper to stick to. It's tedious but it works. I'll make a video on this next time I run into it
Absolutely not. I used to when I started and then I learned the hard way. 5 piece cabinets are made with the center panel to be able to float. Wood breaths and swells in multiple directions, so that caulk bridged gap WILL crack eventually, making the job look really bad.
@@artists_touch_painting what do you do and tell the customer if it doesn’t look good? In some spots you can still see the crack line, some areas the paint filled it. If it’s light colors you can see all that even on the same door.
I don't let it happen. Its called laddering and it means you painted to heavy, on an angle, or the paint took to long to dry. The off chance that it does happen to me, I try to scrape it out while its wet. If I miss it you can use a dental pick tool to try and scrape the paint out of the seam. You can caulk it if you want, but try to use as little caulk as possible, wipe it wet. And tell the client that it WILL crack later down the road when the wood breaths due to temp and humidity changes.
What in the world is the trick to getting those slides dismounted from the back of the cabinets? I have those same slides and cannot for my life get them released from the whit plastic mounts at the rear of the cabinet
@@artists_touch_painting thanks so much. Just a few minutes ago i tried one last time. I unscrewed the front, bent the track inwards and smacked the back of it and it popped out! No, this is 1 VERY VERY in depth multi possibility tutorial masking of a box. Each box on average takes 2 min or less. The video is not titled "how to mask off cabinet boxes fast" although it is fast. The video is not a short, its not a reel, it's not a tip to, its a detailed teaching of how to do it. With all the possibilities, with discussion of all the problems. Go into it blind the first time and it will take you 10 min per box because you don't have a clue. Your welcome for the foresight and free teaching. Keep comming back 🙏🏻
Never. Unless its open shelving, or glass doors, the interiors do not get done. Takes twice as long, twice as much paint, twice as difficult to get it all cleaned and sanded, adds twice as many pieces including shelves, and I charge twice as much. Juat to be behind closed doors. Not worth the time, effort or expense.
Ummm, then you would um, be a rich um man. 🤷🏼♂️Curious as to how well you would do presenting information authentically while consciously thinking about not saying certain things so as to not offend viewers. If I could only say Um less to increase the value of the free knowledge I’m giving you then you would like me better 🥹
Either way is fine. Fold it and you use more tape. Fold it inside and stick it removes waste, saves blades, and saves tape, BUT it takes more time and effort as well as lends itself to problems sealing the sheet down flat on the perimiter.

The reason is that the proper coatings that you SHOULD be using for cabinet and wood refinishing, such as 2k poly, HAVE to be sprayed.
