There have even been references made by historians to a great depopulation of Central Java. The last of the great Javanese temples is Sambisari dated 966AD. After Sambisari there are no major Hindu-Buddhist temples--but Merapi's great eruption was in 1006AD, so that eruption clearly was not the cause of the end of Java's classical civilization. .

Example : some of the worst damage to Ancient Egyptian reliefs in Egypt, seem to have occured during the Christian Greco Roman era. Bamiyan lasted centuries under Muslim rule until one political sect destroyed it. There are certainly examples such as the Mughal eradication of many Hindu temples in India, but on the whole the application of eradicating such thiings hasn't really unfolded to the extent one would expect. Various things may explain that such as the lack of machinery and explosives until quite late in history to even cause a dent to colossal stone structures, or maybe few Muslims are as fanatic about this as their founding prophet waa in the Ka'aba in Mecca.
