Laura i am 65 yrs old and while i have played in the dirt all my life and loved it i have learned so much from you. You have given me knowledge, desire, courage and not to mention inspiration. Barb, 63 here and I so related to your comment. Watching them is uplifting and has given me a huge “to do list” of things to try when I retire. I already got my Master Gardener’s certification and began improving all my gardens. I can’t wait to see what she teaches and inspires us to do next! Best of all, moving around will keep us young!

Such a beautiful harvest and you have given me ideas for next year. I’m a 75 year old grandmother and gardening is my passion. I’ve learned so much from you just buy watching your videos, especially be using the Espoma products-best I’ve ever tried. Wish I could find the land and sea compost. Do you know where it is sold?

Hi Barb, Stephanie. I related to both of your comments. I’m 66 and have had the most wonderful year in my garden. Laura has been such a wealth of knowledge and constant inspiration to me in my gardens. I’m adding a cut flower garden bed to my area for next year! Happy gardening!

Loved the editing and music! Appreciate the effort put in with the slow motion, distance shots, & drone footage. Many YT videos only show zoomed-in shots with absolutely no perspective shots. You guys put out a polished professional product that is honestly what you would see in a television series funded by a large corporate media group. Much respect to you Aaron & Laura for putting together this channel.

Yes watermelon harvest with Laura, Aaron and my coffee! How fun to watch your face when you tasted them and the excitement of seeing what you grew in that ground. I think your advice is spot on you just have to get out there and try it because I agree gardening is best learned by doing! Your community of people that you give things to are going to be so blessed with all the fruit and veg coming on and the chickens will be in heaven!

Laura, I got so tickled when you go straight to the heart of the watermelon to taste, all I could hear in my memories were my grandmother saying, “ Becky, don’t eat just the heart.” To this day I will always eat a few bites of just the heart while cutting one up. Congratulations! 🍉😋

It’s amazing how that piece of land has changed, so beautiful. I am probably the odd one, I cut my watermelon and leave half in the sink with a spoon, never to be refrigerated, I eat from the heart of it and throw it out when the best part is gone! Learned a lot from your experience I never knew your supposed to cut the water from a watermelon. Thank you for sharing your life’s journey with us, would love to see Benjamin eating watermelon and Aaron too!!

Congrats Laura on your first watermelon harvest! We've been growing watermelon in Colorado for some time now. Have consistently found that the female watermelons are sweeter than the male. You can tell the difference between the two because the females are round, and the males are elongated. So, in addition to checking for the cream color where the watermelon has been sitting in the bed, check for it's rounded shape. This is a good rule of thumb when selecting watermelons in the grocery store too! Love your channel! Happy gardening everybunny!

Wyleen Black : Wyleen, please stay safe and wear a mask when you go outside to water. That fire ash is such a “fine” particulate. I am 2.5 hours north of you and am growing my first garden in years. Laura, Aaron and Benjamin have been the best during this trying year!

From the time I was born until I retired disabled, we grew huge gardens. I loved just about all vegetables. My husband and I raised 6 children, 3 huge gardens around our farm and thousands of chickens over the years. My favorites times were slicing into the first cucumber, the smell and taste the best. Next, cutting into first watermelon. I mean, dance party feeling. It’s hard work but a wonderful life. Bless you.

I don't have a lot of room for vine crops but hoping to try next summer. A couple of years ago I grew a Crimson Sweet watermelon for the first time. We planted it in a pile of old potting soil I had dumped in my flowerbed after redoing all of my containers. I measured it against my foot everyday. The vine grew about 30 ft. in length. Amazing to see how it grew. I waited for the tendril to turn color before I picked it. Finally the day came. We had planned a "watermelon feed" for family when it was ready. OMG! 32#s! Thank goodness for family and friends because Dave and I couldn't have eaten it alone. what a good reason for a get together. It was sooo good! I put a video of the garden that included my watermelon plant on Facebook and it might still be there. Congratulations on your watermelons Laura and Aaron!

    • @ElderandOakFarm
      @ElderandOakFarm 4 роки тому +6

That's what I'm going to teach people, or hope to anyways, with my channel- if you don't have the "perfect" soil, you don't have to wait to grow things! You can still grow things and get a harvest! I know people that went years without growing food or flowers because they were told, or saw videos, or read, that you need to have this kind of soil, or that kind of soil, or add tons of compost, etc. in order to succeed. While it's true, the more you ammend your soil the better in most cases, (except those few things that thrive in poor soil) you can still grow things now!

You have a lot of watermelon there! What you don't give to the chickens, may I suggest my Mom's delicious and refreshing gazpacho recipe? You really don't notice the watermelon in it, it gives this cold soup a certain something.
    Watermelon Gazpacho
4 heaping cups cubed seedless watermelon
1 English cucumber, diced, reserve half
3 medium tomatoes, diced, reserve half
1 small red bell pepper, diced, reserve half
⅓ cup chopped green onions, diced, reserve half
    1 garlic clove
    small handful basil
3 to 4 tablespoons red wine vinegar
3 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for drizzling
1 to 2 teaspoons sea salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper to taste
    ½ jalapeño pepper, optional
    diced avocado, optional
    1. Set aside the reserved half of the chopped cucumber, tomatoes, red pepper and green onions and place the remaining half in a blender (Mom uses a food mill - she doesn’t like the skins and seeds from the tomatoes and skins from the pepper. She uses the blender for the rest of the recipe). Add the watermelon, garlic, basil, vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper and jalapeno pepper, if using. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust seasonings.
    2. Pour into a large bowl and stir in the reserved chopped vegetables.
    3. Chill for 3 to 4 hours or overnight.
    4. Drizzle with olive oil and garnish with diced avocado and/or micro greens, if desired, before serving.

You have the best attitude towards trying new things! And what a harvest you’ll have! Now that I think about the desert soil that a lot of our crops are grown in in California I’m not surprised anymore by your success with growing on the new land anymore. Hot and dry but consistent root watering seem to be what many crops love!

When you have a watermelon that doesn’t taste quite perfect or is overripe...juice it! So fast and watermelon juice is delicious! You can add lime for a little punch. You can leave the seeds in too.

Just another way to tell if a watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew etc is ripe... look for bee stings! Sounds weird, but the bees know which one are the sweetest!! The more stings you see, the sweeter!!
Enjoy your crops!! Absolutely wonderful and beautiful to watch your channel!! Thank you :)

My journey this summer was much like yours, planting in non ammended soil that had nothing but sand and weeds for years. I planted watermelon and for the first time in 40 years, i got ripe and sweet melons!!! So far I've only harvested sugar babies......delicious taste.
A neighbor gave me seeds for striped melons. One is over a foot long. I've been watching the tendrils, but will have to try some of the other methods you taught . Thank you for the education- I have learned so much from you already in the 10 months I've started watching you. I too tell all my gardening friends about you. I love watching you and learning.

you should be happy!!! my word! look at those!! i'm so happy for you, too.. that space was nothing but gopher holes and you've turned it into a paradise in less than 3 months! you rock, woman! i bet Benjamin loved those watermelons, too :) how fun!! and i agree, experience is by far one of the best teachers in the garden... enjoy the 'fruits of your labor'! question: can you save those seeds to plant next year? or do you order a fresh package of seeds? :)

Laura, you are SO inspirational. Seriously, the best! I have 2 small raised beds and have a hard time dedicating space to vining crops, but this makes me want to grow sugar babies so much!
Never stop showing us your successes (and failures) because you make us all want to get out and do more in our gardens! So much so that now when my husband sees me planting in the garden, he asks which GardenAnswer video I watched to get me out there. 🤪 I live in zone 9a with 100%humidity...so it takes a lot to get me out there during the summer months!
Love all you do. Thank you!!!

I’ve worked in produce many many years, since I was a kid. Cannot tell you how many watermelons I’ve cut and dug and picked up out of those bins! (So heavy). One thing I always did was tap on the melon to see if it was ripe. I know the exact sound, so funny. Customers used to ask me to pick them out for them and wonder what I was trying to listen to! The overripe melon was so horrible to cut. I would have to make slices and have to put them on a tray and over wrap them and they would all crack. I can still smell the ones that were bad and all slime would come out when it was cut😩. Sugar babies are good! Did you ever try yellow watermelon? They could be real sweet as well but I never found them to be my favorite.
