I an thinking that if you were to set it up with a MPC live you could set it up to play chords and change the keys (transpose). I'd lie to see a video on that potential set up. I'm not a keyboard player but I think I'll get this for the studio.
Sadly you no longer get the Pianoteq modelled piano, you get their own Piano V, which just isn't as good. But being an in-house product means Arturia aren't having to stump up the cost of a Pianoteq licence.
Hi, Joe. I'm really liking your videos. I'm hoping that you can advise what would be a good entry/mid level midi keyboard. So far from what I gathered Novation Launchkey and Nektar Impact LX seem to have good reviews. If you can give any insights to these or recommend other keyboards it would be greatly appreciated. Take care.
I haven't used either of those but know they are widely used, Novation is usually pretty good but I've not had any experience with Nextar personally. They seem cool though.
Looking at this an debating whether to get it or the komplete kontrol. I use studio one to produce. Are you still using this board? If so, are you still happy with it? If not, what did you upgrade/change to?
I prefer the feel of the Komplte Kontrol over this one personally, plus NKS makes it a bit more useful as you can also use all of the Arturia stuff with it directly.
Glad i can play practice classical piano but Can i play it through bluetooth earphones or any earphones or connect via computer never had a midi ? Great video btw 👍🏼
Sorry to raise a question after all this time but is the action adjustable so it's fairly light though still similar to an acoustic piano? I heard folks say these keys are stiff?
+teeblack06 I haven't used the NI 88 but in general I'd prefer the NI keyboard since I mainly use it with Maschine. As a general midi controller depending on what you need you may want this though as it's more flexible as a general MIDI device imo.
Thanks for a detailed and practical review! I noticed you're a Windows user. Can you share any challenges or tips for getting the Keylab 88 to consistently sync with the software? I have very hit-or-miss results even using different PCs. The keyboard will light up, screen displays controller info and will allow for changes but MIDI Control Panel doesn't detect the keyboard. Much worse, it won't send MIDI to my soft synths. I'm running Windows 10 with current drivers and a desktop i5. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks for watching. I no longer have this unit so I can't test it but when I did I wasn't running into any issues as far as sync with the plugin, standalone was a little buggy but when I used it in a daw it was fine.
Nice and use full video :) and could you clear my doubt ? Is it difficult to play wind instruments voices and lead voices in hammer action keyboard ? I'm planning to get hammer actioned keyboard but I've to play lead on that.
Thanks for watching! To answer your question, it really depends on you. For me, I don't find playing flutes very fun on this keyboard as it's a bit heavy for my taste for that. But if you're fingers are stronger or you're used to weighted keys you may be fine.
I had an oberheim mc2000 back in the day and is like to purchase a new 88 key controller with more or less the same specs... What I had on the oberheim was a numeric pad which I used to select the different patches immediately... Say I'm playing patch 5 and have to change to patch 116 immediately after ... How can you do that without the numeric pad? Thanks in advance
Whats Jo man I was wondering with this keyboard would i have the same direct control in other V Collection instruments as I can see it does in Analog Lab 3 ? please get back to me brotha Thanx and blessings
I'm looking at buying an 88 key as an upgrade from the tired M-Audio 49 I've being using for the past 6 years. Could you help me out, I'm trying to find which Midi 88 Key Controllers the best overall in terms of feel and functionality and I'm drowning in all of it a little lol. Everyone has different things to say, could you suggest any you personally thought were great?
Anyone who is in the market for a full MIDI controller needs to determine if they really need fully-weighted, or semi-weighted. There is this assumption that fully-weighted "hammer action" is the pinnacle. But to me, that's only if you come from a true piano background. Fully weighted keyboards tend to be heavier also, as well as more expensive.
Good video! I was looking for a weighted midi controller to go with my motif xf7, the keyboard looks good. But it little bit to pricey for a midi controller.
+Shereal McNeal Thanks for watching man! Yeah, these 88 key controllers can get pricey especially when using higher end keybeds. Really depends on what you're looking for.
I actually forgot about that one! I haven't been paying attention as I'm not much of an 88 key controller guy lol. I do not currently have any plans to review this one but we'll see.
+dilliot2k Been a while since I touched either but this thing feels great. I prefer it over the Roland FA08 I had, which seemed a tad bit heavier than this.
Its subjective, but as a classically and jazz trained pianist, it took me all but about 5 minutes to box mine up and send it back to Sweetwater soley because of the action (no stores around here stock these). Also if your a player that likes to solo in the syles of Chik Corea or Jan Hammer the placement of the pitch and mod wheels is ridiculous (and Arturia is not alone in this) If your more into needing a controller to trigger samples and do light chordal phrases the Arturia 88 might be a fine choice and it did look kind of cool with the white casing and faux wood sides. If your an actual pianist though looking to control a DAW studio probably a Kawaii VPN1 or Roland RD used as a controller would make a better choice imho.
+Chris Strobel Yeah, I don't really like super heavy action, this one is still heavy, lighter than the Roland I had, but still heavy. Now that I have the NI S88, I definitely prefer the feel of it over this one personally. I totally agree that it's subjective/personal and really depends on how you play. I also agree with the mod/pitch wheel placement, I've never been a fan of them up above the keybed.
That NI S88 sure is catching on here in Los Angeles, a lot of big scoring guys are adopting it as their main board. How is it using those pitch and mod strips when your hands are a little sticky from perspiration, can you still do smooth bends with it? Also can those lights above the keys be turned off if one chooses?
Can't say that I'm every playing it in a situation where my hands are sticky so I can't really answer that one. In the Komplete software you can disable the light guide, they are automatically off when you're just using it as a general midi controller.
hello, great video. Can I ask you how to change the MIDI channel on Keylab 88 while I play? Without using MIDI Control Center, but directly on the keyboard? Thank you Signed up
Hey, I've just come across a review of yours from 2009. You don't age; in fact you look younger now than in 2009! Are you a real person? It would be really neat if they were to launch the chord pads feature for the beatsteps.Do you recon this would be good with drum and bass/jungle production? i love the vast synths highly used in Drum n bass
Ahahahaha, thanks! I'm real hahaha. A chord mode on Beatstep would be pretty cool. They just released a new version of the Keystep you may want to check out also.
how are the pads? sensitive? could they pick up all the notes playing say, a funk beat with expressive velocities, ghosting snare notes, trills and flams etc? my mpk88 pads are lame and don't pick up gentle taps.
+adamandlorraine not a fan of the pads, but really not a fan of pads on any keyboard controller. The pads on the akai advance are pretty cool but still I prefer dedicated pads.
My favorite 88 keyboard so far has been the Native Instruments S88, really dig the feel of it, it is a bit lighter than the Arturia so depends on your playing style. I'm not a piano guy though, the NI one is between piano and synth in my opinion, I dig it.
The top last octave on my Keylab 88 does not work properly. I did the stupidity to buy this frigging MIDI controller because it has "hammer action Keys" and the guitar center associate told me to go for it... I also did look at your video before I got it and went for it but has been a terrible experience for me and a waste of money too. They didn't have it on display. I ordered via the store (blind faith - 2018, I trusted the guy) If I would have tried it at the store, I would have gone for the Yamaha MOX88 that was right there staring at me :( I tried it in my studio for the first time.. did all the firmware updates (last one from 2016 haha) WOW. Well it turns out that the keys feel like those old FATAR - Studiologic super heavy keys... and The top octave does not work... The forum is loaded with complaints and not a single line from Arturia. Aaah and the stupid pads are ridiculous. They have terrible response. $799 for a Brick Lemon. When I took it out of the box for the first time. The keys on the lower octave would get stuck. Took it back, but now the other one I got after 5 or 8 month I noticed the top octave doing some stupid stuff like not triggering anything unless you press very hard and I get stuck midi data. I do not recommend it at all. This company is terrible. Unrealistic heavy keys and bad manufacturing. This is a $499 controller with a Software bundle which are not free. They are part of the total price. $799 The lesson? (which I should have known better) Is to never trust sales reps nor videos unless you can get your hands on the actual instrument and test it. I Hope I'm still under warranty. I register all my gear.
I definitely suggest trying everything yourself if you can, I ended up getting rid of mine once I tried the Native Instruments 88 key, I agree this one is a bit on the heavy side. Some people prefer that but I like a bit of a lighter action (I'm not a piano player so I'm more used to synths and keyboards) I didn't have any issues in terms of the keys breaking or not responding when I had it, (only in home use, no traveling or anything) but I know many who have (with this and other keylab models). Hopefully they still honor their warranty and take care of your issues.
the wood ends are fake as in mdf with veneer? I guess i'll have to check that out and see if I can get some real wood ends made - kind of sucks if that is the case.
Is it easy to assign drums to pads using logic Pro X. Ive been thinking about getting the Arturia Keylab 61 or the Akai mpk2 61 but still need to know if the drum pads on Arturia will trigger drums from Battery 4.
All of their MIDI controllers come with software, Analog Lab is one of the included, it should have been a serial in the box, but you may have to register the keyboard first before it shows up.
+Olimpus H There's a button in live at the top that says MIDI that let's you go into MIDI mode, you may want to check the Ableton manual for instructions on how to map midi controllers.

very good man I was looking for a video to explaine some obout how this Keyboard works and the effects and sound and you guiving me an idea ans some orientation thanks.
+SoundsAndGear.com yeah I don't get it it's fine in stand alone mode and my iMac is new and has 64 gigs of ram it's a nice feeling Fatar build but the software is sluggish and crashy I'm both my daws
they keylab88 use weigthed keys? cause the specs says "88 note hammer-action Fatar keybed with velocity and aftertouch." Soooo hammer action its not the same stuff as weighted keys.... soo this piano comes with REAL weighted keys yes o r no?
garbage, no, but as with anything depends on what you're looking for. I prefer the feel of the NI Komplete 88 key over this, but I'm not a piano player either.
You look uncomfortable with that thick midi controller. Let's do not tolerate those thick controllers so that the ugly music industry might try to change.
It would be really neat if they were to launch the chord pads feature for the beatsteps.
+aljowen That would be cool indeed!
Thank you brother!
I appreciate that you explain and demonstrate. Half of the videos on UA-cam just word vomit explanations. Thanks for giving the full spectrum

Thanks for watching, the current version has some piano sounds too.

+Maine Sheffield it is a custom desk from azstudioworkstations.com, really cool company and very affordable.
Can you layer sounds on it so when you press a note it plays four different instruments or at least a couple different instruments
That would be up to the software you're using it with.
if i like the weighted keyboard, should i buy this one now? is there a huge difference between this and the 88mkii? (except the price:) )

would this midi work with the Logic DAW
Yeah, should work fine.
hello bro, one question, are the keylab 88 keys to produce hip hop good?play synths, percussion etc... or is the akai advance 61 better?
They are kind of heavy on the 88 imo, synth action like the smaller ones or the akai, etc would probably be better.
Could you create your own sounds??
You can use it with any plugins you wish so you can create the sounds you want.
can this be used with other DAWS? like fruity loops, ableton live, reason , etc?
The keyboard works with any software, the plugin will work in any daw that can load plugins.
Do you still have this and use this? Can you speak on the quality of it longterm ?
I no longer have this unit, found the keys a bit heavy after a while once I tried the NI 88 key, prefer that one.

+Olimpus H you may want to contact Arturia support to see if they have any ideas.
will this work with Native instruments?
Yeah it will work with anything that can take MIDI input.
how do u hook up an arturia mini lab on a macbook
+jimmybagz1ify Plug the usb in and make sure the drivers/software is installed.
do you know what proram i actually need to record
+jimmybagz1ify you can use it in any program, garageband, logic, ableton, etc.
is there a way you can call my cel phone 9145621600
+jimmybagz1ify No I'm not going to do that. You can contact me through my website if you want to discuss booking a personal consultation.
hi there thank you for the vid.
can i transpose notes if i wanted to use it for a live gig?
+Hector “TINY” Rios Yeah there's an octave shift button to change the notes.
Has anyone tried this with MainStage? Also, UVI has the Ravenscroft 271 patch. Can I integrate the Ravenscroft with this keyboard?
Haven't tried with mainstage, but you can use it with any plugins if that's what you mean
How long before the keys start to stick? Cant cope with that. Please let me know. I year. 2 years? more?
I have no idea, didn't have that issue with mine, but I also ended up switching to the NI 88 key once it released.
does it have portamento feature?
Don't remember, I think that would depend on the software you're using it with though.
Another solid review, by the way, I'm ordering one now.
+GJR Plato Thanks a lot!
I think i,m going to get this
Thanks for watching
Arturia give as Pianoteq (6) again pleeeeeeeease...😭
Hahaha, I hear ya!
would it work with logic pro x? and mainStage 3?
Should work with any software as a generic MIDI controller.
very good man I was looking for a video to explaine some obout how this Keyboard works and the effects and sound and you guiving me an idea ans some orientation thanks.
Glad to help!
I could be wrong, but I think they use real wood now at least some kind of veneer
Hmmmmm lol, I'd be interested to know hahaha.
they do
thanks, to be honest I've always been happy programming beats via a synth action keyboard. haven't yet been converted to pads.
+adamandlorraine Cool, nothing wrong with that either!
Anyone know which desk he has?
It is a custom desk from azstudioworkstations.com, really nice desk.
Crash city with ptotools 11 and ableton 9 otherwise great controller
+Mark Ferrizzi Really? I use it with Ableton with no issues.
+SoundsAndGear.com yeah I don't get it it's fine in stand alone mode and my iMac is new and has 64 gigs of ram it's a nice feeling Fatar build but the software is sluggish and crashy I'm both my daws
god bless& good review brother.
Thanks for watching.
Which one would you rather buy? The Arturia KeyLab 88 or The Akai MPK88?
I haven't tried the mpk so I can't say for sure
they keylab88 use weigthed keys? cause the specs says "88 note hammer-action Fatar keybed with velocity and aftertouch." Soooo hammer action its not the same stuff as weighted keys.... soo this piano comes with REAL weighted keys yes o r no?
+serchmarc it comes with what they say, I don't know the difference you speak of but they are weighted keys to me.
is it really a piece of garbage... lot of bad reviews
garbage, no, but as with anything depends on what you're looking for. I prefer the feel of the NI Komplete 88 key over this, but I'm not a piano player either.
I bet the new 999 one is made cheaper
possibly, haven't checked it out
I remember when this keyboard was first announced. Then it took forever to release so I lost interest.
+Johnny Parker It definitely felt like it took forever man! lol
+1 on the fake wood. Should be real wood as advertised on their website.
+adamandlorraine totally agree!
I'm sure some dude can provide you with real WOOD
You look uncomfortable with that thick midi controller. Let's do not tolerate those thick controllers so that the ugly music industry might try to change.
Uncomfortable? Not at all. Thanks for watching.
Which one would you rather buy? The Arturia KeyLab 88 or Roland A-88?
Haven't tried the Roland but the KeyLab ended up being a bit too heavy for my tastes, preferred the feel of the NI S88 over it.
